Vincent Chase is Pablo Escobar

Medellin, is the big screen adaptation of the Pablo Escobar story. A real life crime lord, Escobar (Vincent Chase) was once the biggest drug dealer alive, considered one of the globes 10 wealthiest men.
Heading a ruthless cocaine cartel he was a ferocious negotiator who used violence to get his way for business and pleasure. Surrounding himself with beautiful women, heavy artillery and mountains of the white powder the film looks like a cross between Scarface and City of God.
Writer/Director Billy Walsh announced himself with his gritty debut feature Queens Boulevard, praised as a Mean Streets calibre tour de force of crime and punishment at Sundance.
The head strong Director has a reputation for arrogant genius and this subject seems to mirror some of his own inner demons and control issues. Already an indie legend, Medellin could be a masterpiece, problem is that the Director has commandeered the film and refuses to screen it till he is satisfied its perfect. This only increases the mystique behind the project that has been cloaked in rumours since it began shooting. (Oscar Winning writer Paul Haggis was reportedly paid 250,000 dollars, just to proof read the script that was constantly being re written)
Before he became an overnight sensation in James Cameron’s Aquaman and took up pages of gossip magazines for his affair with Mandy Moore, Medellin star Vincent Chase was the lead in Walsh’s Queens Boulevard. A performance he considers the best of his career.
A lot has changed since then for the young actor who now serves as a financial and creative Producer of the project beside his manager Eric Murphy. From the trailer it’s easy to see Chase has nailed the accent and mannerisms of the notorious Escobar. An interview on medellinthefilm.com makes it clear that this was a historical figure he was determined to capture.
Q: What about this project made you want to put your own money into it and risk everything?
“This is a movie I wanted to make for years and it became evident that the only way to make it happen was to do it myself. In my career I always go after the things I want, even though my agent thinks I'm crazy, my lawyers think I'm crazy, my manager thinks I'm crazy, and most of my family thinks I'm crazy. But, you only live once and have to do things that you believe in. I feel we have a movie here that is special.”
Vincent’s Brother Johnny “Drama” Chase (Viking Quest) also plays a small role.
Plagued by delays, finally news comes that this long awaited tale of blood and drugs has been accepted into competition at Cannes. The trailer below has to excite the money men in Hollywood and picking up distribution seems guaranteed, so we may just be lucky enough to have a big screen release here in Oz.
In typical fashion for the city that recycles more than just plastic, Writer/Director Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin Aces) is also planning to make Killing Pablo, a film about the life and times of the same dude.

Enjoy the cool as Goodfellas trailer and picture it on a 200 ft projector screen.
