Steve McQueen - Unreleased Life Photos

A New Glimpse at the King of Cool

It’s not news that John Doe’s favourite movie star of all time is Steve McQueen. What is newsworthy is the collection of previously unreleased photographs circa 1963 that Life Magazine has just published in celebration of what would have been The Cooler King's 80th Birthday.

Captured by photographer John Dominos, these rare stills see Mcqueen at ease and at play, right on the cusp of super-stardom. By this time he had already starred in The Magnificent 7 and The Blob along with playing Bounty Hunter Josh Randall in the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive. 1963 would become the year that saw the future Virgil Hilts launch into mega stardom on the back of a Thunderbird Triumph in the P.O.W. classic The Great Escape.

In the Life article John Dominos explains how he earned the rugged stars trust:
"I liked the movies, but I didn't know who the stars were; I was not a movie buff," Dominis, now 88, tells LIFE.com. But he got the assignment because he and McQueen shared one vital passion point. "When I was living in Hong Kong I had a sports car and I raced it," Dominis says. "And I knew that Steve McQueen had a racing car. I rented one anticipating that we might do something with them. He was in a motorcycle race out in the desert, so I went out there in my car and met him, and I say, 'You wanna try my car?'" Later the two of them would zip around Los Angeles, including Sunset Boulevard (pictured). "We went pretty fast — I mean, as fast as you can safely go without getting arrested — and we'd ride and then stop and trade cars. He liked that, and I knew he liked it. I guess that was the first thing that softened him."

Born March 24th 1930 and driving on November 7th 1980, in his 50 years McQ became a Tough Guy Icon, raced Le Man and the BAJA 1000. Refused to yield to Hollywood’s demands, exploited his position and was generally bad-ass in his professional and personal escapades.

This is not the first time John Doe has put the spotlight on the rev-head star. You can read about a possible biopic HERE and also find out a little more about the legacy of this alpha male HERE..

Great post JD, except for the advert in the middle, promoting a gay Asian single site! hehe!! I don't think Steve would have approved somehow, or is there something I don't know?

How's the States going?

Thanks for sharing, McQueen had great talent, loved him in the movie with Natalie Wood -- can't think of the name of the movie, but he was adorable.

Hi Mountain Fog,

Google Adsense can be inappropriate in their selection of ads can't they?? Steve may have had something to say about it too, never was one to keep his mouth shut

States are going well, crazy country that i still have a lot to learn about.

Thanks for continuing to read despite my sporadic posting.

Hi Moonglow,

I see why he appealed to the ladies and I'm happy to have given you a taste.

Have you seen any of his films?
8. March 26th 2010 @ 16:41. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Kenna,

People tend to underestimate his talent sometimes I think, he was more than a one dimensional action hero. "Love With the Proper Stranger" starring Natalie Wood
is a great example. A softer more vulnerable Mcqueen comes through in this picture. Incidentally it was released in 1963, the same year as these LIFE photos were taken.

Here's a candid shot of McQueen and Wood that I have always thought revealed more of the people behind the image

I did see Bullit. I looked up how McQueen died. Mesothelioma (cancer caused by abstesos)...the same disease that took the great Merlin Oleson.

No wonder he was buff. I read he worked out 2 hours a day !!

Thanks for the title "Love with a Proper Stranger."

I remember when I first saw it on TCM, it looks so indie, but a brilliant movie -- even by today's standards.

McQueen played a jazz trumpet player -- he loved jazz.

Hi Simon,

It is so cool that these pictures are finally released to the public, adds extra dimension to a star long gone.

Thanks for visiting.

Bullitt is a great place to start Moonglow,

As for Mcqueen's physique, he was obsessed with making sure that the rugged, unbreakable man who appeared on screen resembled the real life actor.

It's interesting how a healthy body like those in the 50's looks so much more impressive than the steroid bulging deformities of today's body builders.

Hi Kenna,

Your welcome, "Love with the Proper Stranger" captured my attention to, such a different side of McQueen.

Naturally he loved the smooth, cool Jazz vibes

18. April 1st 2010 @ 16:04. JohnDoe Says:
Thanks Matt.

What's your favourite McQueen film?
19. April 7th 2010 @ 00:57. Matt Shea Says:
Ooh, good question. I'm a bigger fan of the actor than his actual films, but my pick would probably be The Getaway.
20. April 7th 2010 @ 00:58. Matt Shea Says:
Yours?
21. April 7th 2010 @ 01:49. Bryn Says:
I find the anecdote about Paul Newman and Steve butting heads over credit placement for The Towering Inferno amusing. It ended up with Steve's name first (left hand side of the poster), but Paul's name higher up (centre of the poster). They were the biggest names in Hollywood pretty much.

I think my fave McQueen would be Papillon.
22. April 7th 2010 @ 19:18. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Matt,

Both his Peckinpah films rank highly with me and The Getaway could well be #1 on my list certain days.

I still think his best performance was in Papillon but my favourite is always going to be Bullitt.
23. April 7th 2010 @ 19:23. JohnDoe Says:
He was a competitive man Bryn,

Steve used Paul as a measuring stick for success most of his career. Agreed it is amusing too.

Papillon is Mcqueens best performance for sure.

Great pics, I'm fan of of McQueen too. Casual look but always elegant. I can't stand today's new stars - there are so slobish. For example, "Twilight" actors dress up like homeless kids, sad!

Anyhow, McQueen was competitive with Newman because he was an extra in Newman's "Somebody Up There Likes Me," a role McQueen wanted for himself. It made Newman an instant star - jealousy is a terrible thing/sin.

Personally, I loved McQueen in The Cincinnati Kid and in his Oscar-nominated role The Sand Pebbles.
25. December 4th 2011 @ 16:25. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Anon,

Interesting you say that when Steve was in fact homeless for a time in his youth and like Robert Mitchum made sure he never went back to squalor.

Totally agree that few modern stars have the screen presence of McQueen (Viggo Mortensen, Benicio Del Toro and Gabriel Byrne are a few that have that old school cool.)

Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Always a pleasure to meet another fan of the king of cool.
