Today Empire Online reported on the latest casting developments for Director Tomas Aldreson’s remake of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy based on the classic espionage novel by former MI5 and MI6 operative John Le Carre.

Many cinephiles and fangaholics lapped up the Swedish filmmakers poetic getting of wisdom vampire entry Let the Right One In and ever since have been eagerly gnawing on throats in anticipation of his next project.

Gary Oldman can't even sit on a chair properly, imagine what he will do with an outside the box spy.
With pre production moving along, the first name attached was the former Dracula, lord of bloodsuckers Gary Oldman. Now word comes that Ralph Fiennes, star of The Constant Gardener based on another Le Carre work has signed on. Joining him are Inglorious Basterd Michael Fassbender and Single Man Colin Firth.

Previously adapted as a successful 1979 British TV miniseries Directed by John Irvin (The Dogs of War, City of Industry) and starring Jedi master Alec Guiness, improving on the original is going to require stealth, cunning and covert tactics.

The original Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on DVD
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy tells the story of a retired Intelligence agent George Smiley, whose tenacious and perceptive talents have served him well. Called back into active duty he is recruited to hunt down a Russian mole that has infiltrated the highest levels of the Secret Service.

Taking the jargon littered source and writing for the screen is Frost/Nixon and The Last King of Scotland scribe Peter Morgan.

Still in the early stages of development and scheduled for a 2012 release nothing more is known yet, but expect John Doe to be on top of behind the scenes, trailer and poster news as it emerges.

Interesting that the man who is having his breakthrough film remade is now drawing up a remake of his own. Love the book, love the miniseries, so would normally say I'm not thrilled by this remake - but the peeps involved so far are a quality bunch.

I've never been big on spy movies ... apart from the odd Bond flick, does The Girl with Dragon Tattoo count?

Another great director lured from the arthouse to Hollywood. It's enough to make you weep JD. Not familiar with this tale but I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed that it's not a disaster.

There is a real irony to the remake cycle isn't there? I'm a huge fan of the book and the miniseries and agree with the cast assembled this could be something special.

Really Bryn?

Not even the Harry palmer series that started with The Ipcress File or the melancholy grit of the Spy Who came In From The Cold?

While Dragon tattoo chicky did have elements that make a good spy film i would not define it as such.

Agreed David, there is a systemic problem with the Arthouse to Hollywood evolution...let's just hope Alfredson doesn't end up another Woo, Besson, etc and falls more into the Del Toro camp.
