“This is the stupidest group of people I've ever worked with who are not legally retarded.” Lieutenant Dangle
In a bizarre twist on the normal order of film to TV hierarchy, the successful Comedy Central program Reno 911 gets a big screen feature film, while it’s on hiatus.
“I became a police officer because my doctor told me I needed to get out of the house more”.- Deputy Wiegel
First question is why didn’t they pull this hijinx with the Sopranos or even better Deadwood? Second, could this be the start of a trend for cable shows to end up in cinemas? Doubt it, but then again there is always Serenity to bolster the idea.
Beginning life as a 20 odd minute sketch show, Reno 911 is a parody of the reality TV show “Cops”, which in turn plays as a satire of real life to begin with. The difference is on “Cops” it was the civilians who were armed with an IQ lower than Anna Nicole Smith’s.
“Reno is a lot like Mayberry on the TV except that everyone's on crystal meth and prostitution's legal.” – Deputy Travis
Crude, rude and obscene, in the Reno Cop Shop it’s the law enforcement officers who are substance abusing, skank chasing felons with badges. Desperate for attention, constantly needing direction, it’s as if Frank Dreban and The Police Squad team became a reality show.
In the movie this useless crew of miscreants is invited to a National Police Convention to be held in Miami Beach Florida. Incompetent blundering means the squad are treated by city officials with all the respect they deserve, none.
It isnt long before a bioterrorsit threat emerges and the guys and gals from Reno are the city's only hope for salvation.
“This hotel reminds me of a place you'd want to go to get a good ol' fashioned raping or a down-home murder!” – Deputy Wiegel
John Doe says:
At times hilarious, others gross and often no doubt offensive, the antics of the committed cast of characters and low rent camera work are what sell this straight faced gag fest.
Did it need a bigscreen release, not really. The movie doesn't seem any edgier, racier or larger in scale than the ordinary episodes.
Shot and cut using all the same techniques you see on Television, the movie extends the format to 85 minutes. The added length means that the pacing and comedic beats of the script sometimes lag and not all of the jokes leave you grabbing your guts in hysterical fits.
This doesn’t mean that the humour is lost, there are still plenty of outrageous and uncomfortable moments that evoke nervous giggles and some laugh out loud scenes too.
The players have all worked together for 4 seasons of the show and they know their roles instinctively. Performing with a serious focus on natural improv, while the dialogue and situations around them spiral into lunacy. It’s often what they don’t do and don’t say that adds the extra dimension to the thread bare plots of both the series and this film.
John Doe writes this review being a regular viewer of the show on Foxtel in Australia. This infantile and stupid brand of comedy does not generally cater to his sensibilities, but he finds something fun about observing inadequate authority figures in a mock real world setting.
If you’re a fan of the original then your guaranteed a few chuckles, if you a first timer you don’t need a frame of reference to know from the trailer if its your thing or not.
John Doe was lucky enough to receive a preview screening invite for this upcoming release from the nice people at Paramount Pictures, so thank you Paramount.
He didn’t know it at the time but the indelable Tracy from Movies and Life was there too. Click HERE to read her review for the film.

Thank-you for the mention, I'm flattered.
As I said on my post I wondered if you were there and I saw someone that I thought looked a bit like you, but I wasn't sure, especially as it was dark (fairly normal for a cinema). But now I know it was you.....he he. I really should've gone with my wild thought of asking if 'there was a John Doe in the house?'....but I didn't...ah well.
