Glen Ford 1916-2006
Glen Ford: In Memorium
I don't normally post twice in a day, but i really needed to show my respects to this early idol of mine."If they try to rush me, I always say, I've only got one other speed and it's slower." - Glen Ford
"I never thought I would become an actor. I never gave it a second thought because a long time ago, I was told I wasn't the type." - Glen Ford
I have just read (www.imdb.com) that legendary actor Glen Ford passed away on Wednesday the 30th of August after struggling with his health for a decade. I remember sitting down with my dad when I was young and watching reruns of his films on the box.
The Family friendly Courtship of Eddie’s Father is one of the first movies I saw with the man and is still a very entertaining Disney style tale. Playing a school teacher in The BlackBoard Jungle is another moment of Fords that has stayed with me and I have revisited repeatedly.
Since then I became a fan in my own right, Glen Ford was a fine, under stated actor who always brought humanity to every role he did. Likeable and laid back, for my generation his role as Johnathon Kent in Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie is the one for which he is best remembered.
Over the years I have gotten to see many of his films, obviously charming, beneath the surface always lurked deeper emotion. A presence to be reckoned with, in Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat he played a cop who goes head to head with the mob and is dragged down to their level. This is one of his finest performances for me and really shows his range as an actor.
Also in the noir genre, Ford starred opposite Rita Hayworth in the noir classic Gilda, which is the role that made him a household name.
In Delmar Davies atmospheric western 3.10 to Yuma, written by Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown) Ford plays the villain Ben Wade. Captured by Lawman Dan Evans (Van Hefflin) and waiting to be picked up by the train that is due to take him to death row. The film takes place mainly indoors and is a character piece that is full of thoughtful ideas and superb chemistry between the leads. (Other classic Ford westerns Jubal, Cowboy and Cimmaron)
Blake Edwards Experiment in Fear has my vote for his most underrated and underseen performance, a gripping film and a unique role.
To wrap up here are a few other performances that stand out for me in his career:
The Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse
Ransom (Original of the Mel Gibson film)
Trial,
PocketFul Of Miracles
Lust For Gold
The Secret Of Convict Lake.
A sad day for me, Glen Ford’s films are close to my heart and now that this star from yesteryear has passed I only hope that my little post here inspires someone to watch his films.
Mr Ford thank you for the moments of joy and understanding you gave me, I know you've gone to that big cinema in the sky.
R.I.P you will be forever missed.

Trust me when I say that with great film knowledge comes great sacrifice in the "real" world. Some would say its an unhealthy obsession.
You have to have seen Superman: The Movie though, right?
Bit of pointless trivia, Director James Mangold (Identity, Walk The Line, Heavy, Copland) is remaking the Delmar Davis original 3.10 to Yuma with Christina Bale in the Van Hefflin role and Russel Crowe as Glen Ford's bad man Ben Wade. (Im not a Crowe fan but I dig Bale and Mangold)

He also Tivo's the TV shows that are screening (eg DeadWood 3, Sopranos 6 etc) and sends them on disc for me.
I freelance as a film journalist and have friends who work in the industry who provide me with promo DVDs to review. They send me to screenings every couple of weeks too.
I also work parttime at JB Hi Fi in DVD's so I buy a lot through them too.

So do any of Glen Fords Films sound up your alley?

So, I'm inclined to be picky about what to add to my worryingly long must-see list, and resigned to the fact that there's brilliant films out there that I might never see in this lifetime.
Will read over your entry again and ponder.

When i read a review Im muchmore intereted in what someone thought of the film and with their own life experiences what they thought the film was trying to say and be.
In the case of this thread, I just wanted to offer a taster of Glen Fords Filmography, figure those interested would look into his films.
