Wicked City (1987) - Footage Included

Wicked City

Wicked City
DVD Cover
Director:Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Writer:Kisei Choo

Voices:Gregory Snegoff, Mike Reynolds, Alexandra Kenworthy
Genre: Anime

"Its body is armored in iron and concrete. Its mind is wrapped in computers and high technology. This is the city and the time we are living in. But most people are ignoring the unexplainable or mysterious. Those things that we can't figure out through ordinary logic. Around these ordinary people, following common rules... all the while seeking out strong desires and pleasures... and hanging on to a little happiness... there exists a vast and fearful world of darkness beyond our time and space. I'm afraid I know about that".- Taki

Anime Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s (Ninja Scroll) ferocious imagination is let loose in this classic Animated Sci-Fi/Horror. Challenging western convention with every sexually perverse, blood soaked cell the Japanese Manga comics and their colourful feature length adaptations are extreme adult entertainment.
"What's the big deal? She's just a woman of the demon world. Who knows what kind of real form she has under that beauty. You already must know what happens to the people who sleep with them. They all became zombies after their life energies were sucked out. Do you know why so many people still want to have sex with them? Because of how it feels. People feel such incredible ecstasy, it can't even compare with human sex".- Guiseppe

Eye bleeding images that may be repulsive to some viewers attract those with a raging appetite for original storytelling that vomits taboo concepts and challenges the mind and moral compass with radical alternate cultural sensibilities.

Wicked City is set in the not too distant future where a centuries old truce between the human world and the demon world is shattering, the threat of an inter-dimensional war is imminent.

On the mortal side is a black guard named Taki who is ordered to team up with Makie, a female from the netherworld. Taki is a James Bond type, arrogant, self assured, seducing woman and a skilled assassin. His partner Makie is just as lethal, but introverted and reserved.

Together the pair are assigned to protect a high ranking ambassador crucial to maintaining peace.

Facing obscene dangers they combat evil in all forms, be it fanged vaginas, morphing gargoyles or horrifying tortures. Controversial, brace yourself for action scenes that shock with explicit sex and violence.

Wicked City
Any one got a pair of nail clippers?
John Doe says
Mature fantasy that is visually arresting, the meticulous animation is of the highest order and achieves a thick atmosphere of surreal eye candy.

Mesmerizing to watch, the intricate plot puts you in a trance and engulfs you in the bowels of its supernatural tale.

A bold and daring visionary the director is willing to risk all, pushing the boundaries of good taste to deliver this powerful cartoon that will never have a Western equal.

In a constant state of flux, the screenplay moves swiftly and adds extra gravity to the splendid pictures.

There are things you will see in this that will stay with you forever, forcing you to realise that the sick and twisted can also be intelligent and stimulate the eyes, ears and mind.

As with most Manga animations the English dubbed voice work is distracting, so I do recommend watching it in native tongue with subtitles.

Back in the day, (mid-1980’s) the only place to buy Manga/Anime movies in Sydney Australia was specialist comic books stores like Comic Kingdom and Phantom Zone.
Still underground, this was a dark and moody retail experience for an under age John Doe who one day instead of picking up the latest batman comic stumbled upon this risky looking animated assault.

Rushing home and pressing play, after 10 minutes my lifetime addiction to Japanese animation began, to this day few films have surprised me as much as this. JD dare’s you to see for yourself.

Worth noting, there is also a live action version of Wicked City made in the early 90’s that somehow manages to recreate some of the more hardcore moments in the film.

Below you will find one of the ferocious action scenes in Japanese, there are no subtitles but it is a fantastic example of what the film has to offer.

AWESOME! I had to stop the trailer... Ninja Scroll is my all-time favourite anime, and I'm always on the search for something as dark and violent...

Do you have this, or is available in Australia?

2. January 30th 2007 @ 02:23. JohnDoe Says:
Yeah I have a copy you can borrow or you can buy or rent it in Australia.....Ninja Scroll is actually my favourite anime, but I figured this one was lesser seen...and often bad mouthed too.

Now if only they will release Crying Freeman over here.

A few other top anime feature films I own, just for the hell of it: (all available in Oz)
Grave of Fireflies
Akira/Ghost In the Shell (of course)
Golgo 13: the Professional and Queen Bee
Metropolis
Perfect Blue
Vampire Hunter D
SteamBoy
Cowboy BeBop

I have been a hard core anime fan for years, and let me tell you, 'Wicked City' is only the beginning....Im sure, if your a fan, you already have full writs available on 'Evangelion' and 'ghost in the shell' but what about the lesser known 'Ledgend of the demon womb'? That is some fucked up shit let me tell you. It blows 'wicked city' right out of the water as far as freaked out story lines and demonized sex scenes go!
Also, if you have not already, check out Miyazaki. Not quite so much sex but I still have yet to see anything so impressive as the scene in 'Princess Mononke' when the young brave unwittingly pulls back his bowstring with his demon arm...and decapitates his target! The look of shock on his face is priceless! Truly, the western movie world has no idea when you compare it to that....

