March 30th 2007 01:30
Coming Soon- Australian DVD Releases for April
As usual this is not a complete list of releases, just some of the films, documentaries and TV shows that interest JD.
April 4th
Casino Royale
James Bond is back to the stone cold killer we know he is. Read John Doe’s review and see the trailer by clicking HERE
Appleseed
Classic Anime recently remade expertly with the latest computer wizardry. This 80’s animated action sci-fi still stands out as one of the best early manga’s.
Beyond The Sea
Kevin Spacey sings and dances as Bobby Darin proving in a biopic of the often neglected star.
A Praire Home Companion
Robert Altman’s final film is a fitting ode to loss and death, reflecting on a life lived and an era that is long gone.
Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law S1
Hilarious Cartoon Network, Adult Swim program that takes classic animated characters and puts them in absurd situations.
Below you can see the first 6 minute of the crazy pilot episode
April 11
Captain Blood-
For JD this is still the greatest swashbuckling Pirate adventure of them all. Death defying stunts and dazzling swordplay with Errol Flynn in one of his most famous parts. Part of the Errol Flynn Signature Collection includes Captain Blood, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Dodge City and Sea Hawk.
Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (2 Disc SE)
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor cut loose in this controversial and bold drama ripe with sexual and amoral content. Directed by Mike Leigh, it’s a groundbreaking classic that confronted audiences at the time and still surprises with passionate performances.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (2 Disc SE)
Stunning and dramatic this atmospheric, gothic thriller starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Directed by Robert Alderich this serves as prequel to JD’s other favourite Bette Davis film Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.
Here’s a great little trailer from back in the day.
April 12
Al Queda
Haven’t seen this documentary but the extensive running time makes me think this could be an objective look at an extremist religion, offering insight rr maybe its just hate mongering propaganda.
Ren and Stimpy S3
The lunatic antics of a schizophrenic Chuaha with rage issues and a manic depressive cat still feel cutting edge and leave JD rolling on the floor.
Hawaii Five-0 S1
“Book em Danno” - The famous line forever associated with this cool Cop show was actually never uttered, still a fantastic postcard from another time with a slick style.
Mission Impossible S2
The second season arrives of this top notch thriller series from the 60’s. Smart and taut every episode holds classic moments.
Twin Peaks S2-Part 1 & 2
Finally we get the the continuation of David Lynch’s (Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Eraserhead) mystery saga, ambiguous and eccentric, this cinematic TV show is a one of a kind essential.
Here’s the moody intro to Season 2
April 15
Black Dalhia
Not De Palma’s (Dressed To Kill, Scarface, Untouchables, Blow Out) finest but there are still enough florishs and noir drenched atmosphere to warrant a look.
All The Kings Men
A stellar cast including Sean Penn (Falcon and The Snowman) star in a remake of the scathing political exploration of power that corrupts absolutely.
Coming Soon- In Cinemas April 2007
April 5th
300
Read Johnny’s review and see the R rated trailer HERE for this flesh, blood and bone splattering ancient epic.
April 19th
Zodiac
David Fincher’s (Se7en, Fight Club) latest promises an immersive newsroom mystery thriller about the notorious serial killer who was never caught. Click HERE to see the trailer and read an interview with the Director. Stars Jake Gylenhaal, Mark Ruffallo and Robert Downey Jnr.
April 25
Number 23
Jim Carrey has deep psychological issues as he reads a book that convinces him he may be a homicidal serial killer. I’m a reluctant fan of Carrey in Eternal Sunshine and Man on The Moon, so this may be good.
Watch the tasty trailer.
Tideland
Director Terry Gilliam’s (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fisher King) dark and challenging fairytale may not be for everyone, but I’m a huge fan of the Director and Jeff Bridges plus the trailer looks enthralling.

I have been waiting for Twin Peaks season 2 forever...its been about 2 years since Season 1 was out...
So glad your a fan of Steve McGarett and the Five 0 team, I hope the DVD is in 5.1 for the music and opening credits. Jack lord with those sunnies is gunna look great if the picture transfer is up to spec.
Im not sure what FF means, but the chair, towel, flick combo is always gunna hurt. Im looking forward to seing the parkour foot chase again.

Totally hot.

Oh no, I hadnt heard the horrible rumour of a Hawaii Five-0 remake, they will probaly turn it into a Will ferrel, Ben Stiller vehicle for comedy because its much easier than doing a smart script that respects the show..
If I were casting it then Thomas Jane would my first choice.

As for Thomas Jane I was think more of him in the underseen true story Stander about a south African police captain who is appalled at massacring the native polulation so to distract the force from further brutality he decides to rob banks in his lunch break..

Wow. You're right. I can see Jane as McGarrett.
JD...if you're not already, you should be a casting agent!! (as well)

If I had the time out from writing, casting would be fun but because I would never put the Tom Cruise, Tom hanks, Julia Roberst of the world in a film makes me think I would fail...

Im looking forward to the extra features on Casino Royale which include-
Becoming Bond: An intimate look at how Daniel Craig stepped into the role of the 6th James Bond.
James Bond: For Real: Inside look at action and stunts of film
Bond Girls Are Forever: Closer Look at Bond's Leading Ladies
Ren and Stimpy never get old, and Twin Peaks S2 is long overdue...
I love the original version of All The Kings Men and havent had the courage to face the remake yet...but the cast sound great and the DVD release is an ideal time for me to check it out.

I think there were a lot of false starts for Fincher over the last few years he was attached to a lot of films that fell through.
Hope it is worth the wait.
