Sydney Film Festival 2007 Program
Sydney Film Festival 2007 - John Doe Selections
Well its that time of year again when the best cinema of the world descends on Sydney and treats us to films that often don’t receive general release till months sometimes years later.
Last year saw advance screenings of the instant cult classics like Brick and Hard Candy, plus superb documentaries and foreign delights.
This years Festival runs from June 8-24 and promises exciting entries and unique curios plus a host of informative compendium events.
John Doe finally had the chance to look at this years schedule today and is very impressed with the selection available. So here are a few of the titles that have him polishing up his movie marathon skills in preparation for 2 weeks of over indulgence.
Topping JD’s list for this year has to be David Lynch’s (Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Eraserhead)latest Inland Empire, which stars Laura Dern, Harry Dean Stanton and Jeremy Irons and as usual a bizarre plotline.
The highly anticipated Russian Vampire flick Daywatch which is the sequel to the strikingly original Nightwatch and the second instalment in the epic trilogy also entices.

The New Zealand Horror/comedy Black Sheep will be good for a laugh.
Check out the Braindead style humour of the Black Sheep Trailer.
The US B grade salute Teeth a twisted tale of sexual awakening that homage’s David Cronenburg and Alien amongst others.
Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson (A Hole in My Heart, Lilya 4-ever, Fucking Åmål) aims to push the boundaries of the medium with his latest Container. It is an avante garde experimental Black and White film that uses distorted audio and obtuse cinematography to spark sensory responses and trigger cerebral awakening in the western world.
Based on the true story of the Aramoana massacre Out of the Blue is a New Zealand film that examines the events leading to this shocking crime that resulted in the slaughter of the innocent victims.
In the documentary stakes we have the most controversial entry in this years Cannes Festival called Zoo, a study of beastiality. In 2005 a man died of a ruptured colon after sex with his trusty steed. This film interviews people who knew him and also explores the deeply disturbing issues of this warped crime against nature.
Warning: the trailer addresses subject matter that deeply disturbs John Doe and even he is not sure that he is open minded enough to handle the Documentary.
Operation Filmmaker is a documentary about a young Iraqi filmmaker who is invited onset to shoot behind the scenes footage for Liev Shreiber’s (RKO 581) film Everything is Illuminated. Instead he decides to covertly explore the U.S attitude to self promoting charity and politically correct responsibility through cleverly worded interviews.
Tasmanian Devil: The Fast and Furious life of Errol Flynn delves into the exploits of the legendary swashbuckler who’s appetite for drugs, booze and broads has seldom been matched.
The Festival wouldn’t be complete without a retrospective on one of the greatest filmmakers ever to dominate the industry. This years legend is John Huston, a multi talented force in celluloid history who’s single minded work redefined genres and off set adventures matched the fiction he brought to life.
For the uninitiated John Doe highly recommends The Dead, Ashphalt Jungle, The Man Who Would Be King, Treasure of Sierra Madre and Fat City
JD has run out of time today, this is only the first frames of the silver screen euphoria on offer at the festival this year, so he strongly urges readers to check out the complete program schedule for full details.(Click Link below)

I want to see Inland Empire (gotta love David Lynch) and possibly some others.
I really don't like what is implied in Zoo with the rope...
...
After a bit of browsing, I've decided that the lesbian romance Searching 4 Sandeep is up my alley as well.
... Hm, I just remembered that I'm going to be in Thailand for the majority of June - d'oh!
Film & TV on DVD
Agreed, This time of year is like Christmas for film geeks.
Hi Postmodern,
Sorry about the link...totally agree Zoo could be an irrsponsible picture, but it could also be an insight into a part of the human experince often ignored, hence never properly dealt with by society.
Searching 4 Sadeep could sounds interesting....have you seen Show Me Love aka Fucking Amal?...great film from Sweden you should check out if you haven't already.
Shame about the Thailand trip, the festival may make it worthy of a reschedule.
