Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Glen Ford 1916-2006

Glen Ford: In Memorium
I don't normally post twice in a day, but i really needed to show my respects to this early idol of mine.

"If they try to rush me, I always say, I've only got one other speed and it's slower." - Glen Ford

"I never thought I would become an actor. I never gave it a second thought because a long time ago, I was told I wasn't the type." - Glen Ford

I have just read (www.imdb.com) that legendary actor Glen Ford passed away on Wednesday the 30th of August after struggling with his health for a decade. I remember sitting down with my dad when I was young and watching reruns of his films on the box.

The Family friendly Courtship of Eddie’s Father is one of the first movies I saw with the man and is still a very entertaining Disney style tale. Playing a school teacher in The BlackBoard Jungle is another moment of Fords that has stayed with me and I have revisited repeatedly.

Since then I became a fan in my own right, Glen Ford was a fine, under stated actor who always brought humanity to every role he did. Likeable and laid back, for my generation his role as Johnathon Kent in Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie is the one for which he is best remembered.

Over the years I have gotten to see many of his films, obviously charming, beneath the surface always lurked deeper emotion. A presence to be reckoned with, in Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat he played a cop who goes head to head with the mob and is dragged down to their level. This is one of his finest performances for me and really shows his range as an actor.

Also in the noir genre, Ford starred opposite Rita Hayworth in the noir classic Gilda, which is the role that made him a household name.

In Delmar Davies atmospheric western 3.10 to Yuma, written by Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown) Ford plays the villain Ben Wade. Captured by Lawman Dan Evans (Van Hefflin) and waiting to be picked up by the train that is due to take him to death row. The film takes place mainly indoors and is a character piece that is full of thoughtful ideas and superb chemistry between the leads. (Other classic Ford westerns Jubal, Cowboy and Cimmaron)

Blake Edwards Experiment in Fear has my vote for his most underrated and underseen performance, a gripping film and a unique role.

To wrap up here are a few other performances that stand out for me in his career:
The Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse
Ransom (Original of the Mel Gibson film)
Trial,
PocketFul Of Miracles
Lust For Gold
The Secret Of Convict Lake.

A sad day for me, Glen Ford’s films are close to my heart and now that this star from yesteryear has passed I only hope that my little post here inspires someone to watch his films.

Mr Ford thank you for the moments of joy and understanding you gave me, I know you've gone to that big cinema in the sky.

R.I.P you will be forever missed.

You know, the main thing that comes through, for me, in this post, is how freaking impressive your film knowledge is. I don't think I've seen any of those films that you move between so easily.

Thanks Adrian,

Trust me when I say that with great film knowledge comes great sacrifice in the "real" world. Some would say its an unhealthy obsession.

You have to have seen Superman: The Movie though, right?

Bit of pointless trivia, Director James Mangold (Identity, Walk The Line, Heavy, Copland) is remaking the Delmar Davis original 3.10 to Yuma with Christina Bale in the Van Hefflin role and Russel Crowe as Glen Ford's bad man Ben Wade. (Im not a Crowe fan but I dig Bale and Mangold)

Okay, Superman would be the exception to the movies I hadn't seen.

Question: how many movies do you watch a week anyway? I normally watch three or four, and maybe a play or two.

Since about 8 years old Ive watched films every day of my life pretty much, I went through yearsof no TV just movies, averaging 4 or 5 a day. When Im not screening films I read.

Now i watch one or two on weekdays after work and up to 6 in a day on weekends.

Fortunately im now working as a freelance writer so my pasion is beginning to pay.

Okay, one more question: where do you access all the movies?
6. September 1st 2006 @ 13:33. JohnDoe Says:
Ive got a buddy in the US who I email monthly with a list of DVds to buy for me.

He also Tivo's the TV shows that are screening (eg DeadWood 3, Sopranos 6 etc) and sends them on disc for me.

I freelance as a film journalist and have friends who work in the industry who provide me with promo DVDs to review. They send me to screenings every couple of weeks too.

I also work parttime at JB Hi Fi in DVD's so I buy a lot through them too.

Sounds expensive. You don't do the rental thing?
8. September 1st 2006 @ 23:31. JohnDoe Says:
No I havent rented for years, I do have access to freebies and get alot sent to me. When I buy its usually at wholesale prices.

So do any of Glen Fords Films sound up your alley?
9. September 2nd 2006 @ 02:42. Adrian Says:
Well, in all honesty, yes and no. Yes, because I'm curious to see who this guy is who's meant so much to you. But no because I didn't get enough of the sense of the movies, from your descriptions, to pull me in.

So, I'm inclined to be picky about what to add to my worryingly long must-see list, and resigned to the fact that there's brilliant films out there that I might never see in this lifetime.

Will read over your entry again and ponder.

I hate nothing more than reading reviews where they give away the story, so generally i just do a very brief synopsis, trying not spoil the fun.

When i read a review Im muchmore intereted in what someone thought of the film and with their own life experiences what they thought the film was trying to say and be.

In the case of this thread, I just wanted to offer a taster of Glen Fords Filmography, figure those interested would look into his films.

I'm down with JohnDoe... I don't like hearing plot synopsis in reviews, so I rarely talk about the story. I'm more interested in the atmosphere and the impression cast by the film...
12. September 4th 2006 @ 02:03. Adrian Says:
I'm with JD as well! I don't like a review being a spoiler, so to speak.
13. September 4th 2006 @ 02:14. JohnDoe Says:
Group hug gang. I shall remain spoiler free in my approach.

Hey Cib, are you a fan of Glen Ford, or seen any of his films?
