David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises Trailer
"As an artist, your responsibility is to be irresponsible. As soon as you talk about social or political responsibility, you've amputated the best limbs you've got as an artist. You are plugging into a very restrictive system that is going to push and mold you, and is going to make your art totally useless and ineffective." – David Cronenberg
Challenging convention, David Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Ringers) is a Director who thrives in an environment of social taboos, confronting violence and provocative eroticism. A unique talent who tackles complex issues of humanity’s darker nature with bold daring and horrific visceral staging.
"Censors tend to do what only psychotics do: they confuse reality with illusion." – David Cronenberg
Exciting news, yesterday over on YahooMovies they released the first trailer for his latest opus titled Eastern Promises. Due for release in Australia on the 25th of October 2007 this tale of London mobsters, sex trafficking and redemption promises another powerful experience.
Reuniting with journeyman star Viggo Mortensen (LOTR, Indian Runner, Albino Alligator, Carlito’s Way) for a second time, his enigmatic lead plays Nikolia Luzhin, a vicious and brutal London underworld figure with ties to the Russian mafia.
Existing in a meticulously constructed reality, his world is shattered when an innocent woman, Anna (Naomi Watts) discovers evidence that could put his bosses in jail and challenges his loyalties.
Euro-cool Frenchman, Mr Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel (The Apartment, Crimson Rivers, Doberman, Irreversible) also stars along side Armin Mueller-Stahl (Leningrad, The Game), Sinead Cusack (V for Vendetta) and Donald Sumpter (The Constant Gardner).
In a world where the latest comic book adventure gets a zillion dollar budget, this steadfast artist still struggles to find funding for each new project. Working outside the system, Cronenberg’s previous effort A History of Violence garnered universal industry praise but as always failed to capitalize into studio support.
"As filmmaker, I ask questions but don't have answers. Moviemaking is a philosophical exploration. I invite the audience to come on the journey and discover what they think and feel." – David Cronenberg
Continuing on his own path towards a personal cinematic destiny David Cronenberg is determined to continue to tell the stories that interest him. Refusing to succumb to the mainstream pressures of toning down his blood soaked, sexually charged imagination, John Doe waits patiently for each new helping of decadent cerebral voyeurism from this cult auteur.
"I have no rules. For me, it's a full, full experience to make a movie. It takes a lot of time, and I want there to be a lot of stuff in it. You're looking for every shot in the movie to have resonance and want it to be something you can see a second time, and then I'd like it to be something you can see 10 years later, and it becomes a different movie, because you're a different person. So that means I want it to be deep, not in a pretentious way, but I guess I can say I am pretentious in that I pretend. I have aspirations that the movie should trigger off a lot of complex responses." – David Cronenberg

Im a big Viggo fan too and Vincent Cassel is up there too...
Naomi Watts does nothing for me. Her performances always feel so uneven, one second bland, boring walking through the part, then extreme shift to over the top when emotion is required. I enjoyed 21 Gram and Assassination of Richard Nixon but it was despite her presence.
The name Cronenberg is what has me all worked up with anxiety, he has never made a film I didn't enjoy.
Thanks for dropping by, always cool to see you.

Most people consider A History of Violence to be his most "accesible" so maybe he is looking to infect a broader crowd with Eastern Philosophies.
The trailer does look intriguing, so now its this film and PTA's There Will Be Blood that are JD's most anticipated films of the moment.....the movie world is looking bright, in a dark, moody and complex way.

Good to see you hyped for this Kronk-en-lurker release.
Hi Cib,
You should check out some of his work, have you seen VideoDrome or A History of Violence yet?
Hi Steandric,
Naomi does do a pretty nifty brit accent in this by the looks of things. As you probably read in the comments Im not a huge fan of her, but its great that there is so much interest circulating for the film.
Good to see you, drop by anytime.
