“This is the battle for the soul of our society”
Ass fucking mother fucker of a cunt faced fuck stain. Freedom of speech, it’s a wonderful thing. This is a documentary all about one little four letter word out of the infinite number that exist.
“I think there is a little bit to much free speech” – Concerned Citizen
A word that has been given power by the self righteous who oppose it and allowed the liberated to easily push the envelope by saying a simple word to stir up censorship.
“Fuck” tackles the words origins and evolution. Despite urban myth, no it is not an acronym for anything. No one actually knows when the first man (or woman) uttered the word fuck, but most linguistic experts agree that it was probably around since JC was walking the earth.
A quick flash of history. Fuck first appeared in print around the 13th century. Fuck was first added to the dictionary in the late 16th century. The first studio picture to have fuck said aloud was Robert Altman’s M.A.S.H.
“Fuck” the documentary puts a microscope up to the words many uses, meanings and inflections, the many variations and interpretations. Up until the 20th century it was pretty much raunchy slang for sex. It wasn’t until the soldiers in WWII got a hold of it and started the whole, “What the fuck was that?”, “We are all fucked!” and “Fuck the war!” style of modern context.
Told through interviews and archival footage with numerous conservative and liberal faces, linguists, entertainers and media personalities, they all share their passionate arguments for and against our right to say and write the word fuck.
“If you cannot say the word fuck, then you can’t say fuck the government” – Lenny Bruce
The word fuck is said 857 times throughout the documentary, sometimes in anger, other times in love, frequently to educate, and often to make you laugh as you learn.
“Fuck off. It’s universally understood anywhere in the world.” – Billy Connelly
John Doe says:
Hilarious and Intelligent, this is a fuckin’ well researched and structured documentary. Fuck, the documentary is about a lot more than just snickers at hearing naughty words. Its about freedom of speech, you either got it, or you don’t.
There is no middle ground with the issue, either you say what is on your mind, or censorship orders that you don’t. Sometimes a personalized four letter word communicates emotion more efficiently than any other combination of words in the English language.
A lot of different points of view are shared some thoughtful, some not. The religious preach that God will send you to hell for swearing. Concerned groups making financial gains from the debate stand by the fact that if a kid hears swearing, it will warp their fragile little minds.
Prejudging citizens jump to the conclusion that if you swear you must be uneducated or a “bad person. That somehow because you choose to say fuck, instead of flaunt your education or word knowledge that many around you may not have, you come from poverty.
This may have been true back when homosexuals, women, blacks and non-anglo were randomly lynched or declared An American Were-Witch in Salem, but in 2007 its ridiculous we haven’t evolved past the fight or flee mentality when it comes to cosmetic differences.
In typical form, Hunter S Thompson rants and raves like a loon, entertaining with his limitless fervour for the subject. We get to see vintage George Carlin in the form of the now famous “7 words you can’t say on TV” bit, and a high quality, much deserving worship for Lenny Bruce and his social awakening brand of comedy.
Of course there are also more qualified personnel on hand to share their minds with us, presidents and other politicians for example.
John Doe has to laugh at the fact that such a big deal is made of one particular word, or is that 7. The fact is vocabulary is there to use. Even if I knew every word (damn George Carlin) in every language, there would still be occasions where fuck would sum it up to perfection.
Just like anything else, people abuse privileges, and free speech is most certainly a privilege in this world of 2007. For those who think it pollutes the soul and culture, the documentary “Fuck” illustrates quite well that if the word is used without taboo and repeatedly, it soon loses all its strength and hence attraction. Only because we react to it does it have enticement to adults and children alike.
The DVD:Coming to DVD: April 18 2007
No press yet on the extras, but if Aristocrats is anything to go by, it should have deleted scenes and commentaries.

Besides, I have to say it, I love the word fuck. It's one of the most useful words in the english language.
Thanks for the Carlin clip. I'd forgotten how funny he was.
And come on, is there anything cuter than a three year old yelling DAMN IT! when he's angry?
Definitly have to check this one out, even if I really didn't "get" the Aristocrats.

And the word is...freedom.
Fuck.
That's deep.
Sort of.
This dialogue came to mind (and I had to cheat and look it up because I couldn't remember exactly what was said) from one of my favourite movies and this has really got nothing to do with anything but I'm writing it anyway...
Archie: How very interesting. You're a true vulgarian, aren't you?
Otto: You're the vulgarian, you fuck.
Kevin Kline (Otto) and John Cleese (Archie) in 'A Fish Called Wanda'.
Hope you're well JD.
