“I was dreamin'. Dreamin' my dick was out and I was checkin' to see if that infected bump on the head of it had filled with pus again. If it had, I was gonna name it after my ex-wife Priscilla and bust it by jackin' off. Or I'd like to think that's what I'd do. Dreams let you think like that. Truth was, I hadn't had a hard-on in years.” - Elvis
Arguably the most iconic figure to ever walk the earth, more recognizable than Jesus Christ, the mythology of Elvis Aaron Presley transcended the mere mortal man long ago. He was a living legend, now we just have the legends.
Bubba Ho Tep is a Comedy/Horror that thrives in manipulating the image of the man while still giving us glimpses of the god we all secretly wished he was. The King (Bruce Campbell) is alive and he’s an old man. Living in an East Texas rest home, the fame and excess are long gone.
Reflecting on the life that he willingly traded long ago.He is beaten down and generally waiting to die,
until patients in the old aged facility start dropping dead like flies. Nothing out of the ordinary except that an ancient Egyptian Mummy is stealing their weakened souls.
This kicks our man in the ass and he decides that with some help from his buddy, a black JFK they will defeat the evil curse and save the souls of the other guests. Armed with his ego and a walking cane the battle is on for our geratric superhero, hail to the King Baby.
“In the movies, I always played the heroic types. But when the stage lights went out, it was time for drugs, and stupidity, and the coveting of women. Now it's time. Time to be a little of what I had always fantasized of bein' - a hero.” – Elvis
John Doe says:
Yep, its as kooky and weird as it sounds, its also hilariously funny and sincerely touching for this fan.
I am a sucker for the 21 year old, 1956 bad as shit, good ole boy Elvis Presley. Not the bloated and regurgitating himself on a Las Vegas stage depressing Elvis. This film redeems those sequin jump-suited later years and replaces it with a mature king that takes care of business.
“Don't make me use my stuff on ya, baby!”-Elvis
Based on the comic book of the same name and costing about a half a million to make the nuanced screenplay is knowledgeable and insightful, steeped in the memory of a fallen idol. You don’t have to worship the Big E to appreciate this films clever wit because of its self depreciating and irreverent style.
Its John Carpenter meets Sam Fuller, good tongue in cheek fun that will always hold a place in my heart. A odd ball genre mix that works because of the passionate cast & crew who have a fabulously camp concept to bring to life.
In amongst all the snappy dialogue and mighty B grade, low budget inventiveness I found myself getting surprisingly emotional at times, Its schlock entertainment with a heart and that heart is Bruce Campbell (Maniac Cop, Evil Dead II).
He plays the role with so much gusto, delivering his lines flawlessly, carrying himself with a crippled swagger and a curled lip that convinces you that it’s the original and not a copy of an icon.
Ossie Davis (Do The Right Thing) as Jack Kennedy is a hoot. Director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Beastmaster) revels in the trash horror setting and lifts the larger than life central character with music and cinematography to sell it all as an alternate truth.
It was recently announced that cast and crew are reuniting to do a prequel called Bubba Nosferatau. E battles a pack of She-Vampires down in the swamp lands of Loisiana, Paul Giammati is co starring.
The DVD:
Of course the picture and sound are top notch in this recently made movie but the extras are bountiful and as satisfying as southern fried chicken wings.
There is a all encompassing Directors commentary that gives you ladles full of info and anecdotes plus another in character commentary by The King himself.
The 4 making of featurettes cover all facets of the film and the deleted scenes are the kind you hope someday end up back in a Directors cut.

Film & TV on DVD
The extra features on the disc are loaded with interesting tidbits on the film.
One of my favourites:
Once Bruce Campbell read the script his only question was "Do you see his pecker?"

Film & TV on DVD
There are some films taht i just dont understand why they arent massive hits but I can totally understand some people wont dig on Bubba Ho Tep's groove.
It is definetly off centre and caters to a particular audience. Not for everyone and it also helps if you are a fan of the Big E.
The film drips with a surreal style giving the whole thing a dream like quality. Personally I lap up films of this type and it adds to my enjoyment when a film takes you away from reality.
Each to their own, one mans treasure is anothers trash.
Thanks for dropping by and please come back soon....
