Film & TV on DVD - John Doe News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

John Doe is Sicko.

DVD Therapy, what helps you get through?

Indiana Jones DVD cover
the man with the hat and the whip still gets me by

Don’t be fooled by the title, this doesn’t mean John Doe has gone to South America to make a documentary about the hypocrisies of health care.

Contracting a solid dose of the flu mixed with Gastroenteritis, it has been 7 days since JD was first struck down, glow in the dark green flem oozes, sticky snot seeps and the brain, well the brain is in Barbara Bush mode and just says “NO”. (I've been slimed like a Ghostbuster)

Unable to claw his way to the PC till today, a full week later and still not feeling much better this is the first day Johnny has been able to strings a sentence together. (Not very well mind you)

Bedridden, full of medication, (not the good kind) and incapable of doing much else other than vegetating, JohnD has had a hard time processing new information. The one positive of course is that movie watching is about all he can do.

Curled up on the couch, revisiting old favourites that demand nothing of his mind due to infinite screenings, these are some of the DVD’s that have made there way into the player during this week of woe.

The Professionals
One of the many DVD's that has helped JD this week

Back to the Future Trilogy
The Indiana Jones Trilogy
Die Hard
The Godfather Trilogy
The Man With No Name Trilogy
Sneakers
Wargames
From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/Thunderball
The Princess Bride
Scaramouche
Lady Hawke
Krull
Tron
Terminator
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
SpaceBalls
Galaxy Quest
The Great Escape
The Magnificent 7
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Professionals
The Dirty Dozen

The room is starting to spin again so I will have to cut my list short, its time to go lie down…….Johnny hopes to be back on board Monday morning but in the interim, What are some the movies that distract you from illness?

John,

when I'm sick, I usually throw in a series of flicks for distraction...

The Matrix Series
The Raiders Series (your personal favorite as well I see)
As Good As It Gets
The Frisco Kid (an oldie but hilariously funny)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (another oldie but a goodie)
Silverado...

and Stargate SG-1 ( I have the entire series mind you lol)

Hope you get to feeling better buddy, the flu is one nasty assed customer!

Be well and take care,

Nick

7,

Just a few since you're a sicko.

Basically, anything pacy, even a little B-grade or trashy which don't tax the brain too much.

Enemy of the State
Spy Games
Bourne I &II.
Payback.

There's a few I'll always watch which aren't pacey, but since I know them so well, I don't have to concentrate on them. Cape Fear,Blue Velvet, Barton Fink, Taxi Driver, Citizen X, Love Serenade, etc ...

I usually love to watch something hardcore blood and gutsy like Braindead with a nice hot thick fish milk shake at my side! MMMMMM!! LOL (sorry mate, couldn't resist)

John

American Graffiti and True Grit should also be part of the prescriptive list for the bedridden and terminally flemmish.

Cheers

I like films that require no thinking on my part at all. SOme of them you've listed above:

While You Were Sleeping (the only chick flick I truly love)
Indiana Jones trilogy
Star Wars trilogy (not the new ones)
Clerks
Speed
Mall Rats
Empire Records
The Breakfast Club
The Family Guy - sometimes my tiny sick brain can only work in short 20 min intervals, so cartoons are good
American Dad - for the same reason as Family Guy

I hope that you're feeling better soon!

Sorry to hear you’re unwell JohnD,

Winter is a time for rest though and this sounds superb (if you don’t count the slimey bits.

I loved your list and can’t believe that not only have you seen Buckaroo Bonzai but also Krull? … I love that film...especially that Changeling...oowww, creepy.

I like silly things when I’m unwell like Groundhog Day, and chick flicks… lots and lots of chick flicks …oh and Back to the Future and Indiana are just perfect *chuckle*

Then? …I’d probably watch the entire seven seasons of Voyager again *lol* followed by the entire first season of the original Start Trek again... both reserved for when I am very unwell, because if I dooze off, I know where I am when I awake *lol* ...

It seems I missed the Dominian War completely though…Wh-a-a-t?

Will have to watch all of Deep Space Nine and Next Gen. next time I'm ill, to find out what was happening in the Alpha Quadrant, whilst I was zooming about the Delta Quadrant meeting new races?

Rest well.

Lilla ...

I don't think I can really answer this question since I haven't been sick in 3 years....!

I go for fantasy or 80's - many of which have been mentioned, plus Titan AE. TV series on DVD is great when sick - cause you can just select "play all" on many of them and you dont have to even touch the remote for half the day !

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hmm films when ill. It's a tough one as normally when I'm ill I'm still having to look after my son as hubby has to work. I know the last time I was too ill to do anything constructive I did put on Pixar's CARS which I still love watching, it has to be a must. Also other biggies would be ET and Grease (my all time two top favourite films) which I've seen so many times that it doesn't matter if I zone out. Oh and Back to the Future, gotta love that.

Now I want to be ill so I can have a day watching movies.

Hope you feel better soon.

HI John

Did you end up watching much? Usually when I'm sick I like to get some light-hearted stuff, something that doesn't make me think too much.

Hope you're feeling better,

Tracy

Hi JD, just catching up with your stuff..it's great to be reading your brilliant reviews again, not to mention your thought-provoking (albeit snot-covered) questions..hope you're better now!

A great sicko list for me is pure entertainment, preferably extended, that doesn't require a high amount of concentration, so--

-Any of the old Harryhausen movies
-In Harm's Way
-The Man with the Golden Arm
-Galaxy Quest
-Any old Fred Astaire movie--I turn down the sound and just watch his incredible dancing
-and everything on your list, haha!

Yes, I'm the same as you Armenta, I can only handle easily digestible stuff...i.e. rhubarb shows!! I like to laugh when I'm sick so I tend to go for those sorts of things that doesn't overtax my fragile brain.
