Film & TV on DVD - John Doe Film News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Slamming the clutch down to the floor for another shift of genre gears into the world of getaway driver noir, that Director with the head butt style Nicolas Refn Winding (Pusher, Bronson, Valhalla Rising) peeled out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival with the Best Director prize for his latest work Drive.

"They all have one theme in common: They’re all about transformation. It’s a normal evolution of what interests me".Nicolas Refn Winding discussing the similarities of his films in a recent interview for IndieWire

Dedicated to hallucinatory Director Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, Holy Mountain), the trailer and additional footage that were recently released show a slow burn thriller. A film dense in a fatalistic atmosphere, reeking of burning rubber and a complex character substance lurking in the air like evaporating exhaust fumes.

Ryan Golsing got his hands dirty restoring a 1973 Chevy Malibu in real life to better understand the character.
Based on the novel by James Sallis this is the driver’s (Ryan Goling) gritty story, a Hollywood stunt man by day and robbery wheel man by night. Professional and calculating, a high stakes job spirals and now his execution is ordered.

On the job.
Sure long time readers will know of JD’s affinity for the rev of over horsed engines, the pure adrenalized danger of actual speed stunt driving that rams the hairs on the back of your neck to attention. (See: Ronin, Bullitt, Vanishing Point) But, it's comments like the one in a recent IndieWire interview with the Director in response to his collaboration with Ryan Gosling that really put the tachometer in the red.

“It’s very similar to the way “Bullitt” was made when Steve McQueen wanted Peter Yates to direct it, or when Lee Marvin wanted John Boorman for “Point Blank.”. - Nicolas Refn Winding interviewed by IndieWire

This Driver packs some heat.
Citing Bullitt as a direct influence is always going to up Johnny’s expectations. Beyond that the 7th Street Bridge clip below with its enigmatic central figure just credited as Driver and ice cool police chase that acknowledges the art of discretion oozes the 4 wheel, high speed noir of Walter Hill’s The Driver A high octane mix that JD can not resist.

Fuelled by an exceptional supporting cast that includes Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Ron Perlman (City of Lost Children), Albert Brookes (Out of Sight), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) it’s the combination of factors that sees John Doe almost dumping his diff in anticipation of the September 2011 release date.
