David Fincher talks Zodiac
David Fincher tracks down the Zodiac Killer?
Coming Soon: Due for Australian release May 17 2007
Seems John Doe is on a News kick recently. Life has got in the way of viewing habits over the last few weeks, for the better.
But I know you didn’t come here to read about the nihilistic Johnny, you came for the latest on uber Director David Fincher’s (Fight Club, Se7en, The Game) Zodiac.
The film is a newsroom thriller that speculates on the Zodiac serial killer who rampaged through San Fransico in the late 1960’s. Taunting the media with letters about his deeds, confessing to 37 vicious attacks over a 10 month period, 7 were confirmed and he was never captured.
Ever since there has been rumours and investigations about the true identity of the murderer and Fincher's latest attempts to put the myriad of pieces together.

Already screening in the U.S and Due for Release May 7th in Australia, over at Popmatters.com there is a series of interviews with the Director that will interest fans and those curious about the film.
Zodiac stars Jake Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Mark Ruffalo (You Can Count ON Me), Robert Downey Jnr(A Scanner Darkly), Brian Cox (ManHunter), Elias Koteas (Gattaca) and Anthony Edwards (Gotcha).
Diverting from Se7en territory, the filmmaker takes a more low key approach that sounds like it borders on documentary style.

Q: You also resisted the temptation to make the movie scary in a traditional sense. The murders play out in a very flat manner. I think the scariest moment in the whole movie is when one of the cops notices the particular kind of watch a suspect is wearing.
A: We wanted the murder sequences to feel like you were there. When we asked Mike Mageau and Bryan Hartnell (the Zodiac’s two surviving victims, who served as consultants on the film) about it, they both said it came out of nowhere and happened very, very quickly.
If you stretch the moment and you make it about a close-up of the guy’s feet walking through the reeds—as soon as you amp it up, it becomes serial-killer porn. I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to capture the feeling of what it would be like to be there chatting with your girlfriend, life seems OK and two minutes later, you’re listening to someone scream for their life and you’re hoping the police show up.
My goal from the beginning was to make a scary movie that would have the same effect on the audience as (the real-life case) had on me. But I didn’t want to pander and I didn’t want to be salacious. It’s not just a Friday night at a scary movie. It’s not “Saw.”

“I looked at this as a newspaper movie. My model was `All the President’s Men.’ You piece the thing together with a bit of info here, a hunch there, and you make mistakes long the way, and maybe you end up with an supportable conclusion as to the when and where and how. ... And maybe, with someone like Zodiac, even he couldn’t provide an answer, I don’t know.”
