John Doe: 9 Movies that Piss me off - Parodies Included

9 Movies that Piss me Off And Why
Disclaimer: Time to alienate some readers, just remember that art is subjective and this is just one man’s opinion after all…and who the hell really listens to him anyway?
Obviously John Doe couldn’t list all the films that bug him in one blog. You see, JD is an opinionated little turd who turns his nose up at anything he doesn’t deem worthy.
Attempting to be brief, I won’t be wasting my time ripping apart the lastest offering from the Olsen twins or the Rock because I am well aware I’m not in the target demographic. No. These are all films that I thought I would enjoy at the time of release and ended up leaving me frothing at the mouth with dissatisfaction like Cujo after he bit that rabbit
Sometimes it’s miscasting, frequently its scattered direction, sporadically it is the grating dialogue and predictable plot that a three toed sloth with A.D.D could write.
Often it comes down to the fact that the film condescends to the audience, treating them like they were said sloths on typewriters.
Films that don’t follow up on their promises, decide to take the easy way out for fear of offending the status quo.
So here it is, 9 Movies in no particular order that annoy me, with a quick reason why. (Note- there are no remakes because that is a whole other rant)
Forrest Gump:
Representing the modern-day dream of rewarding laziness, this is the story of a one dimensional, empty vessel who learns nothing and doesn’t appreciate anything that happens in his life. Insulting to the handicapped everywhere, read the book instead which shows that Forrest also has faults and unlike Tom Hanks has the ability to not always be likeable, just like a real life human being... see Hal Ashby’s Being There instead
Forrest Gump, a horror film.
Gump Fiction- A Mad TV favourite moment of JD’s
When Harry Met Sally:
A film that says no woman can be a complete without a man by her side. That love defines us, and is more important than personality or a sense of self and stalking does not exist in big screen romance. (Ok I admit it, this is just a general pet peeve on 90% of romantic comedies)….see Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything instead
When Harry Met Sally- A Stalkers Fairytale
Saving Private Ryan:
Strategically retarded, as a chess player it is insulting to the intelligence that 12 pawns would be sacrificed to save another pawn, especially when it’s Matt Damon. Sure it is a nice daydream but in a film that prides itself on realism the plot is about as believable as Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbour…..see Sam Fuller’s The Big Red One instead
Saving Private Lion
The Matrix:
Dark City for morons, replacing intelligence with pillaged Hong Kong action scenes and recycled anime set design. Spelling everything out, a thought provoking finale is abandoned in favour of Keanu Reeves flying of into the sunset for a happy Hollywood ending, nice CG though….see Alex Proyas’ Dark City instead
South Park Matrix
Tomorrow Never Dies:
The James Bond series was already knee deep in quicksand when Remington Steele took over and by the time he turned up in an invisible car with a family friendly attitude I prayed he would earn a-license-to-kill-himself…see From Russia With Love
Pirates of The Caribbean:
A film so bad it makes Cutthroat Island look like a buried treasure. A big fan of swashbuckling adventures, Johnny Depp is this films only saving grace. Delivering dull swordplay, a cut and paste plot that has no regard for what happened two minutes earlier and a cast that all appeared like they would rather be somewhere else…see Errol Flynn in Captain Blood instead
Silence of the Lambs
Director Jonathon Demme goes to great efforts to create a pseudo-documentary feel. Building tension, controlled, authentic performances are the order of the day until…Anthony Hopkins arrives and undermines it all with a looney tunes inspired comic book cut out character that provides zero menace and makes you laugh when you should be recoiling in horror…see Michael Mann’s Manhunter instead
Silence of The Lambs- A romance for the ages
Butterfly Effect
Donnie Darko for mass consumption, like the Matrix this takes an intelligent original and dumbs it down for 10 year olds to understand. Only difference is instead of wire fu we get Ashton Kutcher, the horror, the horror…see Donnie Darko instead.
Crash
If every book that ever featured on Oprah Winfrey's book club was given to a mad scientist and materialized in celluloid form, it would be Crash. Brilliantly acted, the complexities of predjudice are abandoned, instead having no relevance to the real world, this politically correct, homogenised and sanatised work should have been a Hallmark channel movie of the week…see Henry Bean’s The Believer instead
So what films pissed you off because you were expecting more?
Coming soon: Actors that piss John Doe off because they ruin films that have potential

