Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Trailer of the Moment: David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method

The Macabre Psychology of Lust?

Is there anyone better to bring the complex genesis of psychoanalysis to the screen than David Cronenberg? (Videodrome, Eastern Promises, A History of Violence)

Let the catharsis begin, it has been nearly a year since John Doe first reported on the flesh for fantasy Director’s next foray into psycho-sexual intensity titled A Dangerous Method. Last week the trailer premiered online and enticed enough to warrant its very own post.

Starring Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence) as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds) as Carl Yung and co starring Keira Knightley (Never Let Me Go) and Vincent Cassell (Eastern Promises), the film begins on the eve of WWI dramatizing the clashing methodologies between the professional pioneers of human psychological analysis.

In real life the erotic id and superego collided with multi tiered, transcendental interpretation over a 6 year collaboration of the mind. The breakthroughs of an aging cocaine ravaged Freud expanded upon by the younger more spiritual Jung. (Simplified version)

The trailer shows hints of these biographical details but seems most intent on proving itself to be, “A film by David Cronenberg”. Kinky manipulative mind games in a rich period setting with the specter of technology and the examination of cultural taboos push moral barometers.

Viggo seems to be well cast as the Oedipus demon wrestling, sex is the primary motivator icon of headshrinkers. Fassbender appears focused on Jung’s own issues...This pair may have been able to even help the Brundle fly work through his suicidal tendencies.

As their patients the British Natalie Portman wants a jolly good spanking. The only flaw appears to be the viewers tolerance for the withdrawn doe eyed perversion of Keira Knightely.

Footage of that looney eyed Frenchman Vincent Cassell jumping the help indicates a little couch time wouldn’t be a bad thing. Either way consider JD scheduling an appointment with the Freud-dude once a release date is announced.

To be honest I wasn't blown away by the trailer. But then that might just be a good thing. I'm a huge fan of both Fassbender, Mortensen and Cassell, but not of Knightley.
What's your least favourite Cronenberg JD? Mine are probably Spider and M. Butterfly. I haven't seen Fast Company yet, but I just recently borrowed the DVD.

Hi Bryn,

It the idea of it more than just the trailer that attracts me.

I haven't seen that many Knightley films but she doesn't ruin things for me

I found Spider fascinating. Exceptionally performed, Directed with surprising restraint.

"M Butterfly" is the one I have seen the least. Not saying its bad, but agree when compared to others in his filmography it fails to penetrate.

Don't forget to enjoy the short films on the "Fast Company" DVD

I've seen the shorts, Stereo and Crimes of the Future, before.
Actually, the more I think about Keira isn't that bad. I just don't gravitate to the movies that she's usually in.
So what are your top five Cronenberg's then?
Difficult, but mine would probably be:
Videodrome
Dead Ringers
The Fly
eXistenZ
A History of Violence
although Crash, Naked Lunch, and Shivers are up there too.

On the Kiera front I really liked Never Let Me Go...The Jacket wasn't bad either.

Can't do a list of top 5 Cronenberg, too painful...Videodrome is #1 though, and I agree with your list. But its tough to leave out , tough to leave out Eastern Promises, Rabid, Scanners and Spider, which all deliver for me.

So you prefer Rabid over Shivers? I'm reviewing Rabid in the next week

Depends on the day with the Rabid versus Shivers...both make my skin crawl.