Have you seen Hellsing?

5. January 30th 2007 @ 02:55. JohnDoe Says:
Hi kleonoptra,

Awesome to meet another anime fan....I have been a watcher for 25 years now...

I enjoyed Legend of The Demon Womb but thought the story lost its way a little but the visuals are superb....still prefer Wicked City...though legend of the Overfiend still stands tall as the sickest shit ever.

I have seen all of Miyazaki's films, Grave of Fireflies is easily the best out of the studio IMO...I enjoyed Mononoke, Porco Rosso etc (Found spirited away and Howls Moving castle felt recycled) and Castle of Cagliostro stands the test of time.

I listed my faves in the above comment and would put Golgo 13 right up near the top too...

Cib, Hellsing is kickass stuff..

Im not massive on anime series (prefer the feature films) just because of the time investment in getting the whole story...still didnt stop me from enjoying Rourin Kenshin, Noir and Evangelion etc,
7. January 30th 2007 @ 03:04. Cibbuano Says:
I'm not a fan of series either, but when that slick Japanese jazz-rock soundtrack opened up with that freaky vampire killing the other vampires, I was magnetized!

8. January 30th 2007 @ 03:15. JohnDoe Says:
yeah it a hell of a vamp battle royale...cool and stylish
9. January 30th 2007 @ 04:31. Kleonaptra Says:
Oh man. My boyfriend LOVES 'cagliostro' and I cant stand it! I agree with you on 'spirited away' sure it was enjoyable, but doesnt make the faves list.
So what if overfiend and demon womb lose the plot, its worth it for the shock value! Do you think western movies would ever be so bold?
But none compare to 'Evangelion' I get goosebumps as the Goddess gathers up all our souls....
And thanks for checking out my rant mate.

Love Wicked City.
Probably my fave, although I also really liked The Professional and, of course, Ghost in the Shell ( i have both the Jap and US versions of that).
I have heard of the live action of this, where can you get it?? Is it worth buying?
Some of the nightmare imagery in this is awesome. A snatch with fangs??!! YIKES!!!!
I saw the one at the Sydney festival last year, can't remember the title, but it didn't do anything for me .... Mind Game or something ... ??
Hey, on a related tangent, is Battle of the Planets being turned into a live action feature? I was obsessed with that TV show as a boy, my first encounters with Jap animation, although at the time I didn't know this, as it was dubbed in American voices ... it wasn't until years later I discovered it was a Japanese production. I have photos of my 12th birthday and my close buddies and I are all pulling the "transmute" gesture (closed fist passing down in front of the face). Me and my friends even created a play for school assembly based on G-Force. I was Keyop. LOL!

Dude, Battle Of The Planets (Gattchaman) was an obsession of mine as a kid, I have a few of them on DVD now....they have releasd all the originals now....Astroboy, Speed Racer and Kimba were also big in my youth..

Have not heard anything about a live action film but seeing a fiery phoneix would be something special....

For teh record I was always Jason when we played G-Force as a kid...
12. February 1st 2007 @ 04:12. Bryn Says:
Jason, of course ...
I Keyop 'cos I was good at goin' "Brrrr-toot-toot!" .... LOL
What was the name of their enemy again??
(and just quietly, but I had a small crush on Princess .... )
13. February 1st 2007 @ 05:23. JohnDoe Says:
mmmmm, Princess.......

Fighting the evil forces from the planet Spectra.....Zoltar was the head bad guy that always booked it in an escape pod.,
14. February 1st 2007 @ 05:27. Bryn Says:
That's it!! so you have some of the episodes on DVD you say? Mmmmmm!!!
15. February 1st 2007 @ 05:40. JohnDoe Says:
I only have about 8 or 10 episodes but you can buy each of the seven seasons in box set form quite cheap at JB....
16. February 1st 2007 @ 05:43. JohnDoe Says:
Oh and pointless trivia, actor Alan Young (Mr Ed, The Time Machine) was the voice of Keyop and Casey Kasem was Mark
17. February 1st 2007 @ 13:59. Bryn Says:
There were seven seasons??!!
I knew Casey Kasem was Mark ... yeah, I knew that much ... but Mr Ed was Keyop??
18. February 12th 2007 @ 02:56. Adrian Says:
