Film & TV on DVD - John Doe Film News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Sylar as Spock, it's logical?

Unnerving as the head slicing, mentally unstable force of evil who just wants to know “How does that work?’. Actor Zachary Quinto plays the villainous Sylar on NBC’s hit TV show Heroes. Increasing his profile beyond that of Adam Kaufman, the recurring character he played on 24, the recognizable face has now turned his attentions to pursuing a new role.

According to trekmovie.com the mamma’s boy bad guy has his sites on slipping into the pointy ears of Vulcan icon Mr Spock in Writer/Director JJ Abraham’s upcoming Star Trek XI movie.

Quizzed by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette the mind melding apprentice said,
"I missed the ‘Superman Returns’ boat, so I’m angling for ‘Star Trek.’ People are constantly telling me I bear some resemblance to Leonard Nimoy."

Co starring alongside Abrahams regular Greg Grunberg (Lost, Alias) who plays the psychic detective Matt Parkman on the super powered serial, Zachary went on, with tongue in cheek to say,
"Maybe Sylar should tell Greg, ‘I promise I won’t kill you if you get me an audition,’ …We’ll see what happens."

Still in pre-production with no official casting news yet, the next instalment of the Star Trek cinema franchise is an original series origins story, tracing the early years of Enterprise crew members Kirk, Scotty, Bones and Spock.

John Doe did an earlier post on casting for film, but failed to take this man into consideration. Still strictly a rumour, it’s an entertaining speculation. The photoshopped image above proves Zachary Quinto bares a physical resemblance to the emotional vacuum Vulcan. His often deadpan portrayal on Heroes alludes to intelligence and lends further suitable credibility.

Star Trek Spock
Spock as he was...living long and prospering

With all sorts of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck rumours orbiting the project it’s nice to hear a more positive gossip point, though making yet another Star Trek film does seem redundant.

What do you think of Sylar as Spock?

JohnD,

personally I rthink he should stick to his silent acting angst and leave the ears on the shelf...

Who else could ever protray Spock but Leoanrd Nimoy anyway?

Which begs an even more imortant question...Why are they making yet another Trek movie anyway?

Great read...

Take care,

Nick

I don't think there's anyone more suited to this Spock role than "Sylar"!

Genius!

7,

Another prequel? When is the prequel to Rocky, 'The Early Life of Balboa' due to go into production?

Hi Nick,

No idea why they are making another Trek movie, especially one by such a generic TV writer.

I really only posted this one because I'm a huge Heroes fan and the photoshopped picture made me do a double take.

Leonard Nimoy is like Connery is to Bond, irreplaceable. With that said it is eerie how similar Zachary is to Nimoy.

Hi David,

I'm a bit of a sucker for origins stories in comic books, but on film they can be very tedious.

I didn't even know they were thinking of doing a Rocky the early years...besides I thought it was already made with Paul Newman in the 1960's under the name Somebody Up There Likes Me.. Directed by Robert Wise, this is my favourite boxing film.

Heroes, eh? Haven't seen it... is it worth watching?

I think Zachary Quinto as Spock would be rather inspired casting. He has an intensity that would suit the role perfectly.

Cibby, I will eventually write that 'Why you should watch Heroes' post for you
