Film & TV on DVD - John Doe Film News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

John Doe’s 2010 Halloween Movie Marathon. What is on your list?

Dog Soldiers will start things right!

All hallows eve is upon us again this Sunday and John Doe is having a few friends around for his annual horror movie marathon to celebrate. Halloween has always been one of JD’s favourite traditions and he has fond memories of joining best buddies like Gingersnap and Bryn in Oz for a night of terror.

Moving to the USA however is a completely different world. The holiday is obsessively embraced and now the options for dragging others into a night of hellish nightmares is far more of an event.

Enthusiastic about this year’s program which was compiled by Johnny and his roommate JB, there is a cross section of classics, curios and modern day faves that will hopefully keep all the guests trembling with laughter and fear for the duration.

Bring it on Spoony!
Opening the 2010 schedule will be Dog Soldiers.

"Delivering gore, giggles and characters to cheer for, Dog Soldiers is not for the squeamish. It’s all about entertainment, don’t look for a deeper meaning just enjoy the ride."

JD has screened this one pretty much every year since its 2002 release and with a few visitors admitting they haven’t seen it before it’s an ideal candidate to get everyone in the blood and guts mood. halloween III, halloween 3, season of the witch, horror
The frustration of Halloween 3 may come off?
The second screening of the evening is a wild card. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a film that JD hasn’t seen in about 20 years and was never particularly enamored with. Due to its unusual place in the world of sequels, this non Michael Myers work was intended to launch a Halloween anthology series but the public rejected it with such verve that it failed to catch on. Now that enough time has passed to judge the film without comparison to what came before and after this could be an interesting excursion into “best intentions.”

The first 10 minutes of Halloween III: Season of the Witch

trick r treat, horror, poster, scary movies, anthology,
Trick R Treat, offers both.
No Halloween movie marathon would be complete without at least one anthology series. Creepshow is always the obvious answer for this position but Johnny decided to go with the instant cult classic, the highly appropriate Trick R Treat from 2007. As little demons rap upon our door with candy on their minds we will be viewing October 31st through warped eyes.

aftermath, horror, nacho pedra, spanish horror, dvd
Beware of the Aftermath!
Following the Trick R Treat collection this is where JD has decided to throw a pitchfork in the machine with the challenging and controversial 30 minute Spanish short Aftermath (1994). Sick, perverted and disturbing this little gem is sure to make some in audience very uncomfortable.

may, wallpaper, horror, carrie, lucky mckee, angela bettis, horror
The face of the misunderstood.
By this time in the evening we should all be ready to change the vibe from fun horror entertainment to the complexities of quirky emotional horror that come from Lucky McKee’s May.

"The film is driven along by deliberate editing, restrained cinematography and an eclectic soundtrack featuring the likes of The Breeders. Not to everyone’s taste, this under seen and largely ignored quirky future cult classic is an original and unique experience that will get under your skin and haunt you."

Very much a modern reinvention of Carrie, its not the suspense of carnage that achieves squirming goals, it’s that we truly care for the plight of the confused and disconnected central character. To read Mr Doe’s full review of May please click HERE.

Trailer for May

evil dead 2, sam raimi, bruce campbell, ash, horror, comedy
Give Ash some sugar baby.
Needing some relief after the trials of Lucky McKee’s dark, awkward tale, we will be closing the festival with a bonafide, mindless laughfest in the form of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2. Attendees will all be a little sleepy by this late hour, hopefully drunken and toasted too so anything more demanding would probably be a waste of effort. The adventures of Ash and his evil hand should be an ideal finale in the early hours of the morning.

A few runners up that may get screened if we have time include: Into The Mouth of Madness, Peeping Tom, House of the Devil, Experiment in Terror and Audition.

So there you have it, possibly the first marathon JD has organized that will not include any black and white classics (eg: Cat People, Carnival of Souls).

So the only thing left to do now is ask you readers, ‘What’s films are on your own programs for this Halloween?”

Dear John--

I've nearly wrapped up a monumental (for me) multi-installment retrospective of my favorite fright films, a few of which are included on your list. I haven't given much thought to hosting a movie marathon of my own on all hallows eve--I don't know how much sitting my butt can endure.

Love your selections, at least those I've seen. With the exception of Halloween III. Sorry.

Best holiday wishes!

Alex

You know , I'm not even sure what date Halloween is on, but I'm sure I can rustle up something......revisiting the Exorcist might be in order - havn't seen that in a few years. Then again I could just have a back to back Halloween I and II special.....should be fun. Enjoy your movie marathon!

Shaun, dude, it's October 31st, this coming Sunday.

JD, nice work mate. Wish I was there. You'll need to pace yourself, that's quite some marathon. Do you have espresso at hand? Or anything else?

Although Halloween III's poster is one of my favourite horror poster art, the movie is terrible. Truly dreadful. But a small part of the problem is the MPAA cut most of the good stuff out before it was released. Bastards. It's not as bad as some of the other sequels that followed ... but only just.

I just can't get myself to watch these movies, any horror movies for that matter.

How about the top light and fluffy movies? Are there such movies?

I could even help with the research on that one.

The original Swiss Family Robinson? Original Yours, Mine and Ours? Parent Trap?

Great line-up JD, and I'd say perfect sequencing, although I haven't seen May or Aftermath. Dog Soldiers would be on my list for sure, although I was pinned down at a Halloween party so couldn't actually watch anything. American Werewolf would be another - anything that has a bit of a fun touch to it is a shoo-in.

JD,
what a selection! Man I wish I had been States side and there with you!

I will now have to hunt out those films, never heard of some of them.

I think I would go for an evening of the original old classics;
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,
Monster from the Black Lagoon,
The Blob (original of course),
Count Yorga Vampire,
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original),
The Innocents (that would make an interesting remake, it scared the britches off me as a kid when I saw it on TV),
and one I'd love to see, Two Thousand Maniacs!

Sorry I missed the All Hallows Day, maybe next year...

cheers

Hi Alex,

Had a quick browse over your posts but will go back and comment soon. Seems the same style of horrors stand out for us both.

Seeing Halloween 3 for the first time in 20 odd years, I agree that it is a let down even without looking from a Myers perspective. Cool ending though, but downright silly for the most part.

Thanks for the visit.

Hi Shaun,

So did you do anything in the end for Halloween?
9. November 11th 2010 @ 22:01. JohnDoe Says:
All went better than planned Bryn,

A buddy lent us a projector screen so we saw them all in appropriate cinematic scale.

Halloween III was not as bad as I remembered (which was lower than garbage) but agree totally with your assessment. - Damn catchy tune though

Hi Kenna,

Fluff frivolity wouldn't really fit in with Halloween. But I do occasionally glean pleasure from empty vessel's like the live action Disney classics. the Incredible Mr Limpet, Cat From Outer Space, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes being a few faves.

I have a hard time digesting syrup and surrendering to its artificial taste, but sooner or later I may assemble a list of those that make me smile (The Princess Bride) instead of cringe in fear (Sound of Music).

Thanks for dropping in.

Hi Matt,

The ordering of the program worked out well. very hard to shortlist for an event like this. So much gold. Probably would have been a slightly alternate selection if I was aware we would have a 20 foot screen in the living room. (Eg: Carpenter's The Thing and American Werewolf certainly)

12. November 11th 2010 @ 22:16. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Fog,

I avoided classics this year not by design. Cat people made the cut the last year I was in Oz. I did end up watching Don Siegel's Invasion of The Body Snatchers a few days later for the first time on the bigscreen.

The Innocents is arguably the best ghost story ever....creepy stuff. McQueen in the Blob is always a nostalgic treat.

Weird that over here Halloween is huge but in Australia only a few people even cared when I had a movie marathon every October 31st.
13. November 11th 2010 @ 22:23. Bryn Says:
I wanna do a movie marathon!!!
14. November 11th 2010 @ 23:21. JohnDoe Says:
Do it Bryn, sure it would be an event that I would regret missing.

I am pondering having a Christmas Eve marathon at the moment.
Bad Santa, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Nightmare Before Christmas, A Christmas Story, Richard Donner's Santa Clause: The Movie, Muppet Christmas Carol, all in contention.
15. November 12th 2010 @ 00:23. Bryn Says:
Noice. And you'll need to see Rare Exports too.
16. November 28th 2010 @ 22:31. JohnDoe Says:
That I do.
