This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

The 2007 Filmink Awards- A John Doe Exclusive

The 2007 Filmink Awards- An Overview

A blessing or a curse, who knows but readers may have noticed John Doe’s absence of a post yesterday. The reason is that straight after work, as a freelancer for the magazine he attended the 2007 FilmInk Movie Awards.

Nursing a vicious hangover today JD thought it would be fun to recall some of what he remembers before the excessive consumption of Tequila based cocktails eradicated his short term memory.

He didn’t really pay that much attention to the red carpet arrivals with the likes of Pia Miranda, Brendan Cowell, Tara Moss and Emily Barclay turning up along with a host soapy and reality TV faces that Johnny didn’t recognize.

A bold faced hypocrite after ridiculing the attention starved celebrity mentality, Doe couldn’t resist when he was approached to walk down the red carpet for a photo opportunity. After basking in the empty glow of flash bulbs it was time to find his seat for the presentations to begin.

More of a tongue in cheek, MTV movie awards type affair than Canne or even the A.F.I, here is a list of the categories and winners: (In brackets the nominees that JD voted for)

BEST AUSTRALIAN FILM – Kenny-(Jindabyne)

BEST SORT – Penelope Cruz(Monica Belluci)

BEST DOCUMENTARY – An Inconvenient Truth(The Aristocrats)

BEST AUSTRALIAN NEWCOMER – Shane Jacobsen (Kenny)(Simon Stone)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN AUSSIE IN AN OVERSEAS MOVIE – Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain)(Hugh Jackman/The Prestige)

BEST MOVIE REMAKE-The Departed

BEST BLOW IN – Emily Barclay (Suburban Mayhem)(Gabriel Byrne/Jindabyne)

BEST POLITICALLY CHARGED MOVIE – An Inconvenient Truth(Road to Guantanamo)

BEST GIRRRRRL POWER MOVIE – Hard Candy

BEST MOVIE MIND F#$K - Hostel(A Scanner Darkly)

BEST MOVIE MOUSTACHE – Borat(Colin Farrell/Miami Vice)

BEST FILM – Little Miss Sunshine

WORST FILM- Can’t remember the winner, but they were all bad.

With only 2 or 3 people on hand to accept the awards, a lot of padding was needed from the compaires. Obviously Scorsese, Al Gore etc really wanted to be here but…) The show was very laid back, no one taking it seriously and the heavily scripted repartee, laughably bad.

After the show it was into a shuttle bus and off to the important part of the evening, the open bar after party. The booze flowed liberally, the flirting increased as stilettos attached to sleek toned legs became more open to suggestion.

Johnny doesn’t drink often, but he cut loose last night, trying to network and coerce producers and stars into supporting his screenplays….just like every wannabe script writer there. Of course because of his lack of ability to process ethanol at a steady pace due to substance abuse at young age, soon the hand eye coordination vanished and was replaced by a stumbling, babbling fool.

It was fun to dress up and rub shoulders with some Aussie industry elite, unlike in the US everyone was very approachable and open in conversation. There was good humour all round and the overall verdict was a “Great night”.

Special props must go out to the Crescent Hotel in Kings Cross for their incredible party snack of traditional, Italian style Pizza. I think it saved a life, mine.

Check out the official Awards website www.filminkawards.com.au Hopefully there will be video footage and photos online soon.

Yep, I didnt understand how it fell into that category either. It seemed like a straight forward plot line to me, that dragged in the first half and didnt deliver on the second. A slit achiles heal did little to quel my own blood lust.

The worst film crown went to "Basic Instinct 2" - to quote the presenter "So bad that even the vagina didn't appear in the sequel" .

Great night !

Sounds like you had a lot of fun, JD! )
I can't believe Heath Ledger is still winning awards for BM... wasn't it released in 2005? (Early 2006 in Australia, but still...)
