Film & TV on DVD - John Doe News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

The Women of Cinema History - A Visual salute

September 3rd 2007 00:43
Starlets, Bombshells and Bimbos.

A non-demanding start to the work week, special Thanks go to D. Armenta over at Debatefan.com for bringing this fine art to my attention.

Ava Gardner
The many faces of Ava Gardner

“Deep down, Im pretty superficial”Ava Gardner

This is a morphing Montage of Women throughout Cinema History. Alluring temptation with delicate, striking features and exquisite, photogenic faces, each figure triggers a celluloid laced memory.
“I´m no Sexgoddess but I haven't spent my life in a tree ...”Ingrid Bergman

Ann Margaret
The tempting Ann Margaret

These are iconic performers whose projected images were larger than life influencing fashion, ideals and pop culture.
“Darling, the legs aren't so beautiful, I just know what to do with them.”Marlene Dietrich

Audrey Hepburn Ingrid Bergman
Berman and Hepburn bring a touch of class

Starting with the early beauties like Mary Pickford, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Gloria Swanson to Carole Lombard and Katherine Hepburn. Continuing through the Golden Age of Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman and Ava Gardner
“I live by a man's code, designed to fit a man's world, yet at the same time I never forget that a woman's first job is to choose the right shade of lipstick.”Carol Lombard

Sophia Loren
Sophia Loren brings sultry back

Entering the sexually liberated 1960’s, bombshells like Raquel Welch, Ann Margaret and Jane Fonda leading into the decade of decadence then excess through to modern day.
“Being a sex symbol was rather like being a convict.”Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch
The flesh of Raquel arrives

Capturing John Doe’s minds eye in a trance, I hope this cleverly engineered clip does the same for you.

Welcome Tracy,

It really is interesting to see the class and style drift out of the leading lady over time reduced to todays standards of surgically altered Sharon Stone/Demi Moore types.

I was going to do a post on something else today but when D Armenta sent me the link I knew others would be affected in the same way.

Oh Ava...Ohhhh Raquel....I swear...if I had to...um...'turn', it would be for these women!

All these Celluloid Goddesses women knew how to wield wit too.

Beautiful post JD. Hope you are well. Happy Spring!

Dusk

JohnDoe, I'm looking forward to viewing the clip when I can (my internet has been shaped). However, I definitely concur with the point you have made - there used to be a sensuality and uniqueness to leading ladies that is mostly absent now. It seems that women in Hollywood, particularly the young starlets, all have a sameness to them that is just sad.

Hi Dusk, happy spring to you (Here's hoping I get a face mask and survive my allergies which always take hold around now)

It was tough to decide which images to post because all the early ones are so admirable, irresistible and talented...

So pleased that you enjoyed the eye candy on a lazy Monday and thanks for the "beautiful" compliment.

Hi Nina,
It is sad that we seem to have a one look fits all style for beauty now, totally agree the unique has been replaced by the prepackaged and often manipulated image that owes more to technology that talent of presence. Plus the wooden, pouting without depth of the Nicole Kidman and Angie Jolie's brigade is just plain boring onscreen.

Thanks for dropping in, I hope you see the footage soon it really is moving.

Oh My GOD!!...that clip is amazing! I forgot to watch it the first time around.
(am trying to get to as many posts as possible from my new post subscriber notification list!)

Maclaine to Wood wow...and that Brigitte to Sophia then Ann Margaret to Julie to Raquel morph is incredible. Gives credence to the beauty symmetry theory.

Wonderful JD...just amazing!

Like Nina - not able to view the clip just yet - but it's bookmarked ready for later in the day.

Would agree in essence with all that's been said so far though - your pre-packaged quip is right on the mark.

Cheers

JD,

What a parade of stunning beauty!!! Puts the stick thin blonde bimbo's who are apparently 'beautiful' these days to shame.

I saw an article on Sophia Loren on the weekend. She's 72 years old and still an absolutely stunning looking woman.

Great post!

That's a fantastic clip, JD -- thanks for sharing. The morphs were brilliant. The head-turners of years ago sure are different from the wannabes of today's...

It amazed me too Dusk, their is a surreal quality to skipping across time and space or face. The symmetry thing does seem evident.

Hi MNG,
Looking forward to reading what you think once you've viewed the morphing magic.

I think the whole glamour thing went out once the paparazzi attacked and the studio protection was removed.

Hi KylieW,

Sophia has aged gracefully hasn't she and has no allusions about her appeal.

I think that image and beauty were always distorted and orchestrated but now it is a fine tuned mathematical science which feels obvious and forced....well that and the whole negative body image thing.

Its dull the mongoloid surgery look that they all seem to have purchased from the same catalogue..matching lips, eyes, ears, jaws...yawn.

Ava was a little bit before my time but I'd put her up against any on the starlets today! Also, isn't it amazing the Pam Anderson didn't make the clip??????

Hi James,
Ava was sublime, my personal fave is jane Russell when it comes to "assets".

Did Pam Anderson ever have another big screen film after Barb Wire?

Thanks JD! I thought of you as soon as I saw the clip.

Audrey Hepburn will always be one of my faves...

Now we need a "Men in film"!!

Any volunteers?

Indeed, actually re-listening to it... isn't it the same piece played in Master and Commander?

Wasn't Ava Gardiner stunning, and I also thought Rita Hayworth was just beautiful. The thing they had that is lacking now is simple class! You can't have class when you don't wear undies.

Hi Lilla,

I'm not sure about Master and Commander only saw it once and found it totally forgettable. (Except some of the cinematography)

Ava Gardner's beauty still leaves me gasping for air, having just watched The Killers again recently she seemed to have the gift right from frame one.

Rita Hayworth knocks me out and your right its the sense of mystery hidden beneath the costumes that inspires lust, instead of blatant flesh displays.

Thanks for the visit

Hi Morgan,

It is a surreal exercise isn't it. Strangely hypnotic.

Glad you liked it and thanks for dropping in.
