John Doe Reports - 007 takes the lead in Fincher’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” remake.

Daniel Craig signs on as Mikael Blomkvist.

Daniel Craig plays the remake game
It seems fatalistic that the day after JD posted his review for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo news comes from deadline.com regarding casting for the U.S. remake.

According to the site, the current James Bond turned Cowboy who fights Aliens, Daniel Craig will be assuming the role of blood hound investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the mystery thriller.

Deadline.com goes on to say –
“Juggling between three studios, Craig will be able to make the movies. Essentially, he will begin work on the first film in Sweden, as soon as he removes his cowboy hat from shooting Cowboys and Aliens in the early fall. Scheduling was coordinated between Dragon Tattoo-maker Sony Pictures Entertainment, DreamWorks partners Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg--who were flexible on the Cowboys and Aliens schedule--and James Bond rights holders Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. The latter situation was tougher because of the uncertainty over when the next Bond film will get made--probably with Sam Mendes directing--because of MGM's paralysis. CAA made Craig's deal.”

Craig does seem to be at the least a physical match for the pivotal character and is a far better choice than the rumoured casting of Brad Pitt.

Not that John Doe has made a decision regarding his feelings about the David Fincher (Fight Club) directed project adapted by Steve Zallian, but it does have a Se7en meets Zodiac vibe that seems to fit his style.

The bigger question that remains is who will play the titular hacker female who has men that hate her. The part of Lisbeth Salander is the hottest casting call in Hollywood and the latest rumors see a shortlist of 6 contenders vying for the spotlight.

Emily Browning may become Lisbeth.
In the running for the coveted role are Aussie actresses Sophie Lowe (All Saints), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sara Snook (Sleeping Beauty) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland). Also up for consideration are Ellen Page (Hard Candy) and Rooney Mara (A Nightmare on Elm Street).

None of these really impress Johnny as being able to pull off what Noomi Rapace did in the original adaptation. Admittedly though they haven’t had that much experience on screen for an objective call.

John Doe favourite Fairuza Balk looks the part without trying
Still Mr Doe finds himself yearning for the Fairuza Balk (American History X, The Craft) from about a decade ago. She would have made the perfect Lisbeth.

So readers, Who do you think would make a good Lisbeth Salander?

The remake is due in cinemas through Sony pictures on December 11th 2011.

Not a bad choice actually JD. He has the craggy intensity required. That press release makes Craig sound like a piece of furniture to be moved back and forth between display units.

Poor bastard. I guess the cheques are some consolation.

I still say give the Salander role to Carey Mulligan. She's the real deal.

Great news JD!!

I also saw an interview with Kristen Stewart while she was in Australia and I know she is also up for contention. While I am not the biggest fan of hers I know she can act and my god does she already have Salander's attitude I think it would work.

It is an interesting combo isn't it Shaun?

Hi David,

Agreed Craig is treated like a commodity...that's stardom for you. He does have the look and presence to fill Mikael's shoes.

As for actresses as Lisbeth, Rose Byrne would be high on my list.

Carey Mulligan, certainly not adverse to the idea.

Hi Jason,

Not that I'm a huge fan but I think Kristen Stewart could pull it off too..not sure if she is in contention anymore but her role in Into The Wild proved she can play subtle.

Interesting! I didn't know Craig was floating between studios. I was wondering what would happen to him since I heard they canceled the next James Bond flick. This post really filled in a LOT of blanks for me!

I hate to sound namby-pamby but, I have to agree with you. I favor Fairuza Balk. I thinj she has the edgy look the part demands.

Nothing namby-pamby about agreeing with me James...in fact i encourage it for egotistical reasons
