John Doe Reports - David Cronenberg's Latest Projects.
Viggo Mortensen as Freud in David Cronenberg’s "A Dangerous Method" and the Director’s Next Assignment.
John Doe is not alone in his worship of all Director David Cronenberg’s fantasies of the flesh and crisis of identity experiences. Whether he works in horror, science fiction or thrillers there is dark comedy, social commentary and a complex tone that never fails to intrigue. These latest projects continue his existential thematic obsessions.
This week Kinogallery gives us our first look at Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method aka The Talking Cure.
Based on a story by Christopher Hampton, according to imdb this is “A look at how the intense relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud gives birth to psychoanalysis”.
The combination of Viggo and Cronenberg has already birthed two intense journeys into man’s black soul with A History of Violence and Eastern Promises and this third collaboration is shaping up to be equally compelling. Vincent Cassell (Eastern Promises) and Keira Knightley (Never Let Me Go) also star.

Steadily increasing his output while not sacrificing quality, late last month Pajiba reported that Cronenberg’s next will be As She Climbed Across The Table.
Adapted from a novel by sci-fi author Jonathan Letham, the film is described as an Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind type head screw. Here is a taste of what it’s all about courtesy of Wikipedia:
“The physicists in Coombs's lab become obsessed with an artificially-created miniature black hole they call Lack, which appears to have its own personality and preferences. Alice develops a personal relationship with the artificial intelligence that they have created, while Philip becomes jealous of their relationship.”
Rest assured that these two works will stimulate conversation and are worthy of anticipation. Question is what about the other projects that the Director is earmarked for like Cosmopolis, The Matarese Circle and a sequel to Eastern Promises?
Watch an interesting interview that IGN did with the Director a little while back.

I could never get into Cronenberg movies but I did LOVE A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises. Also, I'll never forget his screen presence in the film To Die For with Nicole Kidman. His small role as the hitman was very creepy. For such a small role he did an incredible job. If directing didn't work out for him, he would have done well playing villains.
Viggo Mortensen is one of my favorite actors whom I had the pleasure of meeting on the set of A Perfect Murder. Very nice guy and incredibly intense and soft spoken. The man has absolutely ZERO ego!
Screen Fanatic
I recently read Cosmopolis and would be truly fascinated to see how he brings that to life. DeLillo's prose style is idiosyncratic to say the least and what I would basically deem 'untranslatable' to film (if that's even a word!).

I remember seeing that somewhere to Shaun. Hopefully if we ignore it then Tom and Denzel will go away

Hi Deni,
For me Cronenberg's films are incredibly stimulating and truly original. Unforgettable imagery that sears the minds eye like a babies fetus being sucked threw a straw. He offers food for thought for days to come. Surprisingly subtle in his characters with an intellectual purpose that rewards and stands up to scrutiny.
Viggo is one of my favourites too. So good in Carlito's way. A Perfect Murder was one of the lamest remakes ever, but agree Mr M was its one saving grace.
If your interested i did review A History of Violence HERE and Videodrome (My fave) HERE

I'm with you completely David!
I haven't read "Cosmopolis" yet but have had several recommend it. It does have a reputation for being "unfilmable" so only an artist like Cronenberg could even think of adapting it to cinema. Either way intriguing idea.
