The Damage Done – John Doe’s Short Film of the Moment
Johnny has a pair of short films for y'all on this Friday the 13th, breaking the tradition, don't expect any horror today.
Vimeo.com really is a superb place to target prospective talent. The gritty Western fable The Damage Done is just the latest in a wagon train of projects that have wrangled John Doe’s attention.
The synopsis is described on the website as “A hired gun is tasked by the local sheriff to apprehend a bank robber in a hostile area of 1890 New Mexico. The dangerous assignment is complicated by a personal secret which the gunman is trying to protect.”
Picturesquely realized by Director Sam Balcomb and beautifully shot by DOP Kholi Hicks. The Deadwood style musical score composed by Lisbeth Scott adds the final element to the rugged and tough landscape populated by an atmosphere of impending confrontation.
There is a scout tracker's attention given to every component, especially the fabric conscious costume designs and obviously nod to the long coat aesthetic of Once Upon a Time in the West. The torn flesh FX of the wounded players add realism that compliments the use of natural light and some impressive lens flare that puts the viewer in the blistering sun.
The acting is solid with Gregory Lee Kenyon owning the role of Henry Wells. The man sent out to prove himself to the townsfolk of Cutter. The actor hints at a cross between Christian Bale and Sam Merlott in True Blood.
The rest of the cast include Sarah Prikryl as Dorothy Stewart the damsel in distress, Jeff Doba, Jamie Alexander and Camden Toy.
JD is on a bit of a short film cattle drive this week and the story with a running time of just over 10 minutes delivers with a reigned in script. Lines like “You are my guest darling, but I didn’t bring you up here to play solitaire” sticking in the mind. This is a moody little cowboy treat worth saddling up for.
Winning first prize at the 2010 DVX WESTFEST, The Damage Done is produced by Rainfall Films.
