Coming Soon: February DVD 2007 releases
Coming Soon: Australian DVD and Cinema Releases for February 2007
John Doe’s running a little late with his February coming soon list, but as you will see there is plenty to get excited about this month. Regular readers will know that this is a list of the films that JD is interested in, not a complete run down of everything out this month.
February 4
Directed by Shane Meadows (24/7) and starring Paddy Considine (24hr Party People, Bouncer) , Gary Stretch and Seamus O Neil. This quality serial revenge thriller made the grade and was in JD’s Top 13 of 2007. (Click link to read a brief JD review and see the trailer
A Praire Home Companion (2006)
Director Robert Altman’s (The Long Goodbye, MASH, McCabe and Mrs Miller, Nashville, The Player etc) final film is fittingly a study of times gone by and very real human emotion. Starring an ensemble cast that includes John C Riley, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Lindsay Lohan.
February 8
Cecil B De Mille’s The Greatest Show On Earth (1952)
February 14
Ray Harryhaussen The Early Years Collection- Im not sure which films are going to be in this collection, but click HERE to see a brilliant video of his work and read a brief bio by your truly.
Addams Family-Volume 1 (1961)
There creepy and there kooky…..the original TV show finally arrives down under on DVD

Oz season 1 (1997)
Created by Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Streets), TV doesn’t get any more ballsy than this. Oz stands for Oswald maximum security prison, a place where the most brutal prisoners are doing there stretch.
This jail bird drama is brutal, sadistic and hilarious, thanks to a brilliant script that is full of humanity and a sardonic sense of humour. Would have to be in JD’s top 10 shows ever made.

Oliver Stone’s World Trade Centre (2006)-
Johnny boy still hasn’t seen this one, but as a die hard Oliver Stone fanatic it would be wrong for me not to put it up there. Must admit that it actually doesn’t appeal that much hence the delay, but I will check it out.
February 21
Children of Men (2006)
This mighty effort from last year may well be the best film I saw 2006. Based on the PD James novel, check out the trailer and read a brief JD synopsis HERE. Starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine.
Running Scared (2006)
A guilty pleasure, I hate Paul Walker but this action comedy is so unashamedly energetic that John Doe was held captive by its tongue in cheek screenplay, rampaging, edgy comic book brutality and nifty cinematography and editing. Not a great film, but a fun one…

Shortbus (2006)
Weeds Season 1 (2005)
Northern Exposure Season 5

The Last King of Scotland
From one of JD’s favourite documentary Directors Kevin McDonald (One Day In September, Touching The Void) comes the story of Idi Amin’s relationship with a fictional Scottish Doctor. Fascinated with Amin for years, I look forward to seeing this on the big screen. Oh and Forrest Whitaker (Ghost Dog, Colour Of Money) may finally win some Oscar love.

Leonard Cohen Im Your Man
A documentary musical salute to the melancholy poet who’s lyrics explore the potential of human emotion.
Stranger than Fiction (2006)
Twisted looking Charlie Kauffman style comedy that should stimulate thought and provoke laughter-starring Dustin Hoffman and Will Farrel.
February 8
Smokin’ Aces
I have been talking up volatile Director Joe Carnahan’s (Narc) next film for a while now, it looks like a good wham bam action film with smarts. Please click HERE to read the blog I did a month or so ago and view the trailers.
Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny
Jack Black and his musical ambitions hit the big screen…could go either way
Little Children
From the Director of In The Bedroom, Bryn over at Horrorphile saw an advanced screening of this and recommended it. Hopes for its potential as it looks like it tackles some taboos, even if I’m not a Kate Winslett fan….Jennifer Connelly will always get me into a cinema.
February 15
The Good Shepard
Robert De Niro directs a film about the birth of the CIA. Written by Eric Roth (The Insider) and Starring Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Billy Cruddup, Timothy Hutton, Michael Gambon, William Hurt, Alec Baldwin and Joe Pesci.

Looking forward to Children of Men, though...

Ive heard some bad things too about Smokin Aces, but I rank the Director high enough to give it a chance, plus Ari Gold (jeremy Piven) is doing his Entourage thing which will make me laugh. It is an Affleck film though which frightens me.
Children Of Men is a must.

I'm defintiely ooking forward to The Last King of Scotland, and Bobby looks really good, what a cast!!! Looks very moving too (what is the song being used "Break my Faith"??) ...
I've seen Little Children and Stranger Than Fiction, both excellent.
The Good Shepard looks very competent, but perhaps a little pedestrian .... I'm not a big Matt Damon fan to be honest ...
Smokin' Aces, I'm not getting my hopes up for ... A friend of mine had mixed feelings about it (he's seen a media screening, which I obviously missed) ... but Alicia Keys looks dynamite ...
Film & TV on DVD
Im totally skeptical of Good Shepard too, for the same reasons!
Bobby has me curious, though it isnt getting much talk down here in the states it was a buzz.
Smokin Aces is definetly a wild card, but one Im willing to hype up till I see...I remember Kiss Kiss Bang Bang recieving mixed reviews initially too.
Im still a little ashamed that I inlcuded Running Scared up there...
