Director Werner Herzog interviewed by Henry Rollins
Director Werner Herzog interviewed by Henry Rollins
Singer, actor, philosopher, writer and rowdy cult legend Henry Rollins (Heat, Lost Highway) has got his own talk show that is premiering on Foxtel soon. Only interviewing artists he respects, you get to see the likes of Directors Gus Van Sant, Werner Herzog and Oliver Stone plus a host of musicians including Marilyn Manson.
Below you can watch an interview from the show with the respected and feared filmmaker Werner Herzog
Director, Writer and Producer, Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde Aguirre: Wrath of God, Grizzly Man, Woyzeck) is an individualist, focused and single minded in making his own movies the way he sees them. There is spectacle and introspection to every one of his beautifully shot films.
".. So, you have to be daring to do things like this, because the world is not easily accepting of filmmaking. There will always be some sort of an obstacle, and the worst of all obstacles is the spirit of bureaucracy. You have to find your way to battle bureaucracy. You have to outsmart it, to outgut it, to outnumber it, to outfilm them -- that's what you have to do." - Werner Herzog
Striving for an absolute realism some of his best works are his collaborations with the uber intense actor Klaus Kinski. (Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo etc) There is an unhinged mania behind Klaus’s eyes that is both passionate and horrifying. Herzog suspends it and manipulates it making for powerfully authentic viewing.
"People think we had a love-hate relationship. Well, I did not love him, nor did I hate him. We had mutual respect for each other, even as we both planned each other's murder." - Werner Herzog on the difficultly of working with Klaus Kinski
Always shooting on location, often challenging the definition of what is staged and what is rehearsed. Examining our inner mechanisms to observe eccentric, blindly driven characters that struggle against the landscape of mother natures majestic and treacherous grandeur.
"Perhaps I seek certain utopian things, space for human honour and respect, landscapes not yet offended, planets that do not exist yet, dreamed landscapes. Very few people seek these images today." - Werner Herzog
Herzog’s latest effort is called Rescue Dawn and it stars Christian Bale, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davis. Screening at this years Sydney Film Festival 2007 (June 8-24).
Inspired by a true story, the loose plot is a US fighter Pilot (Bale) crash lands in Laos during a highly classified campaign. He is captured tortured and put in a POW camp where he realises that the only choices are escape or die.
In Herzog’s hands you can expect this story to become something completely different, with added instinctual devices that expose human nature and the world around us.
"Civilization is like a thin layer of ice upon a deep ocean of chaos and darkness." - Werner Herzog

Horrorphile
Christian Bale is my second fave actor after Sean Penn.

I too enjoy his movies, Grizzly Man might have been slow at places, but I thought about it several days after.
It's amusing how I too posted about Rescue Dawn today. I look forward to it.
Have a good one,

Bale is a great talent, loved him as a little boy in Empire of The Sun.
Red Dawn, oops Rescue Dawn looks good on its own merit too.

Rescue Dawn shows promise, looking forward to catching it at the Sydney Film Festival.
