“That watch costs more than you car. I made $970,000 last year. How much you make? You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy? I don't give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here - close! You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit? You don't like it, leave”-Blake

Based on his stage play, Writer David Mamet’s (The Verdict, State and Main, House Of Games, Spartan) sizzling drama takes the art of bullshiting to new heights with this complex study of the male hierarchy in a Real Estate office.

The microscope is put up close and personal to the inner complexities of a life in sales and the twisted group dynamic that develops within a crew.

Fuelled by money, commissions, percentages your entire self worth is judged solely on your potential to generate income.
“A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing”-Blake

It’s a vicious and cutthroat world where sympathy and empathy are for the weak. Confidence and self esteem are fed directly by the mighty dollar.
“These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. To you, these are gold; you do not get these. Because to give them to you would be throwing them away.”- Blake

The office is run by John Williamson (Kevin Spacey) a numbers man who lacks experience and is looking for approval.
“Let me tell you something, Shelly. I do what I'm hired to do. I'm...wait a second. I'm hired to watch the leads. I'm given...hold on, I'm given a policy. My job is to do that. What I'm told. That's it. You, wait a second, anybody falls below a certain mark I'm not permitted to give them the premium leads.” John Williamson

His team is headed by Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), the superstar salesman with the gift of the gab and a velvet tongue. Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon) is the sympathetic, old time player who is all but fizzled. (Gil in The Simpsons is modelled after him).
“What is this "you say"? A deal kicks out...I got to eat. Shit, Williamson, shit. You...Moss...Roma...look at the sheets...look at the sheets. Nineteen eighty,
eighty-one...eighty-two...six months of eighty-two...who's there? Who's up there?”-
Shelley

Dave Moss (Ed Harris) and George (Alan Arkin) are disgruntled workers tired of gambling on the next big sale and looking for a short cut to wealth.
"Fuck you, Dave. You know you got a big mouth. You make a close, this whole place stinks with your farts for a week - how much you just ingested. Oh, what a big man you are! "Hey, let me buy you a pack of gum. I'll show you how to chew it." Whoof! You're pal closes, and all that comes out of your mouth is bile. Ooh, how fucked-up you are!"-Ricky Roma

This already shaky microcosm has the foundations ripped out when head office hot shot Blake (Alec Baldwin) comes in to clean house with promises of fresh “leads” and to brutally sort the c-losers from the losers.
“We're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired”.-Blake

John Doe says:
Who knew that a film about Real Estate could be more gripping than any number of high concept thrillers?

Incredibly this was an HBO made for cable movie, Director James Foley (At Close Range, Confidence) assembles academy calibre thespians and gives them a juicy script where every role is completely flushed out.

The devastating screenplay is brimming with double meaning and hidden slices of wisdom and is the launching block for performances of Olympian standards.

The strength of David Mamets scripts is in what he doesn’t say, allowing the actors to communicate volumes with subtle gestures, mannerisms and an appropriate word builds the drama.

The loaded dialogue flows fast and loose, the camera silently watches the action just like we do. The score floats in and out allowing the all important characters to come through and capture our attention.

You can’t really signal out any one player as the star, All enjoy the verbal jousting and there one ups man ship jumps of the screen.

Alec Baldwin (Hunt For Red October, Miami Blues, State and Main) certainly goes beyond his limitations to deliver his brief but unforgettable portrayal of a ruthless, cutthroat corporate man.

Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon both have some great lines and effortlessly give them a feeling of complete realism. Ed Harris (Paris trout, The Right Stuff, Pollock) and Alan Arkin (Wait Until Dark, Catch 22, Freebie and Bean, The 7% Solution, Grosse point Blanke) are the sort of actors who are good even in bad films, here they soar.

Kevin Spacey rounds out the ensemble, shining just as bright.

All you struggling Gordon Gekko’s and future entrepenuers, heed the warning of this dark little tale of greed and corruption.

The DVD:
As I said earlier this was a made for cable film so it is in the 4:3 format, with Dolby stereo sound. No extras either but don’t let this deter you because the film is well worth owning and stands up to repeat screenings. Best of you can find it for under 10 bucks
