Film & TV on DVD - John Doe Film News & Reviews

Greetings Film Fiends and welcome to John Doe's Film Blog. 30 years of dedicated celluloid obsession has meant that I have seen a few films. Drawing attention to some of the lesser discussed gems that I love. Cult classics, obscure curios and quality genre pictures. This blogs purpose is to translate some of my passion for these films and with luck, inspire you the reader to go check em out.

Vintage Ghostbusters change Film History

Meet the original 1950’s GHOSTBUSTERS – Bob Hope, Dean Martin and Fred McMurray.

You know the sign, you know the gang - or do you?

Fan made trailers are a risky proposition. Most of them tend to be silly, choppy things that really don’t do much other than reassemble a few key moments with a semi appropriate soundtrack. This particular effort though is far more than the usual ectoplasmic slime.

Ghostbusters was a pivotal particle accelerating slice of 80’s comedy that transcended mere film. Quoted incessantly around the house of Doe for years to come, “So, she’s a dog.”, “Nimble little minx isn’t she?” and “When someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!” were said far to regularly.

Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis - The Imposters?

Solidifying Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis’ position as A-List comedians of their genreation, but what if the film had been made in the 1950’s instead of the 1980’s?

Dino, Bob and Lewis - The Boys ya Wanna Call

That’s the conceit this mock trailer takes and it’s more delectable than the devouring a 100 foot “Stay Puff Marshmallow Man” for breakfast. In this alternate reality of a premake the roll of Dr Peter Venkman is filled by Bob Hope. Dr Raymond Stanz is repossessed by the martini lovin, rat packin’ Dean Martin. That nutty professor Dr Egon Spengler is played by, well, the absent minded professor Fred McMurray and the real nutty professor Jerry Lewis as usual finds a way to get on camera too.

Reconstructed with loving care and an exhaustive memory for moments of celluloid past, watch the trailer below. Just remember “Who ya gunna call”, the matinee idols of yesteryear.

Awww, that was great! When done well, these things just amaze me. You'd have to have so much patience to piece them all together. This is one of the best that I've seen! I especially liked the little theme song at the end..."We're Ghostbusters...we're clever, courageous, and strong!"

Of course, I'm one of those nerds who still quotes Ghostbusters. Sometimes when I stand behind someone opening the fridge I'll say "Zuul". I'm also partial to saying, "Let's show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown.."

I'm not afraid of a little dated humor!

WOW,

Thanks for the link Natalina

It would be foolish of me to decline the request!

Totally singin' along to the theme song too...so appropriate for the era.

Its the authenticity and golden age vibe that emanates from the trailer that I really enjoyed.....well that and I'm a massive Dean Martin and Fred MacMurray fan.

I used to do the "Zuul" thing too...your not alone gatekeeper

Hi Morgan,

Maybe in that certain light, at that certain time with just a certain amount of alcohol could one see Orson in Bob. But then can't people find the Virgin mary in a cookie

Bloody brilliant! I love it and I'm sure the 80s Ghostbuster guys would think it's a hoot too.

Did you make this???

Morgan, Orson Welles? I think maybe a Passion Pop hallucination. Let me confirm after a few more drinks and see if it works with white wine.

Nat and JD, I do the Zuul thing too, methinks we are supreme dags

I love anything to do with Ghostbusters and this is no exception. Brilliantly done. Thanks for brining my attention to it.

'Bringing' my attention even! 'Brining' sounds like some awful torture inflicted by a seafood specialist.

That'll teach me not to preview!

Hi Cheryl J,

I wish I had made it. It was created by a youtube user named "Whoiseyevan", talented clipper to be sure.

Nice to see you still around and glad you liked the video find..

Happy to have shared something you enjoyed Marc P.

"Brining" is painful and smelly but still not as terrifying as "Octopiiing"

Actually Morgan, when you put them together they do look alike. Spooky! I never noticed it before...right down to the jaw.

Crikey, Octopiiing sounds like rough going. I think I'll stick to dry land.

Also; I don't think Orson looks like Bob. But that may be the brining. Oh dear, that sounds like a marine version of 'The Shining'.

Stop me now before it's too late.

I still don't see the resemblance. Maybe in the jawline. But oh my goodness, Orson has some long fingers!

Good one Morgan,
Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can see what accustomed ones don't. There is a slight similarity, the jaw line is similar for sure. Guess because their films are so distinctly different and what they do with those similar features is so far removed from one another I have never drawn teh comparison...

Awesome seeing something from an alternate perspective, thanks.
