Tarantino’s Mind – A Short film
Cypher of the Inner Geek
First up, apologies to readers for the infrequent posts. Mr Doe's time is tight at present and he aspires to return to providing a daily celluloid treat. Sadly its proving hard, but he wishes to thank all of you for your support and and fully intends to return to regular blogging when time permits. Now on with a tasty slice of film stock.
Originally surfacing on dailymotion.com, today’s slice of cinema bliss comes in the form of a clip hailing from Brazil. Titled “Tarantino’s Mind”, the footage features a pair of cinephiles extolling the virtues, vices and short comings of the hyperactive Reservoir Dogs creator.
Sitting in a restaurant the conversation unfolds into a dissection of the Tarantino Filmography with insightful observations and clever criticisms that are fuelled by a primary love of cinema lore. Want to know what's in the briefcase from Pulp Fiction?
Providing laughs and a kinship with the characters, Johnny found himself smiling from the first “Sam Peckinpah” frame through to it’s code cracking conclusion. It all felt like a conversation any number of film geeks have had with several theories many have been debating for years.
Reminiscent of euro-classic like My Dinner with Andre the film doesn’t aspire to be in QT’s world, just observe it from the distance of fandom. In sticking with that theme, the questioning friend in the piece is played by Seu Jorge (City of God). Jorge is a musician/actor that appeared in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic and performed all those fantastic Portuguese Bowie Covers on the soundtrack.
JD is NOT one who considers Tarantino a lord of modern moving pictures, instead as stated in his review of Death Proof, “The Director’s work has always existed to recreate the schlock entertainment he loves not revolutionize cinema.”.
That doesn’t mean the Doe doesn’t enjoy the zesty passion that seems to populate QT’s universe and I think that’s why this rewarding subtitled gem delighted. (A love of B Cinema – Z grade schlock helps too.)

Such a shameless cine thief.
Still, there's enough savvy and wit within Pulp Fiction to provide endless discussions, but I think Reservoir Dogs is easily the best film he ever made.

Reservoir Dogs is my favourite, but I think Jackie Brown is his best.

Great clip, though! Well-shot, excellent script!
I'd have to go back and watch Jackie Brown... for me, it'll always be Pulp Fiction that's my favourite, simply because it was the first one I saw, and it blew my little mind out. The opening scene and the opening credits had me transfixed...

It is a fun clip isn't it, regardless of Tarantino fandom it has geek chic all over it.
I agree that i think tarantino is well aware of his place in cinema history, its just a whole generation who have never seen the films that inspire him seem to think he is an original visionary. No doubt he is a superb writer.
Pulp Fiction is a fun film for sure I just think Reservoir Dogs has more vitality. Jackie Brown is sublime, there is something far more technically dazzling present than in any of his other films. The Cinematography, music and editing all give the dialogue extra weight and also surprisingly an emotional context.

And yeah, Res Dogs is a far better film than Pulp Fiction. But both leave Jackie Brown for dead, for my money.
As for Death Proof... well, I went to the Chauvel for the double-feature, and Planet Terror was a VERY tough act to follow

I had to laugh at the Federer line.
Thanks JD!

No love for jackie Brown?? I still consider it tarantino's most accomplished work and one that truly shows if he wanted to he could make films with genuine substance.
Nice to see you round, how are things going?