I bet it could have been longer.
Gump Fiction was hilarious!
I liked the first Matrix, just for the atmosphere and the retro look. Dark City was chillier, though.
I'm surprised you didn't like Hopkins in Silence, though. I think most people got a kick out of him.
For me, I was immensely disappointed with Last Tango in Paris... Brando was good, but seeing in now, instead of in the 70s, there's not much shock left.
Also, Memoirs of a Geisha? Get out of here... take Asian actresses and make them speak in English? Just a Hollywood producer trying to cash in on the Asian-cool going around these days...

This list doesnt even scrape the surface of films that bugged me...these are just a few I figured alot of people have seen and are put on a pedastool by some critics.
Gump fiction is a good laugh isnt it, Saving Private Lion makes me smile too.
Good call with Memoirs of a Geisha, nothing more annoying than cross casting for no reason. (On a positive at least they didnt cast someone like Julia Roberts in makeup for the lead.)
As for Brando in Last Tango in Paris, I still find his performance captivating because of how much of his inner demons are onscreen. I agree though that the subject matter is no where near as racy as it was upon release.

I hated hated hated Magnolia. I sat through that crap for hours because I figured it had to all be building to something........but no, what I got was raining toads!! The only good thing about that movie was Tom Cruise who proved he can act.
Sleepless in Seattle - dreary and irritating. Watch An Affair to Remember....much better.
Hmm, I feel much better having vented!

Though I liked Magnolia I can understand that its controlled pacing and ambiguity could rub others the wrong way. Tom Cruise spitting out the *C* bomb and acting much like I would imagine he is in real life was amusing, but doesnt redeem him in my eyes.
As for Sleepless in Seattle, simply one of the worst movies ever made, period. Love An Affair to Remember, good one.
feel free to get some more off your chest..

Movies I hate...
'Rebel' (80s Australian war-time set film starring Debra Byrne, Bryan Brown and Matt Dillon)
'Boondock Saints' (so shit)
'Van Helsing' and 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' (so poorly realised, such missed opportunities)

I don't hate any movie, figure...oh well, time and money wasted, me the wiser...but will have to agree with you re 'Pirates...' and no, Johnny Depp didn't redeem anything for me.
The pretty boy's prime and peak was '21 Jump Street' and 'Edward Scissorhands'.
BUT...I really, really and I mean really hated 'Revenge of The Sith'.
Hell...I positively loved 'Vanilla Sky' in comparison.
Well, actually...I did.
The only Meg Ryan moment worth liking was in 'Top Gun'. Shot to pieces after that....

I knew our tastes diverged abit, glad you appreciated the humour.
As for Saving Private Ryan being based on a true story. From what Ive heard the story goes, there was a guy called Ryan who had his other brothers killed and they did decide to bring him back. But all it took was a phone call and a mild squirmish to bring him home. Oh and I think he was the related to military brass in some way at the time, a generals son or something.
Its just bad military strategy to waste men to save a single men, in teh words of teh mighty spock "The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few" (Good battle scenes though)
Boondock Saints gave me a laugh, not a masterpiece but not half bad either. Admitedly the ending drove home a point that was far better served in the story all ready.
The rest I whole heartedly agree with, escpecially Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the only reason they werent on my list is that I avoided comic book adaptions.
Talk about wasted oppurtunities, I mean in LXG why spend 3/4's of a film telling me who Dr Jeckyll, The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray and Alan Quatermaine are, when they are the reason Im there in the first place.
Thats only the tip of the iceberg, but I will end by just nodding with you Luke and agreeing, both films oozed potential and it was wasted with bad direction, tepid writing and dodgy CG.
Always a pleasure dude

Worst film ever. A procession of lame improbabilities and unintentional comedy.
I thought Pirates of the Caribbean was huge fun. I loved it. The sequel, however, yes THAT was crap.

