Idiocracy (2006) - Trailer Included
Idiocracy
Coming Soon to DVD - Apologies JD received a promo disc for this but can not find the specific release date anywhere.
Writer/Director:Mike Judge
Starring:Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Justin Long, Dax Shepard
“The years passed, mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. Some had high hopes the genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources where focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.” - Narrator
Delayed for years because of confusion about marketing, Idiocracy is Fight Club for the Jerry Springer set, if they don’t head butt their TV’s first.
“There was a time when reading wasn't just for fags. And neither was writing. People wrote books and movies. Movies with stories, that made you care about whose ass it was and why it was farting. And I believe that time can come again!” - Joe
Opening with some truths about the world we live in, Darwinism has failed because man has no natural predators. Those with a low IQ are breeding like rabbits (This explains why Britney Spears sells so many albums and why the masses flock to remakes and sequels.) While those possessing an education or a hint of intelligence, are waiting longer and longer to pop one out.
“Unfortunately, Trevor passed away from a heart attack while masturbating to produce sperm for artificial insemination. But I had some eggs frozen, so just as soon as the right guy comes along...” – Carol
In 2005 where mediocrity is hailed as genius, Private Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) and Rita the prostitute (Maya Rudolph) are selected for a government experiment because of their mundane existences.
“Why me? Every time Metsler says, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way," I get out of the way.” - Joe
Intended to be cryogenically frozen for a 5 year hibernation, instead the reluctant walking vacuum heads awaken 500 years later in the 25th century. Following current trends, society has devolved, dumbed-down to the point where the fairy floss brained Joe is now the smartest living human.
“Right, kick ass. Well, don't want to sound like a dick or nothin', but, ah... it says on your chart that you're fucked up. Ah, you talk like a fag, and your shit's all retarded. What I'd do, is just like... like... you know, like, you know what I mean, like...” - Doctor
Circumstances conspire to force him into the responsibility of government where he must solve problems like world hunger, economic depression and a culture that makes fun of intelligence. A species that rewards stupidity, worships empty hedonistic celebrity and must finally acknowledge education is important and taking pride in your work is not a suckers game.
“I can't believe you like money too. We should hang out.” - Frito
John Doe says
The creator of Beavis and Butt Head and King of Hill, Mike Judge insults his target audience of Frat boy comedy fans, delivering a swift kick to the groin of morons everywhere.
This is a comedy with the best intentions, reflecting the end game to the current fads of generational laziness. Observing an era that communicates through slang punctuated with violence to emulate under educated white trash role models.
There are some sincerely uproarious scenes, but the concept is explored in a hit & miss way, starting on a high but seldom reaching it again. There is a sketch show quality to the episodic screenplay that reminds, the material would have worked better on TV.
Luke Wilson (Royal Tenanbaums, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket) brings a dopey with ethics approach to his part that succeeds. Ex SNL star Maya Rudolph does little with her under written part.
Animated voice dude Dax Shepard (Robot Chicken, King of The Hill) is committed as Frito, the imbecile who knows the location for a time machine. Justin Long (The geek in Galaxy Quest) amuses as a soft filled doctor.
John Doe enjoyed Idiocracy despite its faults dwelling in the land of low brow laughs which seldom satisfy. A cult for the film is inevitable, even if it did not achieving the heights that may well have come from more incisive gags the subject matter inspires a superior chuckle to most in this low demands genre.
Idiocracy is light entertainment that will astound or enrage the dim witted and for those who see the sad truth will improve proportionally to the amount of whacky weed consumed while viewing.

Thanks for the ego boost provided by your appreciation for my writing...was having one of those times where i feel I'm stagnating, getting bland.
Always great to hear from you, things are going well. Deadlines, previews and research, life is fun.
Hope yours is the same.
Did make me giggle in a few places - but does not stand up to a repeat viewing for me

From what I read in a Playboy interview with Judge awhile back, he was taken aback that Beavis and Butthead had been embraced by the very group he was ridiculing.
Perhaps this is a second attempt? I'll bet it's embraced yet again by the same group Judge ridicules.
Kind of frustrating and funny at the same time...
Great review as always, JD.

I saw Idiocracy a while ago. And then once more... a while ago.
It's very stupid, literally, and one of the most hilarious stuff lately to be released. I don't compare it with Dumb Dumber by any means, but I think it succeeded to carch some of the feel that worked for that one.
A lot of truths in it too =)
Cheers,

It looks like I'd get a giggle out of it. But then I really enjoyed flicks like Dude Where's My Car and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle......my tastes are decidedly lowbrow at times!!! Sad, but true.

I wanted to love this movie... saw it in the theater but it received adumbas reward from me. That is 2 hours of my life that I can never get back. Luke Wilson is one of my favorites and I love quirky movies. Did not realize that it was coming out on DVD. Thanks for the warning...

Hi D,
It does take aim at its target audience, but with varied accuracy.
Hi Peeker,
I can't stand Dumb and Dumber, I usually hate this type of film. Idiocracy was better than the norm, still full of faults but i just love the philosophy.
Hi KylieW,
You will probably enjoy this if your a Dude wheres my car sort, though I couldn't stand those films i do have a weakness for low brow too. (Kentucky Fried Movie, Amazon Women on The Moon, Flying High etc)

Glad you dug the review, keep expectations low and this should satisfy on a basic level.
Hi Miswanderlust,
I usually hate this type of film, but the basic foundations for the laughs appeals to my sensabilities. Its no masterpiece though and I understand why you didn't like its obvious comedy.
I only like Luke Wilson in Wes Anderson films really, but he far more talented than Owen.
Hunt Famous
Orble Post of the Day
Fat Cult
Techbreak
And I think the premise is something that we're already seeing on some level.

Totally agree that the whole thing reeks of truth in specualting where we are heading a race...2 or 3 generations from now the western world is going to be very different.
The dumbing down of society is self evident on every street corner and news stand. The education system (snicker) needs a complete over haul, instead of lowering standards.
I better stop there before i begin a diatribe I have sprouting for years...

I dropped by your own site and read the review. Nicely done and I share your fears for the species.
That opening 15 minutes was a bulls eye accurate social commentary.
