John Doe’s 2010 Halloween Movie Marathon. What is on your list?

All hallows eve is upon us again this Sunday and John Doe is having a few friends around for his annual horror movie marathon to celebrate. Halloween has always been one of JD’s favourite traditions and he has fond memories of joining best buddies like Gingersnap and Bryn in Oz for a night of terror.
Moving to the USA however is a completely different world. The holiday is obsessively embraced and now the options for dragging others into a night of hellish nightmares is far more of an event.
Enthusiastic about this year’s program which was compiled by Johnny and his roommate JB, there is a cross section of classics, curios and modern day faves that will hopefully keep all the guests trembling with laughter and fear for the duration.
Opening the 2010 schedule will be Dog Soldiers.
"Delivering gore, giggles and characters to cheer for, Dog Soldiers is not for the squeamish. It’s all about entertainment, don’t look for a deeper meaning just enjoy the ride."
JD has screened this one pretty much every year since its 2002 release and with a few visitors admitting they haven’t seen it before it’s an ideal candidate to get everyone in the blood and guts mood. The second screening of the evening is a wild card. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a film that JD hasn’t seen in about 20 years and was never particularly enamored with. Due to its unusual place in the world of sequels, this non Michael Myers work was intended to launch a Halloween anthology series but the public rejected it with such verve that it failed to catch on. Now that enough time has passed to judge the film without comparison to what came before and after this could be an interesting excursion into “best intentions.”

No Halloween movie marathon would be complete without at least one anthology series. Creepshow is always the obvious answer for this position but Johnny decided to go with the instant cult classic, the highly appropriate Trick R Treat from 2007. As little demons rap upon our door with candy on their minds we will be viewing October 31st through warped eyes.

Following the Trick R Treat collection this is where JD has decided to throw a pitchfork in the machine with the challenging and controversial 30 minute Spanish short Aftermath (1994). Sick, perverted and disturbing this little gem is sure to make some in audience very uncomfortable.

By this time in the evening we should all be ready to change the vibe from fun horror entertainment to the complexities of quirky emotional horror that come from Lucky McKee’s May.
"The film is driven along by deliberate editing, restrained cinematography and an eclectic soundtrack featuring the likes of The Breeders. Not to everyone’s taste, this under seen and largely ignored quirky future cult classic is an original and unique experience that will get under your skin and haunt you."
Very much a modern reinvention of Carrie, its not the suspense of carnage that achieves squirming goals, it’s that we truly care for the plight of the confused and disconnected central character. To read Mr Doe’s full review of May please click HERE.

Needing some relief after the trials of Lucky McKee’s dark, awkward tale, we will be closing the festival with a bonafide, mindless laughfest in the form of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2. Attendees will all be a little sleepy by this late hour, hopefully drunken and toasted too so anything more demanding would probably be a waste of effort. The adventures of Ash and his evil hand should be an ideal finale in the early hours of the morning.
A few runners up that may get screened if we have time include: Into The Mouth of Madness, Peeping Tom, House of the Devil, Experiment in Terror and Audition.
So there you have it, possibly the first marathon JD has organized that will not include any black and white classics (eg: Cat People, Carnival of Souls).
So the only thing left to do now is ask you readers, ‘What’s films are on your own programs for this Halloween?”
