Robert Altman: Chauvel Screenings
Robert Altman: A Chauvel Tribute this weekend.
Attention fellow Cinephiles,
John Doe just received notice from the nice people at the Sydney Chauvel Cinema informing him of an exciting event this weekend.
Paying homage to the recently fallen cinema legend Robert Altman they are screening a selection of the Writer/Directors finest works.
JD did a retrospective look at this celluloid maverick and his films shortly after his passing. To read it please click HERE.
All the films chosen are fine examples of what he contributed to the silver screen. JD highly recommends the revisionist western McCabe and Mrs Miller, a film that demands a bigscreen.
Nashville is considered by many enthusiasts to be the ultimate Altman experience. Unavailable in Oz on DVD this is essential viewing for the uninitiated.
Short Cuts is highly amusing and paints a detailed tapestry of the city of Angels.
For those who have only seen the family friendly TV adaptation of M.A.S.H, Johnny suggests that this eye opening experience is groundbreaking comedy that is both real and political, in a way that cannot be repeated.
I hope that some of you will try to see at least one of these exceptional films that warrant attention and will delight and amaze, with an essence of life unique to their creator.
Here is a copy of the schedule lifted directly from the email.
Friday March 23 @ 6.30pm - SHORT CUTS
179mins, MA, 1993 Andie MacDowell, Julieanne Moore, Robert Downey Jnr
Whilst these LA residents go out to concerts, jazz clubs and even have their pools cleaned, they also lie, drink, and cheat. See how their lives intersect in this loosely-knitted collection of short stories.
Sat March 24 @ 1.30pm - GOSFORD PARK
137mins, M, 2001 Kristin Scott Thomas, Michael Gambon, Ryan Phillippe
Tea At Four. Dinner At Eight. Murder At Midnight. Set in the 1930’s, this is a complicated yet intriguing tale of secrets, lies, deceit, betrayal, revenge, bitterness, hatred, money and love.
Sat March 24 @ 4pm - M*A*S*H
116mins, M, 1972 Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt
The long running golden series started off with the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital holding base in the Korean war, where laughter is the best way to deal with the situation. Wartime life is bearable when practical jokes and revenge are the order of the day.
Sat March 24 @ 6pm – McCABE & MRS MILLER
120mins, 1971 Warren Beatty, Julie Christie
Name your poison and step inside the Old West’s new tavern/whorehouse, in this Oscar nominated film. The shrewd Mrs Miller, a professional madam, helps McCabe run his business, and together they face a battle as mining begins to take over the town.
Sun March 25 @ 2pm - A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
105mins, PG, 2006 Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, Garrison Keillor
Radio like you've never seen it before! A celebrity version of Garrison Keillor's radio show of the same name. Hilarious, colourful and full of music, you’ll want to live every show like it's your last. Backstage antics at their best.
Sun March 25 @ 4pm - NASHVILLE
159mins, 1975 David Arkin, Barbara Baxley, Jeff Goldblum
The Home of Country Music is also home to the reigning queen of Nashville who is close to collapse, plus a town of shaky marriages, tourists and other stories that come together in a dramatic climax. Wild. Wonderful. Sinful. Laughing. Explosive. Truly one of the best films ever made.

From a graphic designer like yourself that is high praise. have you seen any of the Directors work?
Your welcome Tracy,
Really hope you get to see at least one....any favourites?
You have my deepest sympathy Bryn,
If it makes you feel better, I probably wont be able to make it either.......the idea of McCabe and Mrs Miller , Nashville and Short Cuts on the bigscreen is blissful to me. The only Altman that tops them is The Long Goodbye.
