What makes Johnny, so Depp?

"Anyone can look like somebody , but similarly you have to embody the essence of that person" - From the trailer for The Essence of Depp

What is that intangible quality that makes a star a star. That elevates a human beings charisma to such a point that even when they are seemingly doing nothing you still can’t take your eyes of them.

Brando had it till the end, Pacino and De Niro lost it, Hoffman found it again and in the modern lexicon Robert Downey Jnr, Sean Penn and Johnny Depp were blessed with it. It’s an essence, an aura that combines with a disposition and talent for immersing themselves in roles. Employing their own psychology to remove their identity and superimpose a scripted character on top of emotive personal baggage.

Encompassing a part to the point where the audience forgets they are watching a lie. It takes dedication and a skill that can’t be taught to create a unique, fully functioning individual on camera. That why, in this celebrity addicted world fuelled by an insatiable craving for attention, fame and wealth some struggling performers who resemble an established names physical appearance opt to impersonate their style and technique.

Adopting ticks and mannerisms that all begins with living as the fictional characeters, which brings us to today’s video treat. It’s the trailer for a new low budget mockumentary comedy with the catchy title The Essence of Depp.

Disturbing as it entertains, the illusionary nature of an actors quest is a mine field of psychiatrist’s visits waiting to happen. Destiny, fate and luck are disregarded when you lack the confidence to be yourself and instead permanently dream of being someone else to the exclusion of your own identity.

Scary...the lengths some people go to, to be seen/heard/watched. Though hats-off to him for being *enterprising*...

Freaky, John. I was just doing a post on Film Peek and updating the one on my blog about Sweeney Todd and was thinking what an enigmatic actor Johnny is.

This is fascinating and true:

Encompassing a part to the point where the audience forgets they are watching a lie. It takes dedication and a skill that can’t be taught to create a unique, fully functioning individual on camera.

I think he's already achieved this in Sweeney and that's just by the poster. It's captured me.

Excellent post,

Tracy

Great post - and interesting idea for a movie.

I love Johnny - he is one of my favourite all time actors and long time crush. From 21 Jumpstreet to Edward Scissorhands to Chocolat to Pirates.

Cheers
CC

Hi JD,

I'm not sure I fully 'get this,' but I don't think anyone can do Johnny better than Johnny... and I think fans will know, although that may well add the joy to it...interesting...

As a great fan of Depps versatility and abilities, not to mention his attributes and sex appeal, I'll look out for this one... although I'm sure I will be aware of the fact that I'm watching a poor facsimilie... I hope it remains entertaining throughout?

Lilla ...

Have you seen 'The Nick Of Time?'

Go to the website JD linked to get a better idea.

Well, my curiosity is piqued. It's a great premise for a mockumentary..the sub-category of people who emulate a living famous person. Should be a good show.

Just figures the main character is from L.A.

It just figures.

Good to see you Laura M,

Really is bizarre to think of make a living by allowing another persons traits to define you...but sunglasses off for them amusing us.

I will be heading over to your "You had me at, damn it cant even remember the line", I hate that film and that line

Hi Tracy,

Creepy is as creepy does, in this case John Doe is and does.

Sweeney Todd had me psyched but now that its being sanitized for mass consumption I cant help but wait for an uncut DVD....

Hi CC,

Im a Depp follower too, though I hated Pirates, chocolat and Scissorhands are great. My favourite of his films is Dead man.

Glad you enjoyed the post.

Hi Lilla,

Disturbing as it sounds there are people who try to live there lives as a celebrity. This is the trailer for a documentary/mockumentary on the day to day life of a Depp wannabe. I dont think anyone would mistake this guy for the real thing because he lacks the "essence"

Nick of Time is great fun, I love the Director John Boorman's (Excalibur, Deliverance, Hell in the pacific) work and Chris walken is in dynamite form...actual time thrillers always have a sense of urgency and entertain...except the crappy TV series 24 which lets you know 10 seconds in how it will end.

what's amazing is how many people don't realize that this is a mockumentary. they think the character is a real guy being followed around thinking he's the very essence of depp. it's like a waiting for guffman kinda film. anyway, it's got really great actors in it. clayton rohner, david lago, christian le blanc even a special apperance by john enos. if you want maybe i can arrange to get you a copy. you can contact me through the movie's myspace.
