Films you’ve seen vs Films you haven’t?
Films you’ve seen vs Films you haven’t?
Versus
Hypothetical time:
If you had to make a decision between only watching movies you’ve seen before, versus only watching new films, which would you choose?
You are welcome to adapt the question to your own addictions. Is it books, videogames, or music etc, essentially the art that floats your boat.
I know that each provides a different sensory experience, some books for example are better left read once, some songs can become the anthems of your life, and films can transport you back to being 10 years old.
If you choose to only read, see and hear things that are new then you would sacrifice those familiar favourites that can often offer comfort in times of tragedy or depression and lift you in times of celebration and revelry.
Alas the double edged sword is, choose to only watch previously screened films means to creatively stagnate and a loss of inspiration. Missing each new revolution or chapter in a career and remaining oblivious to current pop culture and underground delights.
Consumed by the past, a bubble of safety forms, free from the massive disappointment of buying into hype or seeing a once great creative force reduced to recycling his/her own work endlessly.
The reason I ask the question is that I don’t have a definitive answer, but thinking about it entertained me for a couple of minutes so I thought Id share.
So gang, do you have an answer to the riddle??

The greatest fear is that of the unknown.
Hmmmm.
Guess I'd like to remain open to new sensations.
However not being able to scratch an old itch would be painful ....
I'm thrown. Stumped. Let me get back to you on that one.

Im an opinionated Mofo who usually knows what he wants and says it, just like you this one has me stumped.

Interesting point you raise, choosing new movies would mean you cant show your new offspring the films that enlightened your own young life.
I know if I had a kid, the pleasure derived from screening things like The Neverending Story, Wizard of Oz, The Jungle Book etc would possibly be richer moments than the initial release.
So many sacrifices on either side.
Movies and Life
What a good question...I'm not sure I can make a choice....I'm going to ponder and then write again in a bit...

After all, there are a finite number of movies that have been made, but an infinite number that haven't.
Movies and Life
When it comes to music, I would stick my faves as they mean so much to me. Music is such a vivid reminder of portions of my life and I can't imagine being without the songs I love so much.
What a great question, John....

As Voltaire said; "Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers"
No. I can't answer this. Too much of a sacrifice either way. Oh damn you John...couldn't you have asked something simpler?
Like, "Can you explain mass energy equivalence without once using the letters E, M and C?" !!!!!!

Me personally, I'd prefer to just read new things. It isn't much of a choice -- I don't re-watch or re-read when I can help it.
Matt Groening has this advice: "Life is to short for repeats, unless they're Simpsons episodes."

Luke, Cib and Adrian,
Im still on the fence but I must agree that I would probably lean towards expanding my repotoire as opposed to capping it.
Tracy,
I agree with your statement about music, it would be a different sacrifice to not rewatching films.

Great quote and thanks for making me laugh.....

As for your question: no comment, you know my weakness
Film & TV on DVD
You sound just like me when I try and make a top ten list or a greatest movies ever compilation, conflicted.
It is funny how we become attached to what we know and let us define us sometimes at the expense of new experiences that may be far more profound.
Im still on the fence myself..

Can't wait for A Scanner Darkly ...

And yes indeed A Scanner Darkly looks excellent and Pan's Labyrinth is equally attractive.
