Sundance 2007: John Doe Picks - Footage Included
Sundance 2007 Film Festival Picks
It’s awards season again and while the MTV Movie awards, Golden Globes, Emmy and Oscars reward banal, feel good films that feature contrived realities and sub standard performances by superstars, Sundance still manages to commend originality and flair.
Sure it has become more commercial as its success has grown, but whenever I look at the films I enjoy from each year, invariably the majority have received their dues at Bobby Redford’s little snow capped festivities.
Welcome, Im Bob Redford you might remember me from such films and The Candidate, All the Presidents Men and The Sting
Donnie Darko, Memento, Pi, Primer, Station Agent, American Splendour, the list goes on and on for fine films that Sundance has put on a pedestal over the years. Movies that the public and other awards shows only catch on to after the revolution.
This year features an exemplary line up, though I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly peruse all the entries, a few have jumped out at me.
Cib over at 20/20 Filmsight drew my attention to the domestic zombie film Fido which stars Carrie Anne Moss and the Japanese craziness of BugMaster which is helmed by the director of Akira.
There are numerous documentaries that look rich in detail and relevant information…Chicago 10 tells of 8 anti war protesters put on trial after the 1963 Democratic National Convention…..Banished: How Whites Drove Blacks Out Of Town in America is about racial upheavel during the birth of a nation. Girl 27 takes us back to the Hollywood heyday of the 30’s when MGM hosted a stag party that resulted in the raping of under age woman. …No End in Sight examines the US invasion of Iraq and Bush’s no retreat, no surrender attitude….Nanking traces the atrocities that were rendered upon it…
I couldn’t find trailers for all the films that interested me, so with limited time I just selected 4 that I will be looking out for in the coming years when they finally arrive on our shores.Stay tuned for John Doe's highlights of Canne and the Telluride Festival.

I wouldnt know my ass from my elbow I would be so excited to be at Sundance.......although Canne also ranks very highly too...
Lots of great films that will be delayed releases in Oz, while crap from the Oscars will actually get rereleased so the public sheep can baa baa their way to a film they had no interest in on initial release (Eg: Crash)
I have to agree Leto is a flake, but when he flops the right way it makes for interesting watching...
I am a massive Catherine Keener fan and think An American Crime could be quite the highlight....
That trailer for the Signal got me very excited, ive been hearing buzz about it for a while now.

On the Chapman front it probably has something to do with Chapter 27 of Catcher in The Rye, his fave book and in his mind teh reason for the crime...
Did An American Crime entice?

The basic ideas and concepts of Donnie turned up in Star Trek long ago....
Personally I thought Donnie (the original cut) gave us all the info we needed to understand it...the Directors Cuts had big flashing neon signs to guide us. Starting with INxs Never Tear Us Apart being right on the nose as opposed to the inferered brilliance of Echo and the Bunnyman lyrics.....

Totally subjective, Im probably just to deeply ensconced in pop culture....there is plenty of subpar movies that make me smile.
