The Bullets, Brawls and Breasts of Bitch Slap

Harking back to the days of Russ Meyer, Roger Corman and other sexploitation era pioneers comes a modern day self aware salute. Inspired by cult classics like Faster Pussycat Kill Kill and Dragstrip Girls, the official Bitch Slap website begins its synopsis: “Bitch Slap is a post modern, thinking man’s throwback to the “B” Movie/exploitation films of the 1950’s-70’s as well as a loving, sly parody of the same.”

John Doe didn’t need to read any further than that to know this was his favourite flavour of trash cinema. This flesh for fantasy story is about a trio of full chested, double barrelled vixens on a mission to extort cash from a drug lord. The whole thing goes pear shaped when deranged villains, violent crooks and twisted morality enter the equation.

Structured for a plot collision in the vengeful finale, there is a second story told in reverse character flashbacks, Memento style. Bitch Slap is written and Directed by Rick Jacobson and Eric Gruendemann. (Click HERE to see a video interview with Jacobson and Gruendemann)

Providing the hard bodied, moist torsos in front of the camera are Erin Cummins playing Hel the corporate brains behind the crime. Julia Voth as the erotic temptress Trixie and America Olivo is the ass kicking, drug runner Camero.

Searching through their names on imdb.com these girls credits extend to beautiful woman #1 on How I Met Your Mother. Speaking of B grade, Hercules Kevin Sorbo and Xena Lucy Lawless also show up, though JD has never been a fan of either show.

The trailer certainly shows signs of Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill and though no dialogue is revealed, if you go to the official site you will find a few words of wise female empowerment.

Rated PG - DD For Pervasive Naughtiness. With a Parental Advisory on Guns Jugs and True Love, this is a man bashing girl power treat that this boy is lining up to ogle.

“Unlike most action stars I can speak…what’s the word? English!” Bruce Campbell

Everyone’s favourite lantern jawed cult hero Bruce Campbell is famous for his part as Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy and for cameos in a multitude of other Sam Raimi’s films since. His legacy extends to summoning the spirit of the king, brilliant as retirement village Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep and numerous other horror curios like Maniac Cop.

Now the big man himself stars in and Directs the horror comedy My Name is Bruce. The cock sure B grade legend plays himself. Buying into his own image when a small town in Oregon is invaded by “the chinese god of war, protector of the dead” he thinks he is the only man capable of smighting the beast, he is wrong!
“You need someone who can take on a heinous monster and stop it in its tracks…That would be me.”Bruce Campbell

The new trailer (below) for the film had JD trying to conjure a “she-bitch”, “just to give it some sugar”. So crack out the “boom stick” and get ready to chug some bourbon, molest some women and whip some evil oriental butt.

On a side note if you are even remotely a fan of Bruce, check out his autobiography titled If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Grade Movie Actor, it’s a frank and hilarious behind the scenes struggle of sub-existence within the film industry.

Frank Miller becomes a Celluloid Artist.

John Doe has always been a fan of Frank Miller’s (Hardboiled, Ronin) edgy graphic novels. His comics raised the bar on what was possible from the medium reinventing Batman for the new era.

In the last few years his Hollywood stocks have raised with the successful adaptations of his work like 300, Sin City and Batman: The Dark Knight. Violent, stylish and vicious his universes are polluted with tough talking pulp characters that thrive in the vile underbelly of society.

Comic Legend Frank Miller basks in digital film success

Working with Director Robert Rodriguez on Sin City, Frank learnt the art of cinema and Rodriguez’s loyalty and appreciation to his contribution saw him receive a co-director credit. (A decision which resulted in Rodriguez’s expulsion from the DGA)

The monumental box-office of Zack Snyder’s 300 cemented confidence that there is a demand to see his work in moving pictures and now Mr Miller is finally going it alone as Writer/Director of Will Eisner’s 1940’s penned The Spirit.

Dark and brooding, reading like an adult’s only version of the classic comic book The Shadow, this inspirational original is a near perfect property for the cult hero to catapult himself into the arena of cinema artist.

This week we finally get to see the first teaser trailer for the film and it looks promising. To the accompaniment of Ennio Moriccone’s theme from Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables this clip follows our noir hero as he traverses the city scape.

Adopting a similar visual atmosphere to Sin City, the monochrome imagery is punctuated by striking use of colour, in this case a bright red tie. Revealing little other than the tone, it is still very exciting to watch with no spoilers involved.

Miller has managed to assemble an impressive cast to bring his vision to life with Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie King, Paz Vega, Eva Mendes all supporting Gabriel Macht who plays the title role.

Scheduled for release in early 2009 you can rest assured that John Doe will be attending the cold blooded premiere with eager glee.

Note – JD purposefully has not included a synopsis for The Spirit comic so that those unfamiliar with it will remain untainted for this cinema event.
