The Reef – John Doe’s Trailer of the Moment
The Jaws of Death Circle Their Prey
The fins are in the water, the monster of the deep rising, but it isn’t Bruce.
Baring more than a passing resemblance to Open Water, (Which JD enjoyed) the new Aussie killer shark frenzy The Reef has just had a new trailer preview online via joblo.com.
Based on a true story, the synopsis on the official website for The Reef goes like this:
“Kate, her brother Matt and his girlfriend Suzie arrive at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to meet up with Kate’s ex-lover Luke. Luke and his friend Warren deliver boats round the world for a living. Luke’s offered to take his three friends sailing for a week on a boat he has to deliver to Indonesia. On the water Kate and Luke’s relationship starts to reignite but it’s fraught with old conflicts. Dawn, the next day. Suddenly the boat flips. There is a frantic struggle to save themselves and get on to the overturned hull. On top of the hull they see that the keel has been ripped away.
Assessing the situation Luke decides their best chance for survival is to swim for a nearby island. Should they swim or should they stay? One of them refuses to go whilst the other four decide to try and make the island. As they swim they become aware that they are being stalked by a huge shark. Based on true events, THE REEF is a tense survival thriller that begs the question, what would I do in this situation?”

The film is Directed by Andrew Traucki who navigated the Northern Australian mangrove croc nightmare Black Water with a restraint that kept the creature feature very much in the realm of possibility.
The Reef stars Damian Walsh-Howling who made an impact recently with the acclaimed Sundance winner Animal Kingdom. Other locals in the cast include Zoe Naylor (McLeods Daughter), Kieran Darcy-Smith (Underbelly), Adrienne Pickering (Knowing) and Gyton Grantley (Underbelly).
Like so many of us, when John Doe saw Jaws as a grommet it reshaped his oceanic perspective and was the burly in the water for all future Carcharodon Carcharias picture addictions. Impressed by the Directors controlled execution of Black Water JD is treading water in anticipation for this suspenseful human chum survival story.

It all looks kinda hokey to be honest, the acting doesn't seem that crash hot, but I like that they're using real shark footage. Fingers crossed it marries up with whatever fake shark stuff they use.
And I hope it's gory!

I think that sub par acting goes hand in hand with this type of pseudo doco type film (Eg: Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch etc), its the "real" environments that work for me....I did find Open Water effective and that had truly dodgy performances..
I don't know about too much gore, after all if it feels staged it loses authenticity and breaks the illusion.

I hope it's better than others I've seen, and if they're using real footage it might add some atmosphere.
I might have to learn about more about it, but the trailer looks alright.

Hi Bryn,
i don't think this one is going the found footage route ala Blair Witch or one character carries a camera like Open Water, but I do think it's going for that low budget authenticity like what the Director did with Black Water.
In the "Shark Clips" section of the official site it says:
This quote plus the mood of the trailer is what leads me to think that false realism is trying to be achieved, especially by using real sharks as props.

Hi Kirstine,
I'm a sucker for shark films too and agree that many are sadly unimpressive (Eg: Deep Blue Sea).
Using real footage of real sharks really ups the believability for me too and I hope this one delivers like Open Water did.
