March 2008 - DVD Releases Coming Soon
Australian DVD releases for March 2008
Disclaimer: John doe used to do a regular coming soon section each month specifically geared towards Australian audiences. Over the last few months an increased external work load has taken its toll but now in an effort to get back on track here is the return of the JDM Coming Soon section.
As always this is not a comprehensive guide to everything available this month, just a selection of titles that tempt John Doe to part with his cash.
March 3rd
Howard The Duck
The critically crucified George Lucas production about a vice riddled duck from an alternate universe has JD curious to revisit after enjoying it as a kid in 1986, could it really be that bad. Probably.
My Favourite Martian (1963) - Complete Series 1 (6 Disc Box Set)
Finally we get the alien comedy that was doing the “Third Rock” shuffle long before we had even found the “First Rock”.
March 5th
Galactica 1980 (2 Disc Set) and Mission Galactica - The Cylon AttackFor fans of the new BSG the movie Mission Galactica is worthwhile viewing just to see the alternate adventures of Cain (Llyod Bridges) and the Pegasus. Galactica 1980 is the continuation of the original series where flying bikes and Starbuck and Apollo look-a-likes take over when they reach a planet known as Earth.
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
The Director of Chopper has had to go through hell for years to finally get a release for his sweeping Terrence Malick style western…it was worth the wait.
Breach
Not quite as good as it could have been, this is still a well handled thriller that refuses to follow Hollywood formula and thanks to Chris Cooper’s brilliant portrayal of a duplicitous agent offers a unique entry in the espionage genre. (Even if it does have Ryan Phillipe)
Serenity - 2 Disc Ultimate Edition (2 Disc Set)
Same movie plus 170 minutes of extra features, some from the existing release and a few new goodies.
Scarface Platinum Edition (2 Disc Set)
Sure it’s a great movie but if like me you already purchased the previous to local releases the announcement of a new edition is just annoying.
March 6th
Taxi (1978) - The Complete 1st SeasonBrilliant classic comedy that introduced surreal comic Andy Kaufman as Latka, launched Danny De Vito’s career and stands as the only worthwhile project Tony Danza was ever attached to. The crazy antics of Christopher Lloyd also sent him towards the Doc in back to the Future.
Family Ties - The 1st Season (4 Disc Set)
Happy Days - The 2nd Season (4 Disc Set)
Laverne & Shirley - The 1st Season (3 Disc Set)
Mork & Mindy - The 2nd Season (4 Disc Set)
Shine - Deluxe Collector's Edition (2 Disc Set)
March 12th
30 Days Of Night - Limited Edition (2 Disc Set) and 30 Days Of Night: Blood Trails - Special EditionIn the world of modern vampire films and comic book inspired movies this is a valiant effort. Sure it has it’s problems but overall any fan of the genre should get a kick out of the blood letting fun.
Elizabeth - The Golden Age
Dr Plonk (Palace Films Collection)
March 13th
Death Proof (Quentin Tarantino's) - Extended Version: Special ... - Read John Doe's Review by clicking the title.Planet Terror (Robert Rodriguez's) - Extended Version: Special...
The Grindhouse has arrived, without the bridging trailers. Still these extended editions provide Schlock value that is seldom seen today.
March 19th
Eastern PromisesDavid Cronenberg’s latest foray into more commercially acceptable material manages to balance his usual quirks and introspection without obsessing on the flesh.
Across The Universe (2 Disc Set)
Set to the music of the Beatles visual stylist Julie Taymor tells of “love” and “me do”.
Gabriel
Our own Yoda worked on this one and though Johnny hasn’t seen it yet this breakout Australian production looks like it may warrant a screening.
Michael Clayton - Read John Doe's review by clicking title
Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition
“Always look on the bright side of life”. After the dismal local release of a single disc edition with a dodgy transfer this “Comedy Holy Grail” is most welcome.
Rescue Dawn
Werner Herzog team up with Steve Zahn and Christian Bale for a war story of desperate escape and gritty survival.
March 20th
Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones, The - Vol. 2: The War Years...When JD was a kid these early years adventures were one of the few spin offs that satisfied, wether they hold up now has him curious enough to revisit Sean Patrick Flannery’s portrayal of the intrepid archaeologist.
Oz - Season 4 (6 Disc Set)
Thank god. After waiting over a decade for them to arrive the sooner the rest of this supreme prison drama gets released the better. Addictive television seems like an understatement.
March 27th
Into The WildSean Penn’s latest opus met with mixed interpretations from critics but fed J Doe’s soul. Brilliantly shot and acted this is an experience for those who still search for a rite of passage.

Considering Toshiba just finished negotiations with Sony to enter the blu-ray market I would say yes. Also the confidence of knowing that Blu-ray has won the battle should open the doorway to a much more diverse product range on the format. At least thats what I Hope.
Thanks for visiting
Have to see that again.

I saw Howard the Duck at the movies when it was first released and remember laughing as a 10 year old...the bad press since just has me curious to know how terrible it could be.
Were you a young'un when it came out?

If you haven't already read it you can find my Deathproof review HERE.
It's good fun but not for everyone, Planet Terror is a good buzz too.