What a great title for a post. There's a few in there that I didn't like either:
The Matrix - too confusing and melodramatic. Keanu only speaks in a montone voice which is dull and makes me sleepy.
Pirates - Just couldn't get into it at all, nor did I see the point in trying.
Forrest Gump - If I hear that box of chocolates quote again, I'll scream.
I haven't seen Private Ryan and I'm not likely to, I know it's long and bloody.
But...I do like When Harry met Sally and Silence of the Lambs, I thought that was very well-made.
I thought Crash was too ambitious and like Babel, just didn't gel.
I also agree with KylieW about Magnolia, that film seemed to go on for days.....

Agree that Pirates is not a great Depp performance, just in a film so bad he was the only good thing. Totally dig on his early work Cry Baby, Ed Wood but have to commend last years The Libertine, which was a great return to form for Johnny.
I enjoyed Sith, but would never say it was a great film.
As for Vanilla Sky, I loved the original Open Your Eyes but hated this spell-it-all-out-remake...will probably turn up on my worst remakes list when I do it.
Good call with Meg and Top Gun, annoying actress or what.

I enjoyed the original Clive Cussler series and totally agree that the movie Sahara was abismal.
Hi Mr Bloggs,
Is that episode IV A New Hope you are talking about or Phantom Menace?
Hi Tracy,
Thanks for the response and feedback, seems Magnolia is one that bugged a few, certainly didnt live up to expectations for me....much prefered Boogie Nights and Hard Eight

Thought you would have a few that bug ya.
Dark City came out a few years before The Matrix and was my fave movie at the time so I saw it about 8 times.
I sat down to watch the Matrix expecting something new, but instead it turned out to just be a predictable, shallow rehash of all the themes and ideas that were explored in DC. Didnt help that they actually used the same set and camera angles as DC too. (You can click on the link in my post above to read my full review)
I was a big fan of the early, darker Connery Bonds (From Russia With Love) but what Roger Moore started by turning the series into a comic book, Pierce Brosnan finished.
Agree Elizabethtown was horrible and Brokeback had its moments but overall dissapointed. The Star Wars prequels werent up to the original trilogy and I can understand why they bugged you.
I am a shaw brothers fan and a bit of a sucker for Kill Bill 1 though I think #2 is a much better film.
As an athiest and a man who hated Braveheart I was very surprised by Passion of The Christ, I found it to be a quality story about one man refusing to surrender his beliefs ala Spartacus and loved the cinematography and execution. Again though it is very easy to see why some dont like it.
Please come back with more as you think of em buddy

Don't get me started though ...
Suffice to say I'll mention the one film that has become my pet hate, driven by the fact that supposedly so many people think its cool and hip and flashy. I think of it as puerile, juvenile, mind-numbing, irritating-as-all-Hell, and infuriating-as-all-Hell ... I'm talking about Luc Besson's crime of last century The Fifth Element.
But please, don't get me started ...

Im with you on hating 5th Element. Luc Besson was known for smart action films like Leon: The profesional and La femme Nikita, then he releases this mindless drivel.
Ever since he has never regained his credability
Blade Runner in colour is the only nice thing I can say about it.

