Spoon – John Doe’s Trailer of the Moment
Wikus tells The Hitcher what to do.
South African star Sharlto Copley has always aspired to get behind the lens. Now a teaser trailer for his Directorial feature film debut titled Spoon has gone online courtesy of twitchfilm.net.
Best known as Wikus, the stumbling field operative for MNU whose District 9 prawn relocation assignment goes horribly wrong, he will soon be seen as Mad Dog Murdoch in Joe Carnahan’s A-Team remake.
The enticing imdb synopsis describes Spoon as “A thriller with supernatural overtones about a man with a medical condition that causes him to black out during moments of extreme stress and leads him to make a remarkable discovery about himself”.
The sneak footage taunts us with the former Hitcher, soon to be Hobo with a Shotgun Rutger Hauer as Victor Spoon, a maniacal father who is attempting to provoke his unstable son Daniel played by Darren Boyd (Four Lions).
Co writing with Simon Hansen, Sharlto started shooting the low budget film a few years back and though imdb.com lists it as 2008 production it is still being completed. Obviously the arrival of this small slice promo indicates that a distribution deal is in the works but no release date has been announced.
Sounding like a Memento type brain screw melded with a Videodrome like tone John Doe is excited by this early preview. Combined with Copley and Hansen's behind the scenes work on District 9 and FX knowledge this could well be a fun little trip into psychological nightmare territory. The name Rutger Hauer also carries heavy anticipatory weight too.
