November Film & DVD Releases
Region 4 DVD’s: November 2006
This is a list of some DVD’s being released in Australia this month.
NB* This is not a list of everything coming out. Just the DVD’s I’m tempted by.
November 1st
Blade Runner Directors Cut (re-release)(Sci Fi)
Director Ridley Scott’s (The Duellists, Alien)alternate studio version makes a last ditch effort to sell before next years definitive 3 Disc edition. The as yet unseen official Directors cut will also screen at cinemas in the next 6 months.
Family Guy Season 5(TV Comedy)
Stewie and the gang continue to offend some and amuse many with this, arguably the best season yet.
November 5
Essential Almodovar Box Set Volume 2-Foreign/Comedy/Drama
(Includes Law of Desire, Kika and Flower of my Secret) - fans of the Director rejoice, these hard to find rarities are finally in Oz.
November 8
Double Indemnity (1944)(Noir)
I and many others consider this one of the finest noirs ever made. Director Billy Wilder shows why he was one of the greats and the story has never been told better.
Pusher (1996)(Thriller)
First part in the Danish Pusher trilogy, about a drug pusher who ends up in a bloody vendetta and when I say bloody I mean not for the light-hearted. Its all backed up by a powerful script, some fine acting and enthusiastic direction.
Rashomon (Foreign Thriller)
Telling of the story of a murder from several different POVs, Director Akira Kurosawa’s ludicrously influential work comes down under at last on DVD.
Sin City (recut)
Those who haven’t already got the U.S edition should rush out and pre order their copy of this uncut and extended version.
Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)
- Got this on DVD from the US a while ago, will put a review up soon for this textured western tale. Tommy Lee Jones powerful directorial debut is reminiscent of Sam Peckinpah’s Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and makes for high quality filmmaking.
November 15
Wah-Wah
Semi Autobiographical story of Richard E Grant (Withnail and I) stars the always quality Gabriel Byrne
November 22
The Woods (2006)
Those who have read my review of Director Lucky McKee’s disturbing horror May, know I’m a fan. I have been waiting patiently for the Director’s second effort. It didn’t get a cinema release here and I haven’t managed to see it yet, but with Bruce Campbell (Bubba Ho Tep, Maniac Cop, Evil Dead) in it, that makes it worth a rental alone.
Ice Age 2: Meltdown (2006)
More of the same in this sequel, which is a good thing.
Buddy Holly Story (1978)(Rockbio)
Possibly the best rock bio film ever, certainly an astounding performance from young and dedicated Gary Busey
November 29
My Name Is Earl: Season 1(TV Comedy)
The funniest show on TV since Arrested Development was cancelled. Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee are a comedy duo for the ages. I got my copy from the US a few months ago and I hope the Oz version has the alternate pilot episode where instead of Carson Daily; Earl follows the advice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy.
November 30
Mission Impossible: Season 1(TV Thriller)
Forget the crappy Tom Cruise films, this is what Mission Impossible is about. Leonard Nimoy and Peter Graves head up the team of espionage experts who achieve the ‘no way they will make it” operations. Intelligent and highly distracting you wont be able to stop at just one.
The Libertine
Underseen Johnny Depp gem that tells of the Earl of Rochester, a feisty man to give the Marquise De sade a run for his money. Depp goes decadent like few can.
In Cinemas: November 2006
November 2nd
Flags of our Fathers
Has the potential to be an epic war story, hopefully it wont turn into a sentimental flag waving episode ala Private Ryan.
Nightmare before Xmas (3D)
Henry Selick’s (James and The Giant Peach) classic is re-released in 3D, guaranteed to be a visceral experience on the big screen.
Who Killed the Electric Car
Read John Doe’s review here
November 9
Shortbus
From the Director of Hedwig and The Angry Inch this promises to be risqué and heartfelt cinema at its most unique.
November 16
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
I saw this fantastic early Scorsese style film starring Robert Downey Jnr for FilmInk and will put the review up once the next issue is out.
Killshot
Based on Elmore Leonards story (Jackie Brown, Out of Sight etc) Mickey Rourke (Angel Heart, Sin City) stars as a hitman for hire and Joseph Gordon Levitt (Mysterious Skin, Brick) is his insane young protégé.
The Prestige
Magic is the order of the day in Director Christopher Nolan’s (Memento, Following, Batman Begins)
latest, which sees Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) face off against Robert Angier played by Hugh Jackman
Road To Guantanamo
An unmissable documentary I got to see at the Sydney Film Festival. Shows the story of the Tipton three, British Muslims captured by the U.S.A in the middle east and without trial or conviction jailed in Guantanamo Bay as terrorists for over two years. Again I will do a full review of this closer to the release date.
November 23rd
Art School Confidential
Latest from Director Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World, Bad Santa)It is what it sounds like, a comedy that takes place in an art school and laughs at the foibles of eccentrics in a loving way.
The Black Dalhia
Director Brian De Palma’s (Scarface, Dressed To Kill, Carrie, Untouchables)latest is a salute to noir and looks like it is full of fun plot twists, sexy dames and tough as nails anti heroes.
The Descent
Got this on DVD about a year ago from the UK, no idea why its taken so long to get here. It’s a top notch horror from Director Neil Marshal, (Dog Soldiers) that is about a group of girls on a spelunking expedition from hell. So good its already had a pair of pathetic remakes as The Cave and The Cavern. Full review around release date
November 30th
A Scanner Darkly
See my Coming soon list for September, when this was originally meant to be released. Pissed off we have had to wait years to see this potential sci fi great. Loved Waking Life and Richard Linklater (daze and Confused, Before Sunrise, Slacker) employs the same method of animation to tell Phillip K Dick’s complex story.
Pan’s Labyrinth
The trailer for this Fantasy/Horror makes me believe we may be in for the most imaginative adventure this side of Labyrinth. Dark and foreboding Director Guilmerro Del Torro (Cronos, Devils Backbone) does his best work in his home country and this promises to be a return to form after the disappointing Blade II and Hellboy.
What are you looking forward to seeing this month?

Piss, bugger, bum, dick, cock, fart!!!!!!
It is no wonder that people download films, sure they release the latest piece of shit like Tomb Raider 7 on time, but the better the film the more the wait.
I think I may do a blog on this subject....I mean we waited 2 and half years for Donnie Darko.......Narc and Dog Soldiers took a year.............The Descent was remade twice in the time it takes to get here......
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
