Give Em Hell Malone - John Doe's Trailer of the Moment
December 3rd 2009 23:01
Frantic Paced Comic Book Noir
“Suck my Sinatra”, you don’t need to cruise to far on this site to find John Doe’s affection for the classic noir genre and its subversive offspring. The trailer for Give em Hell Malone offers a full check list of staples with distinct camera set ups, femme fatales, tough guy dialogue and twists a plenty.
The film is the latest from Russell Mulcahy, the Aussie Director of Highlander and ahem, Razorback. Teaming up with the square jawed Thomas Jane (Stander, Boogie Nights, The Mist) and Marsellius Wallis himself Ving Rhames (Out of Sight), the film looks like a hard edged, tongue in cheek ride.
The synopsis from imdb.com says:
“A tough as nails private investigator (Malone) squares off with gangsters and their thugs to protect a valuable secret. Malone goes through hell to protect the information but he dishes some hell as well.”
Coming armed with double barreled comedy the retro Cool tunes, hard boiled narration and smoking gun atmosphere make it look like an extension of excessive Shoot Em Up/Smokin Aces black wit. Characters come with names like Boulder (Ving Rhames), Matchstick (Doug Hutchinson), Buchtooth (William Abadie) and Frankie The Crooner (French Stewart).
John Doe ranks Tom Jane very highly ever since seeing him opposite Mickey Rourke in 1998’s Thursday. By the time he appeared in the under seen gem Stander he has been one to watch. Sometimes the best thing about a bad film (Punisher I look at you) Jane looks totally in his element here as Bogey style P.I Malone.
The unofficial Red band trailer is set to the thumping of George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone and opens with an hilariously staged torso being flung from a window.
The full trailer bleeds a clenched teeth, ice smooth vibe as Jane burns rubber in his hot rod 1952 Chop Top Buick Straight 8 that’s primer black with red rims and white wall tires. How did I forget to mention the delectably Spanish Elsa Pataky who reveals herself as an obvious sexual temptation.
Premiering in 2009 at Cannes and then the San Diego comic con, Give Em Hell Malone still hasn’t picked up a distributor. Hopefully misunderstood instead of a dog, the question is when do we get to see the finished product for ourselves?
