This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Sundance 2007: John Doe Picks - Footage Included

Sundance 2007 Film Festival Picks

Sundance 2007
Sundance up in lights
It’s awards season again and while the MTV Movie awards, Golden Globes, Emmy and Oscars reward banal, feel good films that feature contrived realities and sub standard performances by superstars, Sundance still manages to commend originality and flair.

Sure it has become more commercial as its success has grown, but whenever I look at the films I enjoy from each year, invariably the majority have received their dues at Bobby Redford’s little snow capped festivities.

Sundance 2007
Welcome, Im Bob Redford you might remember me from such films and The Candidate, All the Presidents Men and The Sting

Donnie Darko, Memento, Pi, Primer, Station Agent, American Splendour, the list goes on and on for fine films that Sundance has put on a pedestal over the years. Movies that the public and other awards shows only catch on to after the revolution.

This year features an exemplary line up, though I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly peruse all the entries, a few have jumped out at me.

Cib over at 20/20 Filmsight drew my attention to the domestic zombie film Fido which stars Carrie Anne Moss and the Japanese craziness of BugMaster which is helmed by the director of Akira.

There are numerous documentaries that look rich in detail and relevant information…Chicago 10 tells of 8 anti war protesters put on trial after the 1963 Democratic National Convention…..Banished: How Whites Drove Blacks Out Of Town in America is about racial upheavel during the birth of a nation. Girl 27 takes us back to the Hollywood heyday of the 30’s when MGM hosted a stag party that resulted in the raping of under age woman. …No End in Sight examines the US invasion of Iraq and Bush’s no retreat, no surrender attitude….Nanking traces the atrocities that were rendered upon it…

I couldn’t find trailers for all the films that interested me, so with limited time I just selected 4 that I will be looking out for in the coming years when they finally arrive on our shores.Stay tuned for John Doe's highlights of Canne and the Telluride Festival.

An American Crime
Director: Tommy O Haver
Starring: Catherine Keener, Ellen Page, James Franco
Set in the 1960’s this is the tragic story of a sociopathic, manipulative mother who victimized her children and subjected them to extreme psychological abuse. Based on a true story.

Chapter 27
Director: J B Schaffer
Starring: Jared Letto, Brian O Neil, Lindsay Lohan
An examination of Mark David Chapman, the man who assassinated John Lennon, the film traces the day before the tragic event. Actor jared Letto plays Chapman and gained 60 pounds for the role.

Couldn’t find a trailer but here is an interview with Jared Leto where he talks about his radical weight gain.

Delirious
Director:Tom DiCillo
Starring: Steve Buscemi, Elvis Costello, Gina Gershon, Minnie Driver, Michael Pitt
From Director Tom DiCillo (Living In Oblivion, Johnny Suede) Paparazzi, celebrity and the homeless come together in a comedy drama that looks unique and inspired.

The Signal
Director: David Bruckner and Dan Bush
Starring: AJ Bowen, Steve Warren
Horror film that looks to contain elements of the X Files, blended with David Cronenburg's Rabid and Shivers.

I never know what to think about Leto... I've seen him do some great roles (Requiem for a Dream and American Psycho come to mind...), but recently, he seems a little flaky.

There's just too many movies to look forward to at Sundance. Can you imagine if you were there? You'd go ballistic...

Hi Cib,

I wouldnt know my ass from my elbow I would be so excited to be at Sundance.......although Canne also ranks very highly too...

Lots of great films that will be delayed releases in Oz, while crap from the Oscars will actually get rereleased so the public sheep can baa baa their way to a film they had no interest in on initial release (Eg: Crash)

I have to agree Leto is a flake, but when he flops the right way it makes for interesting watching...

I am a massive Catherine Keener fan and think An American Crime could be quite the highlight....

That trailer for the Signal got me very excited, ive been hearing buzz about it for a while now.

The Signal looks great! Very up my alley! Delirious looks good!! I love Living in Oblivion and Johnny Suede. And Chapter 27 sounds like it'll be good also, I wonder what the title refers to? Chapman's diary??
4. January 22nd 2007 @ 02:41. JohnDoe Says:
Thought The Signal would excite you Bryn,

On the Chapman front it probably has something to do with Chapter 27 of Catcher in The Rye, his fave book and in his mind teh reason for the crime...

Did An American Crime entice?

I had forgotten to look at that one. I have a bit of a problem with trailers that look like they're gonna spill most the flick in one fell swoop, which American Crime trailer was looking to do, so I stopped watching after a minute ... But it looks great, which is another reason I stopped, I prefer not to know too much in advance.
I love Catherine Keener, one of my fave female actors, and Ellen Page from Hard Candy is very good to, as is James Franco ...

Thats what I thought youd say...totally with you on hating trailers that give away to much..Ellen Page is right on teh money in hard candy, could well be the best female perfromance of 2006...though the daughter in Little Miss Sunshine was sublime too,

Totally welcome, there are some other great titles screening this year, but these were the only ones I had time to get footage for.

Sorry man, what does TMI stand for?

I actually hated Buffy the TV Show, (The movie was OK though) it tried to hard and had dull characters that sprouted self referential dialogue that catered to the Baywaytch crowd while not remembering it was a modern day Munsters.

The basic ideas and concepts of Donnie turned up in Star Trek long ago....

Personally I thought Donnie (the original cut) gave us all the info we needed to understand it...the Directors Cuts had big flashing neon signs to guide us. Starting with INxs Never Tear Us Apart being right on the nose as opposed to the inferered brilliance of Echo and the Bunnyman lyrics.....

Im a fan of self referential humour when it hits its mark (eg: Galaxy Quest, Princess Bride) but in Buffy it just always went for the obvious. Which is strange for Weadon, but he learnt from his mistakes because Firefly is executed with precision...........must admit Im not a fan of kiddie horror either...choosing to satarize the more interesting "heavy" moments while dwelling on fluff ideas....

Totally subjective, Im probably just to deeply ensconced in pop culture....there is plenty of subpar movies that make me smile.

Always fun chatting...
