Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) – John Doe's Favourite Moments
Unforgettable Terminator 2 Moments
Certain films are beyond objective criticism for John Doe. They have been watched so many times that they are a part of his psyche. These are childhood cinematic adventures that every editorial beat, breath, camera choice and line of dialogue is ingrained in his memory clearer than the events in his real life. (Eg: Raider of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Goonies, Back To The Future etc)
JD realizes there is a whole generation of like minded Cinephiles who also adore these films. Look online or in print and you see fans have over analyzed, discussed and hypothesized on them to the point where it’s near impossible to find an original voice.
Even if Johnny broke the films into tiny pieces and dissected every scene, creative choice and deeper meaning with a thousand page thesis there would be very little freshness. Sure he can find the faults in some of these box office juggernauts that everyone has seen, but to express them in writing would be to nit-pick unforgettable escapist cinema of the highest grade.
Watching Terminator 2 last night inspired this idea when he realized, this was a work he was too close too. Granted JD prefers the original but the epic effect of witnessing T2 for the first time in cinemas as a teen has stayed with him.
So, as an example of lazy journalism, instead of doing extensive research questing for that elusive unique angle John Doe begins a random series that offers selective, entirely subjective highlights that share a unique perspective, his own.
In an effort to stimulate conversation and provoke feedback, below is a list of John Doe’s favourite moments from the high concept, technology driven James Cameron powerhouse known as Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Favourite Line:
“There's 215 bones in the human body. That's one.” – Sarah Connor
Favourite Science Fiction Philosophizing:
“Dyson listened while the Terminator laid it all down: Skynet, Judgment Day, the history of things to come. It's not everyday you find out that you're responsible for 3 billion deaths. He took it pretty well.” – Sarah Connor

So did you have a favourite moment in T2?
I very purposefully left out what could well be the most memorable moment of the entire film...

As you can see from the list my favourite action scene is the LA River (canal) bike versus truck chase too...the hospital escape would be second and Skynet raid third..all fantasticly shot and cut scenes for sure.
Totally agree the pursuit is one of the most exhilarating ever conceived.

I'm gonna rise to your challenge and actually tell you what my top moments are!
1) Hasta la Vista baby - Arnie shoots the frozen T-1000 and it shatters
2) Bad To The bone cranks up as Arnie whips on the shades and motors off on the chopper
3) T-1000 imitates john Connors foster mother and then impales the father's skull as he's drinking milk
4) Arnie gives the thumbs up to Edward Furlong as he lowers into the molten steel as the virtuosic score plays over the scene
....I'm gonna stop there as I could go on forever. I also have the extended special tin box fancy pants edition of T2 and so many gen X-ers have said they thought T-1 was better, but T-2 was the one they all remembered.
When Avatar came out I had a few people say to me that they didnt think it had anything on T-2, I'm inclined to agree

I think it might be high time I watched the movie again, perhaps a double whammy feature with the first movie, which, like you, is easily my favourite, and in my top twenty favourite movies of all time.
Hi Bryn,
The Extended edition originally came out on Laser Disc in the early 90's and the DVD ultimate edition running 156 minutes was released around 2000 I think.
The one I know best features the dream sequence where Reese turns up in the mental hospital.
Well worth revisiting these, I hadn't seen T2 in sometime and was very pleased how it held up.

Hi Shaun,
Congrats, you named the two most iconic moments that I purposefully left off my list. The "Hasta La Vista" line and "Bad to the Bone" sequence. Watching it with my buddy we both commented how The Bad to the Bone scene was so well done it has become cliche, in a good way.
I must admit teh one moment I hated even a a kid was the thumbs up at the end, without it that scene could have had more emotional weight.
For me T1 is such a quality Sci-Fi/Horror film that really does keep its edge...as an Action sci fi extravaganzas T2 is near faultless but no where near as effecting. Both quality though, no doubt.
Thanks for playing along

C'mon JD, it's a bit of fun, this is T-2 we're talking about here, not The Iceman Cometh

I know it's T2 but in that final scene I used to get choked up as a kid and it did resonate for me right up till that thumbs up point.
Even watching it the other night there was an element of John Connors pet is dying and even more so the only father figure he will ever have is gone. I do form an emotional connection to the machine in a King Kong way as he was finding his humanity and sacrifices himself in a noble way few people can even rise too.
James Cameron the bastard made me care about the creature

That second part of the deleted scene was removed I believe because of the acting..Mostly because Edward Furlong noticeably aged during the shooting and that was one of the moments where his voice was breaking ....that being said from a narrative point of view, what comes before and after it really enhances the whole scope of the film and explains the Terminator learning curve better...plus Sarah's actions are totally understandable and it always irked me that she just let the chip be removed without exploring the chance she could destroy the Terminator. Removing logic, the emotional effect from the first film and everything she had been through makes the scene very honest.
As for dialogue I think what John Connor says about trusting him is perfect even if the delivery is off.

I will be curious to see what you think watching the extended cut where it is reinserted into the body of the film. I never saw it separately so your perspective is different to how I always saw it.

I tend to be one of those people who gets a little too much into things they like, but I manage to keep it in check most of the time!
