True Grit – John Doe's Trailer of the Moment
The Duke won an Oscar in 1970 for his portrayal of the cantankerous, eye patch wearin’ Marshall Rooster Cogburn. The film was True Grit (1969) and though not John Wayne’s best role, (EG: The Searchers, the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Quiet Man, The Shootist) it still became an iconic character easily identified even today.
Gallop forward 40 years and the visionary Coen Brothers have remade the film. Today the first full trailer arrived and this time around Jeff Bridges (Cutter's Way) is the one donning the pirate eye wear. Kim Darby played Mattie Ross, the young girl who seeks out Cogburn to avenge her father’s murder. Now the role will be filled by Hailee Steinfeld. Replacing Robert Duvall as Ned Pepper is Barry Pepper (The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada). Sliding on the cowboy boots of Dennis Hopper will be Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) in the part of Moon. Soft country musician Glen Campbell was less than impressive in the original and Matt Damon (The Talented Mr Ripley) as La Beouf could work. Hitting the high point in his career over recent years, Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) is Tom Chaney.
Not one for remakes JD still holds out hope for this based purely on the names of the cast and crew. The trailer does offer some stunning glimpses of wide plains cinematography and there is certainly an omnipresent mood to the footage. Bridges looks comfortable and that unique Coen touch could well elevate this to a revival of the genre. (How many times has that been said?)
John Doe never was a huge fan of the original film. Actually he preferred the sequel, Rooster Cogburn. That was mainly due to the chemistry of Wayne opposite Katherine Hepburn which gave Rooster Cogburn the feel of the African Queen corralled onto the prairies of the Wild West. True Grit always felt a lot tamer than the Dukes best films, but the sight of him with the reigns clenched between his teeth, both hands full of lead as he attacks the villains head on deserves its place in cinema history.
The new trailer for True Grit.
Trailer for the original True Grit starring John Wayne.

I'm not so sure about this one.
Why couldn't they just write an original Western?
And why change the patch to the other eye? Or is your John Wayne pic possibly a reversal?
Questions, questions ...
Nice cinematography ... Deakins again?

In today's more graphic movies, I wonder if we'll get to see the actual horse ride to save Mattie and I wonder if the fact that her arm had to be amputated will come to light. (I read the book!)
At any rate. FILL YOUR HANDS!

I'm not overly excited for this one either, but the trailer showed enough promise to share.
It does seem strange that such an average western was the Coen Brothers choice to remake.I agree they would probably have an interesting original story to tell in the wild west if they wanted.
We can only hope it goes better than their rework of The Ladykillers.
As for the patch, maybe Bridges needed to separate himself from the iconic Wayne part. As they say costume is a large part of finding character.
And yes it is Roger D on camera.

i think the girl shows great potential, and you know how much I hate kid actors generally. Seems the best are on TV these days. (Californication, Weeds, Hung etc)
My expectations are low because the original was not all that impressive...with that said these are the type of films that deserve remakes more than bonofide gems.

Wow, I thought I was gunna cop buck shot shrapnel from Duke fans for ranking True Grit as only average.
Chemistry had loads to do with the Dukes best films IMO. His interaction with Deborah Kerr in The Quiet Man is another exceptional example. Loved him with Bacall in the Shootist too.
I liked Darby but agree the new girl seems to bring something too. For me though it was Glen Campbell that dragged the original down even further.
I read the book as a kid too James but found it a little forgettable alongside the Elmore Leonard stuff I was into. The amputation did stand out though and I think it will be addressed in this knowing the Coens style of confronting genre moments.
A pleasure as always to see you James.

I am sold - have never seen the original but I do love a good Western and I think I may have gotten a woody at the cast and crew. Jeff Bridges RULES - it would be great to see a double oscar for him and for two people to win an oscar for playing the same character.
Thanks for sharing this one JD.

As you can tell I am not chewing at the bit for this one. Like Bryn I would have preferred an original western, but hey we take the beans we are given. If the names Coen, Brolin and Bridges weren't attached I would probably have treated the idea with utter disdain.
That aside the trailer does show potential and I understand your excitement...that's why I shared

It does have potential for sure. Hailee Steinfeld could go either way for me.
The novel wasn't particularly great when I read it as a kid but does contain a bit more oomph than the tale they tell in the original film.
Fingers crossed that we do get a quality western out of it.
Always great to see you drop by.
