Hmmmmm ... A curious top twenty JD ... As enjoyable as Donnie Darko is I certainly wouldn't have him in my top ten, but hey, seems he caressed a cosmic nerve of yours.
I'd certainly have Memento, No Country For Old Men, Amores Perros, Oldboy, Let the Right One In, WALL-E and Requiem For A Dream up there though.
Seems everyone's doing best of the decade lists ... Sheesh, now I might have to do a Horrorphile one, 'cept it will require a bit of time.
2. January 12th 2010 @ 00:56. Morgan Bell Says:
yeah Bryn you should do a best of the decade one too, all the cool kids are doing it, im bugging Jason to do one too, its fun raking through all your dvds and checking the dates, i promise

John Doe, we agree on Wonderboys, Mysterious Skin, and Sin City

Donnie Darko is an interesting no.1, its got some great qualities, but essentially i dont really like time travel movies much, the whole schizophrenia aspect is interesting though
3. January 12th 2010 @ 01:04. Bryn Says:
Morgan, what about The Terminator? The Time Machine? Or more recently Timecrimes? When they're well-written time travel movies can be really thought provoking.
4. January 12th 2010 @ 01:42. Morgan Bell Says:
i think Terminator is the only exception to the rule in my mind, the paradox is not the focus in that case, its more of an incidental explanatory point, and then it moves on to current action

movies that leave enough space for you to sit there and dwell on the paradox usually arent enjoyable to me . . . unless they contain a Flux Capacitor
5. January 12th 2010 @ 03:03. Bryn Says:
Oooo, a Flux Capacitor! I haven't heard of that one. I agree The Terminator time travel paradox is not central, but it's still a fun plot point. Have you seen Primer? Timecrimes? The paradox is central and I think very nicely handled in both cases.
6. January 12th 2010 @ 03:31. Morgan Bell Says:
i dont think ive seen either of them, im open to all new film experiences, maybe one of these days i will find the right time travel movie for me

movie quote time . . .

Dr. Emmett Brown: [reads the "Save the Clock Tower" flyer and reacts with hope] This is it! This is the answer. It says here... that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04pm, next Saturday night! If... If we could somehow... *harness* this lightning... *channel* it... into the flux capacitor... it just might work. Next Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!
7. January 12th 2010 @ 05:46. Bryn Says:
Aha! The truth is exposed! You're a Back to the Future fan! First one was entertaining, second one was average, third one, hmmm, not sure I even saw it.
8. January 12th 2010 @ 08:16. Matt Shea Says:
JD - nice 20! Donnie's a very worthy number 1 - would probably be in my top 5. Good calls on Wall-E, Amores Perros, Old Boy, Memento and The Man Who Wasn't There. Once again reminds me that there is always so much more to see.
9. January 15th 2010 @ 23:57. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Bryn,

Sorry I haven't commented on your own best of the decade but i will shortly.

As for the adventures of Donnie Darko...

The quality that Donnie possesses over all the others is that emotional engagement to match the intellectual intrigue. The tangeable storyline really let's you find what ever sort of film your looking for in it's framework. All character narratives arc to a conclusion or purpose.

Depending on which thread you take it morphs into a study of life, death and grief. Human psychology and yes the concept of time itself. Or you can be emotionally engaged with individual characters and there place within the films lexicon.

I guess what I'm saying is look for a high school comedy and you will find it. A romantic drama, science fiction fable, a mind screw horror all the different ways to view Donnie Darko.

Wow that was a little outburst, i have purposefully not reviewed the film here because I can't be remotely objective nor form coherenet sentences to describe why Richard Kelly's debut feature enthrals me so much. A Hypnotic melding of sound and vision is probably a good place to start.

See, can't help myself when it comes to this film....the secret is out.
10. January 16th 2010 @ 00:04. Bryn Says:
Yes, the secret is indeed out ... the question lies; do you prefer the original cut or the director's cut?
11. January 16th 2010 @ 00:15. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Morgan,

Sorry I haven't found time to visit your own 40 of the decade yet, but i will.

Glad we agree on a few here, every one searches for different things in film.

It amazes me Wonderboys isn't lauded more, it has such a perfect script in my eyes. The entire cast bring the dialogue to life and the direction has passion. Robert Downney jnr goes beyond his own high benchmarks here with impish glee he corrupts and liberates. Michael Douglas plays his age and is happy to linger in his characters faults. Frances McDormand, superb...even Tobey Maguire and Katey Holmes bring something.

Sin City is a comic book transposed to screen with unseen loyalty.

Mysterious Skin challenged with care and amazing empathy...a powerful topic that is imploding with insight instead of exploding in obvious melodrama and exploitation.

As for Donnie, see the above comment to Bryn for more information.

Thanks for reading Morgan.

Hi Bryn,

Original cut all the way for me. Though the idea of his pills being placebo capsules of water was cool they give to much away about the plot in the Director's Cut. That restricts enjoying the film as a participant. The soundtrack changes also irked.
13. January 16th 2010 @ 00:22. JohnDoe Says:
20/20 Filmsight

Always much more to see, but its also fun to rewatch favourites too.

14. January 16th 2010 @ 00:36. Bryn Says:
The soundtrack changes were apparently what he always intended, but was forced to change due to licencing problems. I actually quite like the pages of the book being displayed in the director's cut, but yeah, it's a bit layman's I guess ...
15. January 16th 2010 @ 01:02. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Bryn,

Give me Echo and the Bunnymen over INXS anyday! The soundtrack choices severely changed the mood and tone of the scenes they went over...instead of illicit a similar feel.
16. January 16th 2010 @ 02:19. Bryn Says:
I do agree with you totally on The Killing Moon vs Never Tear Us Apart ... but the INXS was Kelly's first choice, so what does that say about his taste in music??
17. January 16th 2010 @ 03:19. JohnDoe Says:
i will chalk it up as divine intervention that he didn't get his wish for music during production.
18. January 16th 2010 @ 11:40. Luke Says:
This list is 100% solid gold.
19. January 18th 2010 @ 10:35. Jason King Says:
Bloody sensational top 20 JD - I didn't even know it was up yet - Morgan just posted links to all our lists on hers.

Yay Donnie Darko!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bloody LOVE that movie!!

And Mysterious Skin just missed my list!
20. January 21st 2010 @ 21:41. JohnDoe Says:
So you liked all the films in my Top 20 Luke? Nice when our tastes merge.
21. January 21st 2010 @ 21:47. JohnDoe Says:
Hi Jason,

Morgan is a legend for doing the links, I really need to repay the favor and put links up for yours and hers too....but i am a lazy man so it is nothing personal if I fail.

Knew i would not be alone in my love of Mr Darko...