Aah a cinematic venting post - how brilliant of you... ooh goodie a place to espouse opinions ...
I loved Chancey G. in Being There, gee I bet if he had met Gump he would have given his butt-ocks a good pruning! [loved the Gump Fiction short - thanks]...
and... at last... someone who agrees that the butterfly affect was the biggest load of '...I don't have a word for it - bad ' I have ever seen or wasted two hours on. Everyone, but everyone I have met in the real world loves it and Ashton Koochie-coo - *gag* give me *gag* a break, he was only remotely funny [as a complete dufus] in the 70's show... who's rehashed humour was only mildly entertaining the five times I saw it.
However, I disagree with you on the Matirx and whilst I don't think Keanu handsome (from a chicks point of view) I do love the quiet timbre of his voice. I guess I just like quietly spoken men. However, having said that I am going to go and hunt for Dark City, now that you have put the flea in my eye-ear, JohnD.
If you can pretend that you have never seen Errol Flynn, Pirates isn't half bad and I enjoyed it through the 'new eyes' of my children. I think it was Johnny's best comedy role and I thought he did it well. Otherwise dramatically he was better in Just in the Nick of Time, Blow and Secret Window - although the last was a big vague-out and I remember thinking it too had lots of lost potential and missed opportunities.
I never saw Silence of the Lambs because disturbed individuals like that, disturb me and I don't like being disturbed by TV. I see enough in the real world to keep me disturbed and am disturbed that people would rather get into the workings of such a disturbed mind than take a walk on part in the war against corruption and injustice... et. al.
I agree with you on Bond and after re-thinking and rewatching most of my collection [after someone asked which actor was the best Bond], I have to say I do agree it was Connory. I haven't seen Casino Royale yet, but am told it is pretty gritty. I think a gritty bond is better than a comedic one... although there was this one scene in ... [I just like Bond movies I think] *lol*
Yes Sahara. ...and The Three Kings, however, as far as B-grade goes, I loved the Librarian I and II.
Matt Damon is a weasel [and bad actor] and I wouldn't waste my money.
Now I loved the Passion of the Christ too, but thought that Gladiator was the biggest load of rubbish, truly, I switched it off half way [Same as the Last Samuri]. As a female I find useless violence, useless. A real turn off. The story has to be able to carry the violence in some plausable way for me to my way of thinking, Gladiator did not. Passion, did. [It was the same with the violence in Butterfly affect too to a large degree, stupid, uncalled for and un-carried]... Pulp Fiction? Brilliant.
Ha! we have just rewatched the entire Star Wars saga again with my 10 year old watching. Up to now she couldn't as I didn't think her old enough to grasp the concepts. Seeing it through her eyes and explaining all the stuff to her, was very interesting as it opened new doors for my own [original] understanding of certain aspects... quite enlightening, actually.
...re-watched Spiderman again last night [again for my young one] and thought God, this is a silly film! I can't wait to see what they cooked up for No 3? personally, I think Batman Begins was the best prequal made in the superheroes genre, what do you think?
I've really enjoyed thinking about the films I hate and this post this morning JD and I look forward to the worst actors [maybe even actresses] to come... keep 'em coming...
Very entertaining with my breakfast, [so much better than TV].

Always nice to meet another fan of hal Ashby's masterful Being There.
have to disagree about Three Kings, I consider it one of the best movies about modern warfare, loved it. (Along with Buffallo Soldiers and JarHead)...find it hard to see the link with the unwatchable Sahara.
Librarian I & II frighten me, Mummy was a bad enough Indy rip off, I will take your word for it because I only lasted 10 minutes on the first one.
Im am a self confessed Star Wars geek so no need to tell you how much I enjoy them. I am well aware though they are far from perfect.
Gladiator, though not complete crap diappointed me too..Spiderman, same story
Batman Begins was mighty fine, though I still think Mask Of The Phantasm is the best bat feature.....Superman The Movie, The Crow, Sin City all spring to mind as quality superhero adaptions for me...the worst (LXG, Daredevil, Elecktra etc)
Worst actor/actresses will come in a couple of weeks, thank you so much for your support
Hi again Postmodern,
It is the cinematography and some of Jake's moments I referred too....still wont argue it fell flat and Heath ledger has to be one of the dullest actors to ever appear on screen.

Have to agree with you on most of these. The Matrix has always pissed me off, and I didn't even bother to see the sequels. I preferred V for Vendetta . I quite enjoyed Dark City (probably the best thing Proyas has done. Don't get me started on Garage Days. Yech!)
The Butterfly Effect was shit but had a good moral at the end. Sorry to spoil it for everyone but the moral is this: THE WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE IF ASHTON KUTCHER NEVER EXISTED.
I enjoyed Pirates as a big dumb adventure. Do you know that the producers were unhappy with Depp's performance, unsure whether he was supposed to be acting gay or drunk or both, and thought he was ruining the movie?
I like Silence of the Lambs, but all the cannibals I speak to agree that Hopkins was way too cocky and confident as Hannibal (and what a cheesy name for a cannibal).
One movie that pissed me off was Gangs of New York. For some reason I enjoyed it on the big screen (I think I was pretty drunk). But when I watched it again I found it to be insulting Hollywood drivel. Daniel Day Lewis still made an awesome villain though.

I was actually a big Wachowski brothers fan after I saw their debut Bound which is a delicious noir comedy and IMO still their best effort to date. V for Vendetta bored me with its 1984, Farenheit 451 retread plot and unimaginative staging. Good comic book though.
I agree that Dark City is Proyas' best , the Crow is a close second. (Garage days and I Robot suck the big one.)
Good call with The Butterfly Effect moral.
Says so much that the Pirates produces doubted Depps Sparrow, uninventive fools.
I find too that all the cannibals I speak to are a lot more unhinged than Lector and no where near as well read. Actually I just watch a hell of a lot of docos and read alot about sociopaths and pyschotics and none remotely resemble Mr Farva Beans. It as if he did zero research into the role or even read the original books.
gangs of new York, you and me both....Daniel Day and some nifty camera work are its only saving graces....Cameron Diaz is so out of her element in this too.
Feel free to share a few more peeves Hellvis...

I'll tell ya a movie that pisses me off: Almost Famous. Kate Hudson is supposed to be a groupie with a heart of gold, but for some reason I found her utterly unendearing.
I like the start of the film, and loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs, but this just makes my hurt over this film even more acute. This movie, based on the real life story of Cameron Crowe's days as a music journalist in the seventies, is overly sentimental, and nowhere near as interesting and tragic as that of Bangs himself.
Also the band Stillwater sucked nard, and HARD.
This movie ruined the possibilty of their being a film adapation of Jim DeRogatis's excellent Lester Bangs biography Let It Blurt, with Hoffman in the lead. For that it should die a slow, painful death.

The only time I've not actively hated Tom Hanks with a virulent and citric acid laden hatred is Mazes and Monsters. He plays an English teacher that goes stark staring batshit after playing Dungeons and Dragons too much with Chris "Career....what career? Essentially it's like The Fisher King if Robin Williams had still been mainlining cocaine and Qaaludes for breakfast.

QUOTE ME NO QUOTES!
So I will attempt to be pithy and brief...and this is off the top of my head...
Ok...some exemptions due to pitiful fan-like adoration: Johnny D, sorry, he can do no wrong and I don't care what else is happening in his films, only get annoyed when he isn't on screen...(throb! throb! huff! huff!). I love Anthony Hopkins, ok so in "Lambs" he was a trifle cartoonesque, but a preferable performance to the following sequels, which were crap!
Horrophile hit it on the head when I read his utter contempt for The Fifth Element. I was soooo annoyed at having been conned into seeing this boring anticlimactic piece of sci fi DRIVEL!!! For me, 'bad' Sci Fi is only excusable if it is Jap Sci Fi from 50's and the 60's, or equivalent from USA, same era, which I love.
Gangs of New York...had so much promise, but felt like a stage show, not some reality you could delve into.
Forrest...saw it once, it depends on your mood, and I liked it at the time, but, I was recovering from a bout of depression! The unrealistic two dimensional quality to it was probably a temporary panacea to my woes!
HOWEVER, it played last night, I couldn't watch it, and scrambled to find the remote to rid myself of its presence. I found his 'retard' voice so soooo infuriating I wanted to bash the TV's 'face' in....with a box of chocolates....and California Chocolates personally for Hanks (it comes in a wooden box).
I have residual loathing for Hanks because of Philadelphia, where he plays a gay man dying of AIDS. Sorry, lost tooo many pals to that disease/syndrome and I HATE it when straight actors play gays and in EVERY interview, they HAVE to state they are NOT gay...just in case they gave a convincing performance....no worries there for him!
And if one wants to see a fantastic, realistic, non-condescending nor exploitative performance of a mentally retarded intellect, then watch DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, an Oscar winning performance in my humble opinion!
Ashton Kutcher should ONLY EVER appear in tawdry soft porn movies, or the full on variety, especially if it is gay!
Matrix....ONLY the first one is excusable! And my excuse for that is, I have worked with the guys who developed the SFX for the 360 slomo camera shots...ok...enough bragging now...
The Da Vinci Code I have left for last! Rarely do we see a book and a film BOTH being garbage! The book, admittedly, had far more merit than the film, yet, there were GLARING lapses in logic, suspense and plain old writing ability throughout its puerile pages!
The book was written by a guy who ended up freely admitting using the research work of others, without giving them credit, and to add insult to injury, after being dragged into court by the original researchers, he won and they lost! Go figure!?! I do not remember the point of law that the judge decided to use in order to make this decision, but, it opens up a whole new world for the plagiarist I would have thought!?! And I do not remember a film credit being given to them.
Back to the film Da Vinci Code:
This utterly contemptible drivel was foisted upon our cinematic world with a generous budget. However, what is really annoying for me about Da Vinci Code, completely disregarding the appalling choice of lead (Hanks again!) and its complete dilution of suspension of disbelief, is the fact that there is a book, entitled In God's Name, a non-fiction research expose` of the alleged murder of Pope John Paul the First, which was supposed to be made into a film, but was shelved because of another real piece of tripe loosely based on the same area but completely fictitious, (can’t remember its title...it is rumoured to be a disinformation attempt) and then this ludicrous Da Vinci concoction comes along and puts a seal on any film company touching the Vatican as a subject for years to come!
I will do a review of that book, "In God's Name" on my site soon I think...read the book if you have not done so, you will be entertained, shocked and amazed!!
cheers and AVE! RANTUS EXODUS!!!...MEA CULPA!!!!

I will agree with the English Patient, nice to look at but empty.
BUT, I do have a soft spot for Fred Zinneman's A man For All Seasons, a love of Robert Shaw probably has something to do with it. Though the historical faults may be glaring the drama worked for me.

I hated all the Pierce Brosnan Bonds myself, he was the death nail of the franchise for me...I was a big fan of the Timothy Dalton ones though.
Saving Private Ryan was based on a true story in the loosest sense (Eg: There was a battle of Normandy etc). The brother in real life were the Niland's. 2 of the 4 died but in real life a phone call from a general was all it took to get the one home, he was transported to an airbase and flew out within a week. No rescue mission was needed and no sacrifice of human life resulted from it, which is totally acceptable. The one compliment I can give is that the opening 15 minutes is the best depictions of the Omaha beach landings ever put on film and subsequent battles were choreographed and shot well its just the plot that renders it unwatchable for me.
I actually watched Cutthroat island recently and though it had big faults, was no where near as flawed as POTC and I enjoyed it much more.....not worthy of being in the collection or anything crazy like that though, both are sub standard swashbucklers for sure.
I actually am a huge fan of Michael Mann's Manhunter (best of the Lecter films IMO) and thought Ridley Scott's Hanibal was easily the most enjoyable of the later Lecter chronicles. (Much more suited to Hopkins acting style) A clever and literary black comedy that was exquisitely staged and executed with a brilliant finale homage to contemporary horror cinema.
Thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts, always enjoy reading your opinions.

two films that gave ne the fuckin shits this year were Valkerie and slum Dog Million air
Valkerie was shit plain and simple and all the nazi spoke with british accents......you know what......it was just shit - there - you have my analisys
As for Slumdog, where do I start, its an arthouse film for people who only see mag ryan and tom hanks films - the fuckin half an hours worth of cut and paste who wants to be a million air was woeful, the second half was bullshit with a guy gets the money and gets the girl and it was all fucking destiny, lets go buy a lottery ticket shall we made me hurl and as for the dancing at the end - oh my god - you've never seen me run out a theatre so quickly

The basis for Valkryie of the plot to kill Hitler is so rich and intriguing it was hard to screw up..Cruise in a ridiculous eye patch over emoting rendered it unwatchable for me, seems he tainted Bryan Singer's judgment too.
Slumdog just looks so repulsively feel good and empty I haven't even approached it. Reality TV frightens me.
