Richard Jeni commits Suicide
Richard Jeni R.I.P
John Doe realises that he has been posting features alot this week. He was going to post a review today, but this tribute takes precedent.
"My mother never saw the irony of calling me a son of a bitch." – Richard Jeni
Admired by other comedians, under appreciated by the public, most Australian readers probably won’t know who Richard Jeni is.
John Doe thanks the priceless technology of Cable television, the same way the boy in the bubble thanked his plastic tent for keeping him alive. Without Foxtel JD wouldn’t have seen Jeni’s hilarious stand up show “A Big Steaming Pile of Me”.
Richard Jeni was mainly recognised for his successful stand up work, but along the way also appeared in The Mask with Jim carrey and recently in the TV show Everybody Hates Chris alongside Chris Rock.
Today comes the heart breaking news that the gifted comedian took his own life this week. The family have said he was diagnosed with clinical depression blended with psychotic paranoia and his illness was the reason for his death.
A tragic loss, Richard Jeni’s humour was always loaded, contained in a socially relevant context, scathingly observed and bluntly delivered in an off hand way. Often raging against the machine he had the ability to stimulate thought as well as laughter.
Talented and not afraid to speak his mind, his cynical intelligence and use of vocabluary aspired to greats like George Carlin, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks, which is exactly what Johnny looks for in comedy.
"You're basically killing each other to see who's got the better imaginary friend." - Richard Jeni on religion from his show.
So as a tribute and for some an introduction, below are just a few examples of what has been lost forever and thankfully also what we have been left with. Hope you enjoy them.
Richard Jeni, you will be missed.
If you only see one clip of Richard Jeni stand up please make it this one. Taking aim at the politics of the left wing, right wing and unaffiliated with equal devastation.
Jaws 4 the Richard Jeni way.
Richard Jeni: Observations on woman.

With great emotional highs, come staggering lows....
I think someone has to have issues to possess the ability to make me laugh.
