Snow, Ice and Assimilation…or Nature versus the Nurtured.
John Doe Immigrates to the U.S.A – Part 2 (Into the Wild)
First a few of John Doe’s thoughts on the nature of civilized man:
In the urban jungle the primary predatory animal is Homosapien. Danger lurks in the shadows of alley-ways; menace permeates from the bowels of a pack mentality. Dominating the concrete terrain, we humanoids have been conditioned to take technology and public services for granted.
Survival, in its primal form has evaporated. Electricity, running water and an avalanche of other devices designed to lighten the burdens of endurance have eroded instinctual purposes.
The Call of the Wild, a jail break drive to escape the shackles of a perpetually corrupting social system, to reconnect with the essence of life’s simplicity, many have answered the Jeremiah Johnson siren song…Now, so has John Doe.
Ascending into the forested heart of the Green Mountains in Vermont, populated by a menagerie of bear, coyotes, wild cats, moose, deer and squirrel, JD was acutely aware of faunal and floral differences to Australia.
Settling in a location that teeters on the edge of civilization, relegated third on the food chain at the mercy of the weather, road conditions and woods packed with sharp teeth. The omnipresent power to unleash ice storms threatens the supply of electricity and telecommunications.
Temperatures plummet, white outs and blizzards cripple road transport. Every trip to the general store becomes a Die Hard situation; we are hostages Under Siege by white powder.
Ice accumulates upon the roof and must be smashed before it tears from its foundation. Snow is shoveled, driveways ploughed. Faulty plumbing and sub zero temperatures potentially explode pipes..After 3 days and no showers, the aroma rivals anything that Richard Gere extricated from his urban myth of a sphincter back in the 80’s.
These alien extremities present challenges that command equally foreign solutions. Guns are a tool, giant 4WD trucks a necessity. The daily routine incorporates regular weather checks and relentless awareness of surroundings.
The pioneering spirit reminiscent of the old western frontiers, a do-it-yourself attitude is de rigueur here. Johnny D is a man who has a past of failures in physical labour, hence the choice of penman as a career. Outside of any comfort zone he has begun to evolve as an adult searching for independence and wisdom through the essence of inner strength.
Forced to shoulder responsibilities carrying the price of survival, aiding those in need and donating resources or time to achieve goals. Confronting, combating and overcoming ageless obstacles. Guns, big trucks and a sense of community exist in harmony.
A lifestyle choice that still astonishes the once citified JD, the spirit is fed and the mind blossoming, this is a new chapter in his adventure of existence.

It's not for lack of trying to put on weight that my winter coat hasn't come through. I
have been eating American sized meals with lots of red meat...though Bufallo Wings it turns out are my kryptonite. The hotter the better, the ones you bite into and they bite back.

It feels very real up here and I have always had a problem seeing reality. It amazing fun learning to adapt to cultural and natural back flips. Nothing is familiar but you pick it up mighty quick!
I'm hoping to return to my old ways with the blog and churn out the reviews. Just depends on those natural and cultural factors allowing me....you have no idea what we had to go through to get online
Cool hearing from you. Hope your life is full of wonder and amusement too.

I am envious. Your words took me back to when I lived in the Australian Alps (1995 ~2002), before we moved to Qld. I would never have left the sub zero temperatures, burst water pipes and resourcefulness fixes of those days, if I had the choice... but I didnt, as No 1 daugher with CP was to die if we didnt move to warmer climes... which I detest btw... but *sigh* I can remember well ... and this piece of yours was so marvelous at helping me recount all those beautiful details...
hahahahaha *dreamy look on face* .. we used to use our DodgeZilla to go into the forest to chop (chainsaw) wood each Sunday. The chainsaw more useful than a gun, mind you, I doubt the Aussie Drop Bear would have put up such a grizzly prospect *lol* .. it was the Funnel webs you had to watch for.
Gosh, enjoy it.

It seems you can relate...I too HATE the heat. Can always put on another jumper if your chilly, can't peel off your skin when its too hot.
It's the complete silence that I find hard to get used too. There is no noise at all most of the time. Peace is unsettling.....then there is the Americans
It's reassuring that you can appreciate the cool time we are having getting used to it all.
