Film & TV on DVD - John Doe Film News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Films you’ve seen vs Films you haven’t?

Films you’ve seen vs Films you haven’t?

The Magnificent 7
THE MAGNIFICENT 7- A personal favourite I watch on a regular basis

Versus

A Scanner Darkly
A SCANNER DARKLY- A film I anticipate being an instant favourite-Coming Soon

Hypothetical time:

If you had to make a decision between only watching movies you’ve seen before, versus only watching new films, which would you choose?

You are welcome to adapt the question to your own addictions. Is it books, videogames, or music etc, essentially the art that floats your boat.

I know that each provides a different sensory experience, some books for example are better left read once, some songs can become the anthems of your life, and films can transport you back to being 10 years old.

If you choose to only read, see and hear things that are new then you would sacrifice those familiar favourites that can often offer comfort in times of tragedy or depression and lift you in times of celebration and revelry.

(Tacky as it may sound the thought of never watching a Connery Bond or Bullitt again is frightening to my reality.)

Alas the double edged sword is, choose to only watch previously screened films means to creatively stagnate and a loss of inspiration. Missing each new revolution or chapter in a career and remaining oblivious to current pop culture and underground delights.

Consumed by the past, a bubble of safety forms, free from the massive disappointment of buying into hype or seeing a once great creative force reduced to recycling his/her own work endlessly.

The reason I ask the question is that I don’t have a definitive answer, but thinking about it entertained me for a couple of minutes so I thought Id share.

So gang, do you have an answer to the riddle??

Familiarity breeds contempt.
The greatest fear is that of the unknown.
Hmmmm.
Guess I'd like to remain open to new sensations.
However not being able to scratch an old itch would be painful ....
I'm thrown. Stumped. Let me get back to you on that one.

I can't choose either. I love revisiting old films to recreate the feeling I had when I saw or just to relive old times but to never see a new film again would be very sad indeed. That said though my current situation as mum to a baby means I don't get to see much new at the moment!

Agreed Byrn, new sensations are what living is all about. But being a sentimental soul I must scratch taht old itch regularly.

Im an opinionated Mofo who usually knows what he wants and says it, just like you this one has me stumped.

Hi Johanna, nice to see you again. It is a tuff little quandry.

Interesting point you raise, choosing new movies would mean you cant show your new offspring the films that enlightened your own young life.

I know if I had a kid, the pleasure derived from screening things like The Neverending Story, Wizard of Oz, The Jungle Book etc would possibly be richer moments than the initial release.

So many sacrifices on either side.

Hi John

What a good question...I'm not sure I can make a choice....I'm going to ponder and then write again in a bit...

Hi Tracy,
I look forward to your always thoughtful response....really is a riddle after all
7. October 23rd 2006 @ 10:06. Luke Says:
I'd probably choose films I haven't seen... I don't get to watch films as much these days so I think I'd have to settle for just new turf.
8. October 24th 2006 @ 01:43. Cibbuano Says:
I'd have to give up the old films... yeah, I love rewatching movies, but the discovery of something new is much more thrilling...

After all, there are a finite number of movies that have been made, but an infinite number that haven't.

9. October 24th 2006 @ 01:46. Tracy Says:
I think when it comes to films, I would choose seeing new films, especially films that portray a new world to me.

When it comes to music, I would stick my faves as they mean so much to me. Music is such a vivid reminder of portions of my life and I can't imagine being without the songs I love so much.

What a great question, John....
10. October 24th 2006 @ 11:27. DuskDevi Says:
Oh wow...what a question...

As Voltaire said; "Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers"

No. I can't answer this. Too much of a sacrifice either way. Oh damn you John...couldn't you have asked something simpler?
Like, "Can you explain mass energy equivalence without once using the letters E, M and C?" !!!!!!
11. October 24th 2006 @ 13:25. Adrian Says:
Auguste Comte was once accused of "intellectual hygiene" -- he only read a small selection of books, over and over. And Susan Sontag, though she watched a movie every night, was working a list of about 400.

Me personally, I'd prefer to just read new things. It isn't much of a choice -- I don't re-watch or re-read when I can help it.

Matt Groening has this advice: "Life is to short for repeats, unless they're Simpsons episodes."
12. October 24th 2006 @ 22:52. JohnDoe Says:
Wow, thanks for the mighty response to my little quandry. Best of allI really appreciate everyone's sincere and intelligent answers.

Luke, Cib and Adrian,
Im still on the fence but I must agree that I would probably lean towards expanding my repotoire as opposed to capping it.

Tracy,
I agree with your statement about music, it would be a different sacrifice to not rewatching films.

DuskiDevil
Great quote and thanks for making me laugh.....

dammit, I hate this question because i am such a sucker for sticking with what i love. I have a fear of seeing a huge piece of turd and then it haunting my dreams. But there are certain people who are good at showing me the way, and if i have someone to show me the way and i trust them then I am oh so grateful to discover what ive been missing.

As for your question: no comment, you know my weakness
16. November 15th 2006 @ 04:10. JohnDoe Says:
Hi anonymous,

You sound just like me when I try and make a top ten list or a greatest movies ever compilation, conflicted.

It is funny how we become attached to what we know and let us define us sometimes at the expense of new experiences that may be far more profound.

Im still on the fence myself..

JohnDoe,
Your blog page is looking suspiciously like mine!

Can't wait for A Scanner Darkly ...
18. November 15th 2006 @ 10:54. JohnDoe Says:
I must correct you, my blog page always looked like this, "Your blog page looks suspiciously like mine"- when I saw it the other day i thought it was nod to my fine colour scheme.

And yes indeed A Scanner Darkly looks excellent and Pan's Labyrinth is equally attractive.
