Supanova Femtrooper alert!

Sunday June 22nd 2008 – Sydney

JD woke up Sunday morning in full Starfleet mode, that is to say his inner geek was “giddy as a schoolboy”…it was time for SupaNova 2008. This is Australia’s largest Sci-Fi, Comic Book, Anime, Video Gaming convention. It’s an expo of TV, Film, Animation and Graphic storytelling with beloved guests and tons of added extras.

As Johnny, Mrs Doe and Mr Cave bounced into the dome of Sydney’s Olympic Park waves of endorphins instantly flooded the system. The main arena was converted into pop culture Nirvana. A prop perfect Bobba Fett menacingly passed by, an authentic fully operational R2 unit beeps and leggy women recreating their favourite Anime characters waltz by, all this 10 feet in!

There were stalls aplenty (Eg: Madman, Siren, Kings Comics, Gifts for Geeks) offering Collectibles, DVD’s, Comics and a treasure trove of rarities more valuable than answering the riddle of the Sands. Cruising up and down the fantastical alleys of commerce surrounded by a crowd of simpatico outcasts, fellow tourists to reality sharing an unspoken kinship it was hard not to wish that the weird and wacky people were not expelled to asylums if they behaved in a similar way in public.

Supanova 2008 - a long shot perspective

Arriving at the JB Hi Fi Seminar room just in time for a midday Q & A with Nichelle Nicols who played Ahura on the original Star Trek series increased the surreal buzz. Exceptionally well practised in the art of storytelling to fandom, her benevolent presence was every bit as assured and stoic as her most famous role. It was a treat to hear the famous martin Luther King anecdote first hand.

Heading back into the cataclysm of delights the gang was ecstatic to see the impish Beauty Jewel Straite who plays Kaylee (Shiny) in Firefly and Serenity. Charming and again embodying the essence of her character in real life, during the Q & A she entertained with on set stories and tales mainly orbiting Stargate Atlantis and rightfully her Brown coat adventures.

The new generation of Battlestar Galactica was represented by the ebony siren Kandyse McLure and it is here that JD has to apologise for having no photos of either feminine wonder because of a misusing of flash and lens. Chatting to one of the vendours the exciting news that July 9th Battlestar Galactica's James Callis (Baltar) and Jamie Bamber (Apollo) will be in town. (Visit The Hub Productions for more info)

Naturally Mr Doe is also a comic book fanatic and having the pleasure of having Writer/ Illustrator Howard Chaykin impart his artistic wisdom and industry experiences enlightened. Working for DC comics and Marvel he was a smart, funny and informative host, his brutally honest approach made meeting him as memorable as any famous face. Watching him sketch his latest signature Wolverine

Our rag tag crew left the main docking bay as Earth’s sun set in the West, exhausted and elated from the day’s abundant rewards. Sharing the experience discussion turned to the events more populated US counterparts like San Diego Comic-Con and Dragon Con. Continuing to lace our thoughts long after, next year John Doe will be in the U.S and may be able to attend these mammoth Prince’s of this fantastical Universe.

Werner Herzog the Bad Detective

Werner herzog tries to get on top of Abel Ferrera

Initial news of Hollywood’s desire to remake Abel Ferrera’s (King of New York, The Funeral) blunt instrument to the head Bad Lieutenant, left many of its passionate fans reaching for the nearest object of pain with the intent of disembowelling those responsible.

Then we all had to stand back a minute and assess the second part of the story. Nicholas Cage was onboard replacing Harvey Keitel in the lead role. As far from Michael Bay as you can imagine, the eccentric cinema tactician Werner Herzog was attached as Director……and he proudly stated he had no knowledge of filmmaker Abel Ferrera and had never seen the powerful original. Furthermore he refuses to watch it for fear of corrupting his own artistic vision.

An interview on defamer.com asked if he had had talked to Abel Ferrera about the remake and Werner’s response:
“I have no idea who Abel Ferrara is. But let him fight the windmills, like Don Quixote.” – Werner Herzog

Then Defamer askes:
You did a remake before with Nosferatu, but —
“It was not so much a remake as a homage to Murnau. But I don't feel like doing a homage to Abel Ferrara because I don't know what he did — I've never seen a film by him. I have no idea who he is. Is he Italian? Is he French? Who is he?”

New York Director Abel Ferrera voiced his complaints about his work being remade and vowed to fight it even before the feisty Herzog was attached, now a war of words is escalating.

Known for his tenacious language and intellectual determination, Herzog is a European personality, happiest when attempting the impossible. His steadfast stance against his ideas being corrupted in the viewing is totally in line with his refusal to fall inline because of someone else’s perceived notions of reality. Even a real life sniper’s bullet failed to extinguish his passion.

Fluttering between documentaries (Grizzly Man) and feature films (Aguirre Wrath of God, Fitzgarladdo) his artistry often renders the unbelievable as a tangible truth. Obsessed with examining disconnection from society and humanity, he looks for characters that operate outside of the status quo and quest for deeply personal redemption and fulfilment in fact or fiction.

Attracted to Bad Lieutenant through its screenplay he plans to reimagine the story of this corrupt cops frenzy of redemption with a more distinct leaning towards the obvious noir elements. The online furore currently raging serves as free press that may well promote the film onto the lips of more than just the art house crowd.

As a massive fan of both Directors and the source John Doe is undecided about the merits of a remake. The only thing that is certain is this reincarnation will be another unique entry into the annals of film history by a Director who is every bit an original.

“First things fuckin’ last”, apologies for the lack of posts over the last week, John Doe’s computer decided to blow up. That’s not a figure of speech by the way. Sparks flew out its ass, smoke rose above the shell and a foul smell decorated the air of his lair.

Though this post is almost redundant due to the Sydney Film Festival being half over JD still feels like sharing the rest of the events scheduled for the festival that serve as a siren song for this cinemaniac. Oh, to have the spare time and money to see them all!

Without further delay, here are the runners up for the 2008 SFF:
