One Night Stand(1992), Relentless (1991) and Revelations (1993)
Warning: Material contained in this post will hopefully offend some viewers.
Starring:Bill Hicks
"When two or more people agree on an issue, I form on the other side."- Bill Hicks
Comic legend Bill Hicks was on a mission to change the world through comedy. Entertaining his audience was only the bi-product of his witty and scathing observational humour.
Fucking with the status quo and fanning the fires of dissent his observational eye collided with conservative values like a hijacked plane ripping into the world trade centre.
Aggressive, passionate and verbose Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the young age of 33. At the time of his death he was just beginning to get the recognition he deserved in his homeland of America.
Worshipped by his fellow comedians, changing the world one laugh at a time he would launch into tirades aimed at the war in Iraq. Attacking the decline of free speech, waxing lyrical on the blindness of politics and religion and mugging the empty nature of Boy Band, business orientated entertainment.
Philisophical, socially conscious and violently opposed to hypocrisy, political correctness and American superiority he used his words as a weapon. Refusing to sell out, Hicks had no desire to have his own sitcom or do movies, in his own words…
”Folks, I could have done that, walked around being a millionaire and franchising myself but no, I had to have this weird thing about trying to illuminate the collective unconscious and help humanity. Fucking moron."-Bill Hicks
John Doe says:
Offending the masses, frustrated by the stupidity of people everywhere, Mr Hicks ranks right alongside George Carlin and Lenny Bruce as my favourite all time comedian
Armed with a daunting intellect, a savage wit and a completely fearless attitude, Hicks couldn’t care less if you liked him or not, as long as you listened.
"I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are”- Bill Hicks
Starting with One Night Stand recorded at the Old Vic theatre in Chicago we get to see his “Prince Of Darkness” style evolve over the three shows on this DVD.
The second is Relentless, his breakout performance from the Montreal Comedy Festival.
Far more popular in the UK than in the US it is appropriate that the third show on the disc is Revelations. Recorded at The Dominion Theatre in London just before his tragic passing, the transformation to rock n roll wordsmith was complete.
Rather than prattle on anymore about his genius and the massive corruption of my personality that has resulted from too much viewing, I will leave you with a few of my favourite quotes from the man.
On Procreation-“Childbirth is no more a miracle then eating food and a turd coming out of your ass”.
Pornography-“Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thoughts, that's their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thoughts. Hmm... Sounds like...every commercial on television, doesn't it?”
Christianity-“A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fucking cross? It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a rifle pendant.”
Advertising-“By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Thank you, thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourselves. Seriously though, if you are, do. No really, there's no rationalisation for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers, OK? Kill yourselves, seriously. You're the ruiner of all things good. Seriously, no, this is not a joke. "There's gonna be a joke coming..." There's no fucking joke coming, you are Satan's spawn, filling the world with bile and garbage, you are fucked and you are fucking us, kill yourselves, it's the only way to save your fucking soul. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show”
On Drugs-“If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, then go home and burn all your records, all your tapes, and all your CDs because every one of those artists who have made brilliant music and enhanced your lives? RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEAL fucking high on drugs. The Beatles were so fucking high they let Ringo sing a few songs”
Women-“I've learned a lot about women. I think I've learned exactly how the fall of man occured in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, and Adam said one day, "Wow, Eve, here we are, at one with nature, at one with God, we'll never age, we'll never die, and all our dreams come true the instant that we have them." And Eve said, "Yeah... it's just not enough is it?"
Now for your viewing pleasure here are a few choice clips from the shows.
Here is the first 9 minutes of the Relentless show.

That damn porn always comes back to bite you in the ass.....or anywhere else your fetishes may take you.
Glad to introduce another concerned citizen to the warped POV of Bill Hicks. I know you will find much amusement in his ramblings.
Are you a fan of George Carlin? If not I suggest his stuff as well. Dazzling with his knowledge opf the english language, establishing an intelligent rederick that is undeniably soaked in wisdom. Though sadly there is not a DVD available in Australia, in the US is a mighty box set with all Carlins work.
A few quotes:
"Electricity is really just organized lightning."- george Carlin
"I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it."-George Carlin
"I would never want to be a member of a group whose symbol was a guy nailed to two pieces of wood." - George carlin
I know you cant have see it right now Adrian, but below is a little taster of what George Carlin has to offer. I will undoubtedly be posting a blog on this great man as well sooner or later.

Great post JohnDoe. Have you ever seen Bill Hicks's home-movie Ninja Bachelor Party? Most people think it sucks. And it does, but I still have a soft spot for it

I can totally see that Homer and Hicks should be together. I found out that not many people here is Oz had heard the mans show so I thought I would draw attention to it....him and Mr George Carlin both are far more than just comedians...
Sadly a copy of Bachelor Ninja Party has never come my way but I would love to see it.
Are you a Carlin fan too?

I like what I've heard of Carlin, and he was Rufus in the Bill & Ted's movies. Even if he was only acting, this immediately qualifies him a s a personal hero.
I look forward to a Carlin post. It's been ages since I've heard any of his stuff, and I can't say I've seen any footage of his performances. Bring it on.
